Man threatens to shoot Rockford pro-lifers outside abortion facility
by Thaddeus Baklinski

ROCKFORD, Illinois, December 6, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A man accompanying a woman into the notorious Rockford abortion mill on December 3 threatened to shoot pro-life sidewalk counselors, according to witnesses.

Rockford pro-life veteran Kevin Rilott told LifeSiteNews that the incident happened on Friday, when a group of five abortion supporters from the Chicago area showed up at the Northern Illinois Women’s Center. They stood at the driveway to the abortion facility shouting at mothers not to talk with pro-life sidewalk counselors.

Pro-lifers had parked a free mobile ultrasound motor home near the facility. Rilott said it appeared that the abortion supporters had come to Rockford with the sole purpose of trying to block mothers from using the free ultrasounds. In an attempt to confuse and turn away mothers, the abortion mill security guard had even placed a sign near the ultrasound motor home that said, “Free Abortions In Motor-home.”

At one point during the morning the pro-life counselors were confronted by a man who was bringing a young lady into the clinic for an abortion. Rilott said that the man appeared to be “emboldened” by the shouting of the pro-abortion protesters.

According to multiple witnesses, the man reached into his pocket and pretended that he had a gun. He then pulled his hand out of his pocket in the shape of a handgun and looked directly at the pro-lifers and said, “What would you do if I pulled out my .45 and put a bullet in your head?”

The pro-lifers called the police and filed a police report. A representative from the police department told LifeSiteNews that it would take up to five days to obtain a copy of the report, but that no arrest was made at the time.

Donna Modica, among many of the pro-lifers who witnessed the incident, said, “It’s clear these abortion supporters think that because they can kill a baby in the womb, they can do whatever they want to anyone. The violence of abortion breeds more violence.”

A witness at the Rockford abortuary said that later on the morning of December 3, the owner of the facility, Wayne Webster, came out and taunted one of the pro-lifers saying, “Maybe he should have shot you.”

Joe and Anne Scheidler founded the Chicago anti-abortion organization- Pro-Life Action League. they have been involved in pro-life work for many years, and have recently been staging pickets in front of one of Planned Parenthood’s mega centers in Aurora . Ill. Joe Scheidler was called the Green Beret of the pro-life movement by syndicated columnist Patrick Buchanan. His book on his methods of fighting abortion, CLOSED: 99 Ways to Stop Abortion, was updated in 1993, and he has produced the videos Meet the Abortion Providers and Abortion: The Inside Story, featuring former abortionists who are now telling the truth about what goes on in the abortion clinics.

According Eric Scheidler, Joe’s son, “Bricks were thrown through the front windows of my parents’ house in Chicago last night at 2 a.m., with a pro-abort note attached to one.
Is pro-choice violence on the rise?”
just coincidence?” He went on to state, “Last night the Illinois Choice Action Team (state NARAL chapter) held a “clinic escort” training on Chicago’s north side. A few hours late, bricks are thrown through my parents’ windows a few miles away….Let me clarify that I’m not accusing the Illinois Choice Action Team of anything. I can’t imagine their leader, Benita, of doing anything like this or being anything but horrified by it. But I wouldn’t be surprised if someone who attended the meeting got all fired up and decided to raise some hell.”

Here’s the note that came through the window with a chunk of asphalt. It reads (unedited):

According to Eric, “The “no laws could ever stop me” seems redundant, what with the anti-vandalism laws having been ignored. BTW, seeds from Queen Anne’s lace are supposed to be contraceptive (possibly even abortifacient).”

Joe is unavailable as he said he is dealing with police and reporting the incident !

Operation Rescue issued this statement:

Operation Rescue was outraged to learn this morning that the home of long-time pro-life leader Joseph Scheidler was attacked in the middle of the night with bricks of asphalt being thrown through two front windows. One of the bricks contained a threatening note from an obvious abortion supporter bearing a message of hate. The attack occurred around 2:00 A.M.

We denounce in the strongest terms the cowardly violence that shattered the peace of the Scheidler home last night,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “We demand that that Attorney General Eric Holder order the Justice Department to launch an immediate investigation into this violent hate crime and to provide the same protections to Joseph and Ann Scheidler as they have in the past for unthreatened abortionists.”

There has been a recent increase in violence against peaceful pro-lifers. In September, 2009, activist Jim Pouillon was brutally murdered as he stood with a pro-life sign in front of a high school in Owosso, Michigan. Operation Rescue’s headquarters in Wichita, Kansas, has been repeatedly vandalized, and staff threatened in recent months. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, sidewalk counselors were threatened by a man at gunpoint and police later discovered a cache of weapons in the man’s vehicle.

Joe and Ann Scheidler are pioneers in the pro-life movement whose knowledge and experience has benefitted everyone who has ever taken a stand for the lives of the pre-born,” said Newman. “Please join Operation Rescue in sending a special Christmas gift to the Scheidler’s today as a show of support and to help defray the cost of repairing the damage to their home.”

Cards and letters can be sent to:

Eric Scheidler has also requested prayer for this person, stating,”pray for the angry woman who smashed out my parents’ windows in the middle of the night in an act of pro-choice violence. Please pray that she will somehow find healing and hope. And please pray that every pro-lifer she meets will treat her with the kind of respect and attentive compassion that she deserves, so she will know that she is loved.”

Birth Control Pill At 40

By SUSAN BRINKMANN, For The Bulletin

Sunday, September 6, 2009
A few days ago, our country marked a pivotal milestone in the history of the American family. Forty years ago, on September 4, 1969, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared the new birth control pill to be “safe” for use by women to regulate births.

Forty years later, the true safety of oral contraception is still in question, mostly because the issue of birth control remains mired in politics and in the control of special interest groups who have an enormous financial and ideological interest in making sure the pill is deemed safe for use.

It has been this way from the very beginning.

The birth control pill was the dying wish of Margaret Sanger, a committed eugenicist and the founder of Planned Parenthood. She was 72 years old when she finally found someone willing to develop a “magic pill” that would prevent “undesirable” women, blacks, ethnics and the poor, from breeding.

In 1951, steroid biologist Dr. Gregory Goodwin Pincus of the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and Dr. John Rock, a clinical professor of gynecology at Harvard Medical School, took on the assignment with a $40,000 grant from Planned Parenthood.

Because it was already known that fertility could be controlled led by hormones, it took Pincus only a year to determine that progesterone did indeed work as an anti-ovulent in rabbits and rats. By 1956, drug maker G.D. Searle and Company, developed Enovid, the first birth control pill. But in order for the new drug to be approved by the FDA, it had to be tested on humans.

According to Robert Marshall and Charles Donovan in Blessed are the Barren, the drug was first tested in 1956 on a group of Puerto Rican women. A year later, tests were expanded to women in Haiti and Mexico City. Planned Parenthood clinician affiliates also began to field test the Pill in various U.S. cities.

Serious health problems arose almost immediately. While the pill successfully prevented ovulation, it also caused blood clots and strokes. Eleven deaths were reported but Searle maintained that there was no conclusive evidence that the Pill caused those deaths.

During the testing period, many women complained of various side effects from the Pill – everything from headaches to nausea – but their complaints were largely dismissed as exaggerations.

In spite of evidence to the contrary, Searle managed to convince the FDA that the drug was safe. In a May 11, 1960 memo, the FDA agreed, saying it based its conclusion on tests of 897 women who had used the Pill. However, the memo also admits that only 132 of those women were actually tested, some after only a year of use.

Thus, on the basis of 132 of 897 women who used the Pill for a relatively short period of time, a powerful oral steroid unique in the history of medicine was pronounced safe and beneficial for all women of childbearing age,” Marshall and Donovan write.

Much publicity followed, along with hard-sell tactics from the drug industry. “For example, Searle urged its sales people to avoid any mention of side effects like cancer and nausea and to ‘make the doctors want to use’ Enovid by portraying it as ‘the most effective contraceptive known to man’,” Marshall and Donovan write.

Safety issues would continue to dog the new pill. Reports of serious medical complications such as thromboembolism (TE) began to come from England, including a number of fatal cases. In December of 1961, it was discovered that the FDA had investigated the deaths of two Los Angeles women, and was investigating six other deaths.

When this news came to light, Searle’s stock plummeted. However, the company continued to claim that “there is no evidence to suggest this causal relationship . . . between Enovid therapy and the development of thromboembolism.”

During that same year, the FDA was actively investigating 350 cases of TE and deaths associated with Enovid and concluded that death from TE did indeed increase for Enovid users over the age of 35.

Public anxiety rose, and the FDA decided to handle it by endorsing a new study. But instead of assigning it to disinterested scientists, it was given to Searle and Planned Parenthood – the two principal promoters of the pill. Naturally, they concluded that their pill was safe. However, as Marshall and Donovan point out, their study omitted any deaths occurring in women before 24 months of use even though the vast majority of deaths were known to occur within the first six months of use.

In 1966, the FDA formed an Advisory Committee on Obstetrics and Gynecology which also declared the pill to be safe. Of the thirteen committee members and consultants that formed the group, four were directly associated with Planned Parenthood, which was, by now enjoying tremendous profits from the sale of the pill.

The situation reached a peak in the 1970’s when congressional hearings chaired by Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-WI) were convened to address safety concerns. During these hearings, Sen. Nelson said that the literature being supplied to women on the pill “is inaccurate. It is misleading 8,500,000 women in this country and it has been doing it for ten years.”

Planned Parenthood’s Dr. Alan Guttmacher [ Ex – Vice President of the American Eugenics Society] responded by saying the government had no right to tell them what to write in the literature and that such important medical information belonged to doctors, not women.

“From 1965 to 1980, approximately half of the members of the FDA’s obstetric and gynecology advisory committees were affiliated in some way with Planned Parenthood,” Marshall and Donovan write.

The love affair between the Pill, the FDA and drug companies continues to this day – and so do the safety problems.

The Couple to Couple League reports that as of the early 1990’s, there were 13.8 million women in the U.S. on the pill and 60 million worldwide (conservative numbers). There are 7.9 pill-related deaths per 100,000 women ages 15-44, which results in more than 1,000 deaths a year in the U.S. alone.

END PART ONE

Due to the cozy relationship between the Pill, the FDA and drug companies, it remains almost impossible to get unbiased information about the safety of the birth control pill.

However, a recent study by researchers at the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands and published in the August 13, 2009 issue of the British Medical Journal, found that some of the original safety concerns about the pill remain to this day.

In this study, researchers analyzed 26 different oral contraceptives in use by 3,000 women and determined that the pill can increase the risk of suffering a clot known as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the leg or lungs up to fivefold.

The study found that “second generation” pills first used in the 1970s, which contained low levels of estrogen combined with a second hormone levonorgestrel, were the safest.

Newer “third generation” pills, which have been available since the 1980s, which contained a hormone called desogestrel, carried twice the risk of DVT than the second generation medication.

New “gimmick” versions of the pill are also wreaking havoc on womens bodies.

For instance, Norplant, an injectable contraceptive that remains in the body for five years, was pulled off the market in 2002 for causing many problems such as ovarian cysts, hair loss and dangerous blood clots. Tens of thousands of lawsuits were filed against American Home Products, the manufacturer, but the company insists they did nothing wrong.

Studies released in 2004 regarding Depo Privera, another injectable version of the pill, found that many women who used this form of birth control suffer a serious loss of bone density which leads to osteoporosis. This loss of bone density appears to be permanent and does not return to normal after discontinued use.

Pills such as Mircette and Orth Tri-Cyclen, which contain a compound called desogestrel, are also the target of class action lawsuits from women who suffered blood clots with girls as young as 16 having died from their use

The trendy Ortho Evra patch, which delivers the same hormones as the pill through a patch worn on the skin, has also proven deadly. Introduced in 2002, it caused 17 deaths and dozens of adverse reactions in women in just the first two years after its introduction. It remains on the market.

Yasmin or “Yaz”, designed for women who have trouble with pill side effects, contains a synthetic progestin known as drospirenone. According to a lawsuit recently filed against Bayer, the manufacturer, more than 50 women died after taking the drug in the four years since it was introduced, some as young as 17 years old.

The FDA also approved emergency contraception, known as Plan B, which contains unusually high doses of the same stroke and blood-clotting hormone found in lower doses of the pill which require a prescription. Not only was it approved, but it is now available over-the-counter without a doctor’s prescription to women age 17 or older.

The underlying problem is a total lack of honesty,” concludes Judie Brown, president of the American Life League. “Women are regarded as human guinea pigs with no right to be fully informed. Much of the literature about the birth control pill and other hormonal contraceptives is deceptive, because the federal government has no interest in exposing disturbing facts about them.”

Birth control pills are treated differently than other drugs with life-threatening side effects, she says. Perhaps this is because the pill permits men to engage in sexual promiscuity without responsibility, or because the pill is marketed as liberating women from the fear of pregnancy, she speculates. But the bottom line is that the government is not doing enough to protect women.

Apparently, the government’s interest in helping to line the pockets of pharmaceutical companies and pill-pushing organizations such as Planned Parenthood trumps its interest in telling the truth. Until this tragic situation changes, there will be no accurate accounting of exactly how many women the birth control pill has killed.”
