CHICAGO (CBS) – The family of a Chicago woman who died after an abortion at Planned Parenthood says it wants answers about her death.

Tonya Reaves, 24, died late Friday night from a hemorrhage, with a cervical dilation and evacuation, as well as an intrauterine pregnancy as contributing causes, according to the medical examiner’s office.

She died after she’d had an abortion at Planned Parenthood at 18 S. Michigan Av, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Her death was ruled an accident, but the Reaves family wants to know more, especially Tonya’s twin sister Toni.

“We were born the same day. She was my other half,” Toni said.

Toni Reaves said the family is trying to get through this.

“It happened so fast. She was just fine one day and then the next day she was gone. We’re just trying to figure out what happened… what happened,” she said.
Toni Reaves said her sister was engaged to be married and had one son – Alvin – who just had his first birthday.

In a written statement, Planned Parenthood of Illinois CEO Carole Brite said “We were shocked and saddened upon learning of a tragic development at a nearby hospital. Our hearts go out to the loved ones of this patient.

“While legal abortion services in the United States have a very high safety record, a tragedy such as this is devastating to loved ones and we offer our deepest sympathies. Planned Parenthood of Illinois cares deeply about the health and safety of each and every patient. We do not publicly discuss private patient matters and we follow HIPAA laws that forbid the disclosure of patient information.”

According to The DailY mail: Ms Reaves left behind her one-year-old son Alvin as well as her fiance.

‘We’re just trying to figure out what happened… what happened,’ Toni Reaves said.

Ms Reaves underwent a cervical dilation and evacuation procedure at the Planned Parenthood at 18 South Michigan Avenue, according to the Medical Examiner’s office.

A dilation and evacuation procedure usually takes place during the second trimester of a pregnancy and involves the removal of tissue from the uterus using various devices.

It is unclear if she passed at the Planned Parenthood during the procedure, or afterwards at a local hospital.

‘Abortion deaths like this are completely avoidable,’ said Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue.

‘When a woman bleeds to death after an abortion, it is usually an indication of error on the part of the abortionist coupled with a delay in calling for emergency assistance,’

While the name of the abortionist responsible for this patient death is currently unknown, Planned Parenthood’s most recent 990 Tax Forms list abortionist Caroline M. Hoke as its Medical Director.

The abortion death took place in Obama’s adopted hometown of Chicago at a time when his administration is working hard to provide funding to Planned Parenthood through the federalized health care system.

“In light of this tragedy, which is yet another in a long list of Planned Parenthood abuses, we call on President Obama to immediately withdraw all Federal funding and personal support from Planned Parenthood,” said Newman. “Friday’s death is yet another reason why men and women of conscience across this nation cannot and will not comply with the forced funding of abortion and its intentional violation of religious liberties.”

July 8, 2012 (CHICAGO) — A published report says Illinois Medicaid’s inspector general is investigating the billing practices of Planned Parenthood of Illinois’ medical director.
Crain’s Chicago Business reports that more than $3 million in Medicaid funds went to Dr CAROLINE MARKEY HOKE MD in fiscal year 2009. The business journal says that made Hoke the Illinois program’s second-highest-paid doctor. Payments to Hoke dropped to nothing by 2011.

A spokesman for the state’s Medicaid agency says payments are being suspended to Hoke until billing issues are resolved.

Planned Parenthood of Illinois CEO Carole Brite denies wrongdoing and says the organization will have to repay the state an unspecified amount. Brite says the review began in 2010.

According to a Crains report: The Illinois Medicaid inspector general is investigating the billing practices of the medical director of Planned Parenthood of Illinois.

Dr. Caroline Hoke was reimbursed more than $3 million by Medicaid during the state’s 2009 fiscal year, making her the program’s second-highest-paid doctor at the time, but the payments fell to zero by 2011, Crain’s analysis of state records shows.

Crain’s analyzed Medicaid records of more than 30,000 physicians for the 2009-11 state fiscal years, which end on June 30.

Dr. Hoke’s reimbursements plunged by more than 70 percent, to $825,083, in 2010, from nearly $3.1 million in 2009. She received no payments in 2011. Her 2009 reimbursement included payments for services she provided as well as those billed by her but provided by others. It is common for a billing provider like Dr. Hoke to submit claims for providers she supervises.

Much of the money likely flowed to the organization. Her annual compensation of about $300,000 hasn’t changed since 2008, the year after she became medical director, tax records show.

According to the report, the average hours they all worked was only 35 hours per week for their FAT CAT RICH SIX DIGIT PLANNED PARENTHOOD SALARIES !

Health care providers are failing to detail abortion complications to the state as required by law, one of many gaps in a surveillance system viewed as crucial to protecting patients, a Tribune review has found.

The state’s system for tracking abortions is so broken that regulators also may be missing more than 7,000 of the procedures per year.

The Illinois Department of Public Health must collect details about every abortion performed in the state, including whether the patient is injured or dies.The mandatory reporting is essential for tracking trends in public health and can provide a window into quality of care. While abortion has proven to be a very safe procedure, heightened rates of complications or clusters of deaths could signal problems with particular providers.

“If people are looking at reports and seeing excessive complications, that might warrant another look or another inspection,” said Vicki Saporta, president of the National Abortion Federation, an association of providers.

But there are significant holes in state monitoring of a procedure that affects tens of thousands of Illinois women each year. Nationally, current rates suggest that nearly 1 in 3 women will have an abortion, according to research published in the medical journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.

The Tribune found:
•State regulators have documented between 7,000 and 17,000 fewer abortions a year than a national research group found in Illinois.
•This reporting is the only tool Illinois authorities have to monitor some abortion providers, yet regulators may be allowing doctors and clinics to operate off the books. Regulators collect reports from 26 providers, but the abortion rights research group has identified 37 providers doing business in the state.
•Also unknown to officials are the types of abortion-related problems experienced by women. Nearly 4,000 reports of abortion complications involving Illinois residents in 2009 were missing the required description.
•Health care providers who intentionally fail to submit accurate and complete reports are committing a criminal act, and a failure to report abortion complications is grounds for revoking their licenses, but the Department of Public Health has never sought disciplinary action against a provider.

Kelly Jakubek, an agency spokeswoman, said in a written response that it was the responsibility of abortion doctors to ensure they comply with the mandatory reporting requirement.
Regulators don’t respond to the reports in any way, she said, because they view the information as serving statistical purposes only.

“It’s outrageous,” declared Maurice Stevenson, whose wife died in 2002 from infection following an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Chicago. “These procedures, complications and deaths should be public record.”

Planned Parenthood founder, Margaret Sanger, was a member in good standing with the racist American Eugenics Society. Sanger had board members who were known for their racist writing and Sanger published many of those in her publications. Sanger called for parents to have a QUOTE: LICENSE TO BREED controlled by people who believed in her eugenic philosophy. She wanted all would be parents to go before her eugenic boards to request a “PERMIT TO BREED“.

Planned Parenthood’s top award is called the Margaret Sanger Award, despite the fact that Sanger was an admitted Klan speaker.
