How many women died from illegal abortions prior to Roe v. Wade?

Pro-abortion professor testifies against Heartbeat Bill using bogus, debunked abortion statistics

Prior to the legalization of abortion, those who sought to legally end the lives of preborn children falsely marketed their position by claiming that women were dying by the thousands (and even millions) from illegal abortions. However, there is absolutely no evidence to back up those figures.

Despite this, those figures continue to be repeated by abortion advocates any time they sense that the so-called “right” to abortion is potentially in jeopardy.

A pro-abortion professor, testifying under oath before Congress, unfortunately used these disputed and highly suspect statistics regarding the number of women who died from illegal abortions in an effort to oppose the federal pro-life Heartbeat bill, HR490, which proposes to stop abortions at a point when it can be documented that the preborn child’s heartbeat can be detected:

Prof Priscilla Smith testifies HR490 Heartbeat abortion bill

In her testimonyProfessor Priscilla Smith claimed that 5,000 women died annually from illegal abortions prior to Roe v. Wade:

Women have been obtaining abortions since the beginning of time, before Roe when abortions were illegal… An estimated 1.2 million women each year still resorted to illegal abortion in the US. As many as 5000 of these women — already born – living, breathing, lungs working, hearts beating, women, many with children at home who depended on them — 5,000 of them died each year as a result of illegal abortions and many more were severely injured. This is the world we would return to if HR490 went into effect….

But the facts don’t agree with Smith’s claims. A 1975 report by National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, entitled, “Legalized Abortion and the Public Health: Report of a Study,” disputes these statistics (emphasis added):

It is difficult to find credible estimates of the number of deaths associated with illegal abortion. One estimate, which has been frequently quoted, is between 5,000 and 10,000 deaths per year. That is hardly plausible, considering that the total number of deaths of women aged 15-44 from all causes in the United States is approximately 50,000 annually, and the total number of deaths due to abortion reported by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has been below 500 since 1958 and below 100 since 1971.

The 5,000 figure originates from a piecemeal of several sources based largely on assumptions, and comes straight from the largest abortion lobby group in the nation: National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL.)  NARAL’s footnote quotes from a source that allegedly “discussed Dr. Christopher Tietze’s estimate of nearly 8,000 deaths from illegal abortion annually in the United States.” The truth is that Tietze disputed the 5,000 to 10,000 number, as did records of maternal deaths reviewed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the years just prior to national legalization.

NARAL Footnotes on illegal abortion deaths

In fact, in Lawrence Lader’s book “Abortion,” also sourced, he clearly states, “Tietze places the figure nearer 1,000.” But, as Dr. John C. Willke explains in the video below, that trend decreased over time:

Tietze was a senior consultant to the Center for Policy Studies of the Population Council, a radical organization founded by John D. Rockefeller III. That organization’s second president was Frederic Osborn, a founding member of the American Eugenics Society who signed Margaret Sanger’s “Citizens Committee for Planned Parenthood,” published in her review in April of 1938. (Osborn may have coined Planned Parenthood’s “Every Child a Wanted Child” slogan, and once wrote, “Eugenic goals are most likely attained under a name other than eugenics.”)

In 1967, Dr. Tietze, who was speaking at a conference on abortion sponsored by the Harvard Divinity School and Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, called the 5,000 illegal abortion deaths, “unmitigated nonsense,” according to a September 13, 1967 article in the Berkshire Eagle.  The paper went on to give substantially fewer numbers by Tietze, writing, “The known deaths attributed to abortion in 1964 were 247 and he thinks it is fairly safe to estimate that the real figure may be double that, even a little more, but certainly no more than a thousand.” Note that Dr. Tietze was no pro-lifer: In 1973, he was awarded Planned Parenthood’s infamousMargaret Sanger Award, named after a eugenicist who gave at least one speech to the Ku Klux Klan.

The Kingsport News reported on that same conference, pointing out that Tietze disputed the reported illegal abortion totals, which some claimed ranged from 200,000 to 1.2 million annually. The paper quotes Tietze as saying, “we have no real basis for guessing which extreme is closer to the truth.”

Tietze disputes illegal abortion deaths, 1967

Tietze, who favored abortion on demand, also opined that legalizing abortion would “not have a big impact on mortality.”

The Register, a Virginia paper, notes in its article entitled, “Supporters of Liberal Abortion Laws use Inflated Statistics, Expert says,” that Tietze suggested that the larger numbers (5,000 to 10,000) were made up to scare politicians into legalizing abortion. “The higher estimates are made by people who feel in order to raise sympathy for liberalized abortion laws they have to make people afraid.”

Tietze was right.

Dr. Bernard Nathanson, one of the early founders of NARAL (then known as the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws), revealed that he and his colleagues fabricated the large numbers of deaths from illegal abortion in an attempt to sway public opinion toward making abortion legal.

In his book, “The Abortion Papers,” Dr. Nathanson admitted that the 5,000 to 10,000 figure which was fed “to the public and the media in the late 1960’s,” was fabricated because it was a “nice, round, shocking figure.” And, just like they do today, the media — willingly and with no documentation — repeated that figure with no demand for proof.

However, there was data available, and it didn’t support those fabricated figures.

On October 19, 1959, Mary S. Calderone, a medical director of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, presented a paper before the Maternal and Child Health Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA) at the Eighty-Seventh Annual Meeting in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where she also gave far fewer numbers than Professor Smith:

In 1957 there were only 260 deaths in the whole country attributed to abortions of any kind. In New York City in 1921 there were 144 abortion deaths, in 1951 there were only 15; and, while the abortion death rate was going down so strikingly in that 30-year period, we know what happened to the population and the birth rate.

In 1967, New York Assemblyman, Albert Blumenthal, who sponsored a law to legalize abortion that year, was quoted by the media as claiming that between 35 and 60 deaths from illegal abortions were reported in New York City annually. That same year, an Illinois Health Director by the name of Dr. Herbert Ratner called the 5,000 to 10,000 figure “outlandish,” noting, “This hardly leaves room for deaths from other causes.”

1967 article Illegal abortion Chicago Tribune

Dr. Ratner also correctly warned that the liberalization of abortion, which he called “exterminative medicine,” would start a dangerous trend in medicine — a prophetic insight America has sadly seen come true.

By 1969, the very first abortion surveillance report was published by the Centers for Disease Control, noting a “lack of accurate incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality data” on abortion. At that time, five states had passed abortion legislation and 24 others had bills under review. According to this same CDC report, in 1966, the National Center for Health Statistics reported 189 maternal deaths from abortion complications.  And, while no one would diminish those numbers, they are a far cry from the 5,000 touted by Professor Smith.

By 1970, the CDC reported that in just a six month period (July to December), out of sixteen reported abortions in New York City, eight women — yes, HALF — had died from legal (not illegal) abortions. In total, the 1970 report states that 25 women died in New York City (where abortion had been liberalized), and eleven of those were from illegal abortions. The report also noted that Black and Puerto Rican women suffered higher legal abortion mortality rates.

According to that CDC document, “although there was substitution of legal for illegal abortion deaths, no significant decrease in total abortion mortality occurred following institution of the new law….”

CDC Abortion Deaths, 1970

In 1972, the year prior to national legalization, CDC reports revealed that deaths from illegal abortion were nothing close to Professor Smith’s 5,000 figure. In this table from the CDC report (shown below), just 39 women died from illegal abortion in 1972 while 24 died from legal abortion.

CDC Abortion deaths 1972 to 1990

Live Action News previously documented that the majority of illegal abortions were performed by physicians, and many of those same doctors went on to perform legal abortions, some of whom have seriously injured and even killed women. But, today, instead of protecting the women who are being butchered or are dying from legal abortion, advocates like Professor Smith spew made up numbers from the illegal abortion days.

It would appear that abortion advocates do not actually care about the safety of women or even about real statistics; they care only about legalizing abortion at any cost.

Did NARAL Abortion Rights Prez attend VP Joe Biden’s Christmas Party?

On December 17, 2013 , NARAL which stands for National Abortion Rights Action League or Pro-choice.org’s president, Ilyse Hogue, posted this on her facebook page:, “Holiday party at VP and Dr. Biden’s residence with fab Finney and friends.”

NARAL BIDEN HOLIDAY PARTY

I wasn’t sure if this was US President Joe Biden’s party, so I looked for images of his recent celebration for comparison.

A photo that The Hill’s White House correspondent Amie Parnes posted to her Facebook page of a Christmas party appears to show Biden with his right hand perilously close to an off-limits area of the reporter’s body — and her hands tensely holding the border.

What do you think? Does it look like Vice President Joe Biden’s Residence? What will NARAL say about Joe Manhandling a reporter?

The recent attacks on our freedoms affect women first and foremost, but are an affront to all people who hold human rights as a value. We want men on our team, not only at the elected level but at the grassroots level too. This is how we show solidarity and how we win.” ~ Ilyse Hogue, NARAL’s president.

TEXT:

The National Abortion Rights Action League is dragging out a campaign called Men for Choice as if this is some sort of revolutionary new concept. The reality is, and polls have consistently shown, that men have always been their strongest supporters. If fact, this is a reflection of why the early feminist leaders in this country were openly opposed to the legalization of abortion. They understood that legalized abortion has nothing to do with women’s equality. Women don’t need surgery to be equal to men. What abortion is, is a safety net for sexually predatory and sexually irresponsible males. It gives these guys a way to avoid any commitments to the women whose bodies they use or any responsibility for the children they father. Not only that, but the woman are the ones who take all the risks associated with the operation.

And not only did these early feminist leaders know this, men know it too. And men like those I just described, take advantage of it. That’s why, today, American society has devolved to the point where a male’s responsibility for an unplanned pregnancy he helped to create is often defined as a willingness to pay for half the abortion and provide transportation to the clinic.

Let’s also not forget what sometimes happens when a woman refuses to jump into this safety net. This Life Dynamics report documents about 100 cases in which women who refused their partners demands to have abortions, were then brutally murdered by those men. And our research made it crystal clear that the victims named here are just the tip of an enormous iceberg.

So if you are female, before you jump into bed with someone, it would be a good idea to find out his position on abortion. After all, you don’t want to be like the women listed here and find out the hard way that the kind of man who can be pro-choice about your baby could also be pro-choice about you.

The bottom line is, if you want to submit to an abortion, then the way the law is right now you can do so. But don’t be so blind, or so pathetically naïve, that you think abortions are done for the benefit of women. After all, if the people promoting this “Men for Choice” campaign can figure out whose bread is being buttered, so can you.

Abortion in 1966: Three Men Weigh in On Women’s Rights
Number 43
Thursday, July 12, 2012 – 04:30 PM

Abortion was the topic of this 1966 broadcast of Main Currents, hosted by Lee Graham. Three panelists (all men) used the recent introduction of a bill that would “liberalize” existing abortion restrictions as a springboard for a wide-ranging discussion of the practice both in the United States and abroad, and for exploring the historical basis for such restrictions and what the future may hold.

There were no abortion opponents present. Indeed, the only opposition mentioned was the Roman Catholic Church, and even that institution, one of the participants assures, is “approaching a state of fluidity greater than what we’ve seen in previous years.” This sober, for the most part reasoned, conversation is striking in its contrast to the fanatic rhetoric to come.

The three panelists were Alfred Julien, a trial lawyer conversant with the abortion law and how the proposed bill (introduced by State Senator Percy Sutton) would change access to abortions; Dr. Robert Hall, an obstetrician; and Lawrence Lader, a journalist who would become well known as a crusader for women’s reproductive rights. Currently, Hall explains, a legal abortion can only be performed to preserve the life, but not the health, of the mother. This crucial distinction, he argues, “prevents us from practicing good medicine.” Julien, the lawyer, calls the present law “harsh and restrictive.” Lader, instead of focusing narrowly on the legal or medical aspects of the debate, sees abortion as a civil rights issue. He quotes Margaret Sanger, who said, “No woman can call herself free who does not own and control her own body.”

Lader was a major voice in the abortion debate for four decades, becoming a lightning rod for its critics as well as a beacon for its proponents. He wrote influential books and articles on the subject, organized ministers to refer women wanting abortions to doctors as well as referring 2,000 himself, helped found what was long known as the National Abortion Rights Action League and helped win New York State’s repeal of abortion restrictions in 1970.

Note to the media: NARAL opposed PA’s abortion restrictions they now applaud against Gosnell

Posted in NARAL with tags , , , , , on May 7, 2013 by saynsumthn

According to a 2008, CNS News report: The National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) rated Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge a “D.” as a potential vice presidential candidates in 2008.

NARAL executive vice president Alice Germond faulted Ridge for doing nothing to change the fact that Pennsylvania has some of the strictest abortion laws in the country.

Ridge, was pro-choice and according to the Gosnell Grand Jury Report:

After Gov. Tom Ridge, who supports abortion rights, was elected, the state Department of Health stopped inspecting abortion clinics. “Officials concluded that inspections would be ‘putting a barrier up to women’ seeking abortions” and decided “to leave clinics to do as they pleased,” states the report. That practice continued under Gov. Mark Schweiker and Gov. Ed Rendell. It was not until after a drug raid in February 2010 at Gosnell’s clinic that the Health Department resumed regular abortion clinic inspections, according to The Associated Press. Since then 14 of the state’s 22 freestanding abortion clinics have been ordered to remedy problems…

After 1993, even that pro forma effort came to an end. Not because of administrative ennui, although there had been plenty. Instead, the Pennsylvania Department of Health abruptly decided, for political reasons, to stop inspecting abortion clinics at all. The politics in question were not anti-abortion, but pro. With the change of administration from Governor Casey to Governor Ridge, officials concluded that inspections would be “putting a barrier up to women” seeking abortions. Better to leave clinics to do as they pleased, even though, as Gosnell proved, that meant both women and babies would pay. (Per Grand Jury Report)

• “…the Pennsylvania Department of Health abruptly decided, for political reasons, to stop inspecting abortion clinics at all. The politics in question were not anti-abortion, but pro. • Two evaluators who conducted site reviews of Gosnell’s clinic in 1989 or the early 1990s and found violations, but did not follow up to make sure they were corrected.
• Sometime after 1993, the department instituted a policy of inspecting abortion clinics only when there was a complaint, but the grand jury found that it didn’t even do that.

naralvTomRidgepf4
On July 13, 2000 NARAL executive vice president Alice Germond released report cards grading the ten most frequently mentioned Democratic and Republican vice presidential candidates on the issue of choice. Thtey gave Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge a “D.”

As far as being horrified by Gosnell and how he killed the babies – NOT! Read this 2000 Washington Post interview with Alice Germond the executive vice president of the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, regarding Partial Birth Abortion (HERE)

Rockville, Md.: If, under the potential Bush administration, partial-birth abortions are banned (with exception to the health of the mother, which seems to be the key dividing point), is this something Planned Parenthood will vigorously fight?

Alice Germond: Well I don’t know. I am not an official of Planned Parenthood. But my sense is that that would not be their position and that is not NARAL’s position. The term “partial-birth” is a made up, hyphenated, non-medical, language put forth to frighten people. NARAL believes that the choice of a procedure prior to fetal viability should be made by the doctor and the woman…not by the politicians. There are cases where there is a potential threat to the woman’s life with certain kinds of procedures and the doctor should be the one to determine which procedure should take place.

Now NARAL wants us to believe that they were against Gosnell and loved the PA abortion restrictions:

Gosnell NARALIS NARAL DELUSIONAL? Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America told the media, “The American people join me and my organization in being outraged that this man was able to operate for years, preying on poor women who desperately needed safe and clean medical services but were unable to get it because of the restrictions that drove credible and reputable providers and doctors out of business in Pennsylvania and we were the first out of the gate to call attention to this case. And you know why?… It’s because unfortunately as the anti-choicers try and restrict more and more doctors out of business, they are the ones keeping the Kermit Gosnells operating.”

On NARAL’s own website they attack the abortion laws:

NARAL PA REstrictions

And here they opposed PA’s Post Viability abortion laws:

NARAL PA ost Viability

Erik Wemple at the Washington Post must think they are, he responded, “Having done precisely 3,454 Nexis and Internet search on the Gosnell case, we missed the part where NARAL had led a charge to highlight the alleged atrocities in West Philadelphia. So we Nexised again, checking on NARAL’s footprint around the time that Gosnell was indicted in January 2011. Not much there. When asked to provide news releases or other evidence of activism around that time, NARAL didn’t provide anything.”

Did NARAL get right on the case? Again, evidence is tough to dredge up. A search of the NARAL site for “Gosnell” yields six results, all of which date to the past two weeks. The earliest of them is an April 16 statement by NARAL’s director of communications. It reads, in part:
Kermit Gosnell’s actions were reprehensible, illegal and reminiscent of back-alley abortions from the days before Roe v. Wade. The conditions in Gosnell’s clinic were horrific, demonstrating what can happen to women when abortion isn’t available through safe and legal providers. This is why we work every day to protect the constitutional rights of women to access legal and safe abortion care regardless of income and geography.

MEANWHILE PLANNED PARENTHOOD’S SONG AND DANCE TAKES AN INTERESTING TURN- DID THEIR CEO LIE ABOUT KNOWLEDGE OF GOSNELL?

DaylesteinbergDayle Steinberg is CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Steinberg began her association with Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania (PPSP) in 1978 as a graduate intern, joined the full-time staff in 1981, served as director of surgical services from 1986-1992, then served for eight years as senior vice president, and was appointed president and CEO in 2001.

In February of 2010 WHYY reported that Steinberg denied knowing of any of the horrific conditions at Gosnells’ abortion clinic. They wrote:

Steinberg: We do anticipate that women who might have scheduled appointments for abortion procedures at the Women’s Medical Society will be calling Planned Parenthood.

and then reported, “Steinberg says she knows that Gosnell has provided abortions in Philadelphia for many years, but says she hadn’t heard of any problems at clinic until the allegations surfaced in recent days.”

PPSEPA2010-affiliate-header-91460

PP LIED

But later, according to Philly.com : Steinberg said this about Gosnell at a public fundraiser:

“Steinberg said that when Gosnell was in practice, women would sometimes come to Planned Parenthood for services after first visiting Gosnell’s West Philadelphia clinic, and would complain to staff about the conditions there.

“’We would always encourage them to report it to the Department of Health,’ Steinberg said as she sat with Steinem before Tuesday’s events.”

PP Lied Gosnell

Why would Steinberg lie? Perhaps because abortion deaths and shoddy abortion clinics and botched procedures, are not so UNCOMMON even in Planned Parenthood.
