Police Tase Black Pregnant Women

Chicago Police and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating, after an officer used a stun gun on a pregnant woman, after she tore up a parking ticket during an argument with police in the Roseland neighborhood.

Police confirmed there was an incident at 103rd Street and Michigan Avenue, in the parking lot of a Walgreens, around 8:25 p.m. Tuesday. They said two adults were arrested, and police used a stun gun on a woman during the incident.

But the woman, 30-year-old Tiffany Rent, said police had no cause to use a stun gun on her, and that police were verbally abusive after shocking her.

At eight months pregnant, Rent said she was still in pain as she left South Misdemeanor Court, behind the Area South police headquarters, at 727 E. 111th St.

Her sister, Sharita Rent, said Tiffany was trying to console her young daughter when she pulled into the handicapped space in the Walgreens parking lot, but that police pounced the minute she pulled in.

“She pulled up in a handicapped space. The police came behind her, and she said they blocked her in. She asked them, were they writing her a ticket, and they told her yes,” Sharita Rent said. “She tried to explain to them what happened, as far as her little getting out of the car, and her trying to calm her down and console her, and the guy gave her a ticket for $200. She ripped the ticket up, tore it in half, and threw it on the ground.”

CBS 2′s Jim Williams reports Tiffany Rent admitted a police officer gave her a ticket for parking in the handicapped spot, and she tore it up, but she insisted that what came next was not justified.

“I got scared, and closed the door. I didn’t hit him. I didn’t mean to harm him, or anything. He Tasered me through the window,” she said.

She was taken to Roseland Hospital, where she claims other officers mocked her.

“They were laughing. They said … I know she’s pregnant. Then one of the other officers said I deserve it. Another officer said, ‘Go get Jesse Jackson,'” she said. “They were all laughing, like it was so funny.”

The police report alleges Rent cursed the officer and threw the shredded ticket in his face, then tried to drive off, despite the officer’s warning that she not move.

Police Supt. Garry McCarthy would only say the incident is being investigated, but did describe why an officer — theoretically — might have used a stun gun.

“First of all, you can’t always tell if somebody’s pregnant. You want to use it where you’re overcoming an assault, or preventing escape,” he said.

He added, “That policy has been in effect for quite some time. Whether or not the policy has been adhered to is going to be examined separately from the investigation into the use of force.”

Tiffany Rent was ticketed for illegally parking in a handicapped spot and charged with misdemeanor resisting arrest and simple assault. Also arrested was Joseph Hobbs, Rent’s boyfriend and the father of the child, who scuffled with officers. He was also charged with resisting arrest and simple assault.

Rent was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, and it appeared that the baby was unharmed, police told the Tribune. But Rent has lost three babies in the past, her family told the Chicago Tribune.

Rent’s mother said she can’t believe her daughter deserved to be stunned.

“She’s a nice, caring, giving person. Yeah, she’s real sweet. She’s real sweet. That’s what I don’t understand why they would do that to her,” Tonie Rent said.

McCarthy said the Independent Police Review Authority is investigating Rent’s complaint of excessive force. As part of that investigation, the IPRA is looking at surveillance video from the Walgreen’s parking lot.

CFL light bulbs health hazard for babies and pregnant women due to mercury

A Report published in the UK Reads: Eco-bulbs ‘a health hazard for babies and pregnant women due to mercury inside’

Energy-saving light bulbs were at the centre of a fresh health scare last night after researchers claimed they can release potentially harmful amounts of mercury if broken.

Levels of toxic vapour around smashed eco-bulbs were up to 20 times higher than the safe guideline limit for an indoor area, the study said.

It added that broken bulbs posed a potential health risk to pregnant women, babies and small children.

The concerns surround ‘compact fluorescent lamps’ (CFLs), the most common type of eco-bulb in Britain, which are mini-versions of the strip lights found in offices.

The European Union is phasing out the traditional ‘incandescent bulbs’ used for more than 120 years and is forcing people to switch to low-energy alternatives to meet its climate change targets.

A CFL uses a fifth of the energy of a conventional bulb and can save £7 a year in bills. However, critics complain that CFLs’ light is harsh and flickery. Medical charities say they can trigger epileptic fits, migraines and skin rashes and have called for an ‘opt out’ for vulnerable people.

Incandescent bulbs do not contain mercury, along with other variants of energy-saving lights, such as LEDs and halogen bulbs. The study, for Germany’s Federal Environment Agency, tested a ‘worst case’ scenario using two CFLs, one containing 2 milligrams of mercury and the other 5 milligrams. Neither lamp had a protective casing and both were broken when hot.

Scientists at the Fraunhofer Wilhelm Klauditz Institute found that they released around 7 micrograms (there are 1,000 micrograms in a milligram) per cubic metre of air.The official guideline limit is 0.35 micrograms per cubic metre.

Federal Environment Agency president Jochen Flasbarth said: ‘The presence of mercury is the downside to energy-saving lamps. We need a lamp technology that can prevent mercury pollution soon.

‘The positive and necessary energy savings of up to 80 per cent as compared with light bulbs must go hand in hand with a safe product that poses no risks to health.’

During tests the German government agency’s researchers were alarmed to discover that some bulbs had no protective cover and broke when hot.

High levels of mercury were measured at floor level up to five hours after the bulbs failed.

A spokesman for the agency said: ‘Children and expectant mothers should keep away from burst energy-saving lamps.

‘For children’s rooms and other areas at higher risk of lamp breakage, we recommend the use of energy-saving lamps that are protected against breakage.’ However, the UK Government insisted the CFL bulbs were safe – and that the risk from a one-off exposure was minimal.

The Health Protection Agency says a broken CFL is unlikely to cause health problems. However, it advises people to ventilate a room where a light has smashed and evacuate it for 15 minutes.

Householders are also advised to wear protective gloves while wiping the area of the break with a damp cloth and picking up fragments of glass. The cloth and glass should be placed in a plastic bag and sealed.

CFLs are not supposed to be put in the dustbin, whether broken or intact, but taken as hazardous waste to a recycling centre.

A spokesman for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said: ‘Guidance from the Health Protection Agency makes it clear that the mercury contained in low energy bulbs does not pose a health risk to anyone immediately exposed, should one be broken.’

Friends of the Earth said the switch to low-energy bulbs would reduce exposure to mercury from coal-fired power stations.

BATON ROUGE, (WAFB) – The 23-year-old Baton Rouge man hailed as hero after saving a pregnant woman from an armed robbery is expected to make a full recovery.

Charlie Cangelosi is the son of David Cangelosi, the owner of one of the city’s best-known construction firms named Cangelosi and Ward.

David and Carolyn Cangelosi said the past two days have been an absolute nightmare. They have not left their son’s side and they remain optimistic.

“We’re so proud of him,” said Carolyn Cangelosi. “So happy he’s alive and everything is going to be fine and we’re just so proud that he’s our son.”

She said it’s hard to think back to early Sunday morning just after midnight. That’s when her son he was shot in the chest after helping save a pregnant 20-year-old woman during an armed robbery. It happened on Earl Gros, just outside Stadium Square Apartments near Tigerland.

“Not surprised. I would be surprised if he had not helped her. If he had walked away and stayed healthy, he would never have been happy for the rest his life. This is what he was supposed to do and he did it,” she explained.

The Cangelosis stated Charlie’s room has been flooded with visitors, all hoping to catch a glimpse of a person being hailed as a hero.

“As far as responding to being a hero or a ‘Good Samaritan,’ he just shakes his head, no. I think he’s feeling that’s not what this was all about,” his mother added.

For almost two days now, his parents say he’s in a medically-induced coma, but did wake up on his own on Sunday, which is a good sign. He had another surgery Monday and faces yet another surgery Thursday.

“We’re in the middle of the woods. We’re not out of the woods, so we still have a long ways to go, but he’s doing great,” she said.

Carolyn and David Cangelosi said they are praying for Charlie’s shooter and have found it in their heart to forgive him and give them help.

The suspect remains on the run.

Dr. Bob Sears: Government Okays Untested Vaccine for Pregnant Women

Government Okays Untested Vaccine for Pregnant Women
By Dr. Bob Sears

I usually don’t get all worked up over vaccine issues. I calmly promote the idea of alternative vaccine schedules and I like to help parents make educated decisions. But when I see the government try to do something really stupid, I get mad. And right now I am really angry. The last time I got mad was when the government decided it was OK to give pregnant women mercury-containing H1N1 flu vaccines.

A pharmaceutical rep just came into my office and handed me a letter stating that the California Department of Public Health has advised all Californian women of childbearing age get the Tdap vaccine. They state “preferably before pregnancy, but otherwise during or after pregnancy.”

Now I can understand and applaud their zeal in wanting to combat the pertussis epidemic. Pertussis is dangerous for young infants. Usually about 20 infants die each year from pertussis, and this year we are headed for about 30 or 40. Making sure new moms and dads have some pertussis protection makes sense.

On the other hand, the Tdap (or ANY pertussis vaccine for that matter) has NEVER been tested for safety during pregnancy. The vaccine product insert, as well as the letter I got from the pharmaceutical company, states very clearly that the vaccine is not indicated for pregnant women and has never been tested.

So what right does the California Department of Public Health have to allow the use of an untested vaccine in pregnant women? I suppose they have every right. But it just doesn’t feel right to me. New moms can get the vaccine right after their baby is born. Dads can get it during the pregnancy to get a head start. If the vaccine works so well, that should be good enough. Women don’t need to get it during pregnancy.

At least there’s no mercury in the Tdap vaccine! But still, we have absolutely NO indication that this vaccine is safe during pregnancy. Parents beware.

A Note on the CDC’s Website warns that :

Pregnancy is not a contraindication for use of Tdap.
Data on safety, immunogenicity and the outcomes of pregnancy are not available for pregnant women who receive Tdap. When Tdap is administered during pregnancy, transplacental maternal antibodies might protect the infant against pertussis in early life. They also could interfere with the infant’s immune response to infant doses of DTaP, and leave the infant less well protected against pertussis. 11<
