Hardball on MSNBC- Chris Matthews discusses abortion and health care 11-10-2009

JONATHAN ALLEN, Politico reporter: She [Nancy Pelosi] did do one incredible political thing the other night. She had the Conference of Catholic Bishops in one room, the pro-choice lawmakers in the other.

CHRIS MATTHEWS, “Hardball” host: No but actually on the Hill? The bishops showed up?

ALLEN: On the Hill. She has two conference rooms.

MATTHEWS: Did the bishops show up?

ALLEN: The bishops showed up.

MATTHEWS: They shouldn’t have.

ALLEN: Two conference rooms. She did shuttle diplomacy between them.

MATTHEWS: Well I’ll tell ya that’s, the clergy should stay off Capitol Hill. Anyway thank you Jonathan Allen. I understand the argument. Don’t show up.

MATTHEWS: I first want to clear up something. We had a report a moment ago that bishops of the Catholic Church were actually on Capitol Hill this weekend. Apparently staffers from the U.S. Conference of [Catholic] Bishops were doing the lobbying, not the actual bishops. I want to clear that up, it’s important.

Imagine if he said, “Blacks or Jews should stay off Capitol Hill?” What would be the response – He’d be FIRED !

Meanwhile: Rep. Lynn Woolsey, a California Democrat dismayed by the House vote over the weekend to prohibit taxpayer subsidies for insurance policies that cover abortion in the healthcare overhaul, is saying maybe the IRS should investigate the tax-exempt status of the Catholic Church following its lobbying effort for the restriction.

Doesn’t the Catholic Church provide Health Insurance and don’t Catholic Hospitals exist which accept Health Insurance, so why are these so-called “Tolerant” Liberals acting like religious bigots?

And from a Pro-Abortion so-called Reverend: Rev. Donna Schaper is the Senior Pastor at the Judson Memorial Church in New York City.
ina letter posted on Beliefnet:

When Roman Catholics take up a separate offering to remove abortion from federal funding and send their people home with an experience of the body of Christ – and a postcard to send to their congressional representatives – they violate both the body of Christ and the constitution…The reason hate is so tempting is that we are in fact so close to our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters. In the name of all that is good about Jesus and his international body, I spend a good bit of time praying for the hate and anger to subside. I also pray for the right lawsuit to stop my sisters and brothers from abusing the constitution by handing out post cards and taking up special offerings. Protestants may be plain but we frown on this sort of imperial moral legislating. We actually believe in the separation of Church and State and hope no (consenting and believing) Catholic will ever have an abortion…A good lawsuit against the postcards would go a long way towards resolving this dilemma. Then we might go back to living on a fair and even playing field when it comes to politics, theocracies and women’s rights.

Sounds to me that this is a “personal objection” I know plenty of Protestants who are speaking out politically and morally – Clergy and All. Who does she think she is to speak for us? Gee- where is her outrage to the Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson or the Rev. Jim Wallis ? Just Sayn?

But here is a CRAZY twist:

According to Cliff Kincaid Left-Wing Financier, George Soros ( is funneling money to Catholic organizations to “influence” their positions:

He writes:
The critical role of the Catholic Church in passing national health care reform legislation is coming under serious media scrutiny. But the story has taken a strange turn. It has now been revealed that George Soros, the billionaire hedge fund operator and well-known atheist, has been pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into “progressive” Catholic groups that are significant players in the national debates over health care and immigration.

On the surface, it would appear that Soros would be opposed to many positions of the Catholic Church.

A major financial backer of the ACLU, Soros supports such causes as drug legalization, the rights of “sex workers” and felons, euthanasia, radical feminism, abortion rights, and homosexual rights. He does all of this in the name of promoting an “open society.”
But a review of the records of his Open Society Institute finds that a group calling itself

Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good (CACG) has received $200,000 from them over the last several years…

Although CACG describes itself as “a lay Catholic organization that works to promote the common good and the broad spectrum of Catholic social teaching,” Frank Walker of the conservative Pewsitter website labels it a religious and political Trojan Horse designed to mislead Catholics and produce votes for the Democratic Party.

One purpose of the Soros money, Walker says, is to play down the importance of the abortion issue to Catholics and even make abortion rights a “respectable” Catholic position.
