Is Planned Parenthood scrubbing its eugenicist founder’s name from its awards?

Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger
Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger was a notorious eugenicist whose namesake has been used on Planned Parenthood’s top awards to journalists and others who help the organization push its pro-abortion ideals in society. In addition to meeting with members of the Ku Klux Klan, about which Sanger wrote in her autobiography, the Planned Parenthood founder also advocated forced sterilization to rid the planet of those she deemed “unfit.”

Despite knowing Sanger’s associations with the Klan and eugenics, Planned Parenthood not only named their top awards in Sanger’s honor – they “honored” complicit media, journalists and politicians with no outrage from civil rights organizations or the rest of the media. The presentations fell under two award categories: the “Maggie Award” and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America “Margaret Sanger Award.”

It seems, however, that these awards may have been retired — at least temporarily. The reason is unknown.

2014 Planned Parenthood Maggie Award

Recently awarded were notable media outlets and journalists from MSNBC, Yahoo-Health, Buzzfeed, The New Yorker, CBS, Washington Post, Austin Chronicle, Huffington Post, The Plain Dealer, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, US News & World Report, Waco Tribune-Herald, Chicago Tribune, CNN, NBC, New York Daily News, PBS Frontline, The Kansas City Star, People magazine, San Diego Union-Tribune, ABC News, Los Angeles Times, The Dallas Morning News, The Metro Times, Cedar Rapids Gazette, The Houston Chronicle, Concord Monitor, The Philadelphia Daily News, The San Diego Union, San Francisco Examiner, Newsweek Magazine, Lifetime Television, ABC Radio, Arkansas Gazette, Los Angeles Times, NBC Radio, The Boston Globe, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Bergen Record, Charlotte News and Observer, and Gannett News Service.

Maggie Award:

According to a Planned Parenthood 2015 press release, the “Maggie Award” was “inaugurated in 1978 and named after Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger.” A cached PP website reveals that the award recognized “exceptional contributions by journalists in print, online, and broadcast media that enhance the public’s understanding of reproductive rights and health care issues, including contraception, sex education, teen pregnancy, abortion, and international family planning.”

Today, if you search for the “Maggie Award” which was last issued in 2015, you won’t find it on Planned Parenthood’s website.

Planned Parenthood search Maggie Award (PPFA website 05132019)

The reason?

Planned Parenthood quietly seems to have erased Sanger’s name from that portion of the website. Planned Parenthood simply exchanged the word “Maggie” with “Media,” as demonstrated below.  They did this without fanfare or explanation, offering no denunciation, despite knowing Sanger’s associations with the Klan and eugenics. In fact, Sanger’s name was listed as recently as 2016 — which means that the awards these journalists received were issued in the name of Margaret Sanger, not “Media” — and to date, it seems no one has returned the award or publicly rejected the “honor” named after the eugenicist founder.

This cached version at Way Back Machine is proof to how the website originally read. You can see that the current “Media Excellence” page mirrors the old version referencing the “Maggie Award,” and Sanger is no longer located on the PPFA website.

Margaret Sanger Award

For years, pro-life groups have criticized the fact that Planned Parenthood’s highest award was named after Sanger. The corporation’s “Margaret Sanger Award” is still showing on Planned Parenthood’s website, and reveals it was issued to abortionist Willie Parker, a beloved abortionist recently accused of sexual misconduct in 2015.

Democratic Party leader Nancy Pelosi received the infamous Sanger award the previous year.

What is interesting is that the Maggie Award page (now scrubbed) and the Margaret Sanger Award page both reveal that neither award has been given since 2015. One can only speculate why that is. Perhaps Planned Parenthood is no longer offering the “honors” named after their founder — or is it possible that, because of the exposure by pro-life organizations, few are willing to receive it? The latter seems unlikely, but whatever the reason, Planned Parenthood continues to view Sanger as a heroine, even naming Planned Parenthood facilities after her, as well as several Margaret Sanger Legacy Societies which fundraise for Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

The NY Margaret Sanger Society claims the money they raise will “ensure our future for generations to come.”

The Margaret Sanger Society in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, will “create opportunities to recognize Sanger Society members throughout the year, including an annual event each spring. These events provide members with the opportunity to meet our staff, receive updates on our programs, and visit with other like-minded supporters.”

Planned Parenthood’s legacy is eugenics; their own ties to the disturbing philosophy run very deep, as Live Action News has previously documented.  And the media and PP’s political supporters, which have been regularly “honored” in the name of Sanger, continue to funnel half a billion in taxpayer dollars into the abortion corporation’s coffers year after year.

Planned Parenthood’s founder will never be the kind of person society should “celebrate” — instead she and her eugenics ideology should be denounced.

Pelosi promised Planned Parenthood she wouldn’t pass Obamacare without abortion

Despite former President Barack Obama’s promises that “no federal dollars” would be used “to fund abortions and federal conscience laws would remain in place” under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a recent Tweet by former Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards unintentionally revealed that funding abortion through the ACA was actually part of the plan from the beginning.

In a series of tweetsRichards responded to pushback against Nancy Pelosi being nominated as Speaker of the House in the newly-elected Congress. In her tweets, Richards said she spoke with Pelosi while the ACA was being pushed through, receiving an assurance that abortion would be part of the healthcare act.

“I also find it interesting – though not surprising – that the effort to go after [Pelosi] is being led by four men in Congress,” Richards tweets. “She was the Speaker of the House when we passed the Affordable Care Act. As  has said himself, we would not have the ACA without her.”

Then came this admission:

I will never forget the meeting with her [Speaker Pelosi], when I was at PP, where she told me in the middle of that fight that she would not pass the ACA if it banned insurance coverage for abortion. Though many “progressive” men were willing to throw women under the bus, she was not.

Of course, pro-life advocates saw this coming at the time, despite the claims of Pelosi, who even had trouble wrangling members of her own party to vote for the ACA because of its abortion funding.

Planned Parenthood worked tirelessly to elect President Obama, who told members of a 2007 Planned Parenthood event,  “… In my mind reproductive care is essential care. It is basic care. So, it is at the center and at the heart of the plan that I propose….” ‘Reproductive care’ is frequently used as code for abortion.

Despite the American public’s opposition to taxpayer-funded abortions, Planned Parenthood, with direct assistance from Speaker Pelosi, made certain abortion was in the ACA, and we now know this was a deliberate and calculated effort — a cooperation with the abortion industry.

In 2014, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report that identified 1,036 ACA plans that covered abortion and received taxpayer subsidies. The 2014 report concluded that more than a thousand federally subsidized ACA policies paid for abortion, often unbeknownst to policyholders.

A recent analysis of ACA plans found that, despite existing regulations requiring it, “For 2014… none of the entities interviewed that billed insurance… either itemized abortion on the premium bill or issued a separate bill that clearly named its purpose for abortion.”

To remedy this, the Trump administration issued a new rule to make certain consumers aren’t forced to pay for abortion coverage if they don’t want to. But, of course, Planned Parenthood, which recently issued a new plan to expand abortion, is crying foul.

Why would a rule stating that consumers must be told when their plans cover abortion “make it nearly impossible… to cover abortion”? Perhaps Cecile Richards has an inkling that Americans really aren’t as favorable toward abortion as the abortion industry tries to claim.

Nancy Pelosi did not want to talk about Planned Parenthood.
It was a meeting of House Democrats early in 2017, during Republicans’ drive that March to strike down the Affordable Care Act. Ms. Pelosi and her political lieutenants laid out their counterattack: Democrats would talk about pre-existing conditions and millions of people losing coverage. And they would talk about an “age tax” — a provision in the Obamacare replacement passed by the House, which would have allowed health insurers to widen the premium gap between younger and older customers.

Ms. Pelosi acknowledged it would require restraint from Democrats. In her own San Francisco district, she said, people wanted her to fight the health care battle over funding for Planned Parenthood and Medicaid. “Those things are in our DNA, but they are not in our talking points,” Ms. Pelosi became fond of saying, according to a close associate.

Cecile Richards: (Excerpt Broadly)

“People’s impressions get based on no information,” she said. “One of the reasons I wrote what I did today is because a woman I know said to me the other day something I couldn’t believe. She was like, ‘I need to know where Pelosi is on abortion rights,’ and I was like, ‘Are you kidding? Nancy Pelosi is the reason we still have access to abortion rights under the Affordable Care Act.’”

Richards explained when the Affordable Care Act was on the verge of being passed, many members of Congress were ready to agree to it being passed while excluding abortion coverage.

When Richards visited Pelosi in her office, she said Pelosi looked her in the eye and said, “If there is an abortion ban, there will not be an Affordable Care Act.”

When it comes to criticisms being lobbed against Pelosi, Richards said much of it is “centimeter deep and a mile wide” and based on “whatever GOP line there is out there that day.”

…In terms of Pelosi’s accomplishments, Richards said there is no Speaker who has paralleled what she’s accomplished when leading the majority, and also when leading the minority.

“She’s done it at the same time as helping to build a caucus that’s beginning to look as diverse as the rest of this country,” Richards said. “A caucus with new progressive women, people of color, women of color, LGBTQ people, who are going to rock Capitol Hill. That’s something to look at and recognize.”

In Richards’ eyes, Pelosi deserves to sit in the seat at the table that she fought so for many years to obtain, a seat Richards also believes will be filled by many more women in the future.

Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger spoke to the Klan and supported eugenics. So why does the organization still honor her?

Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger spoke to the Ku Klux Klan and supported eugenics. So why does the organization still honor her?

The media seems to be doing an effective job of condemning many people who have an association with the Klu Klux Klan — but one exception to this seems to be Planned Parenthood’s “beloved” founder, Margaret Sanger. Margaret Sanger is usually described as a “birth control pioneer” who founded Planned Parenthood, but she also met with members of the Klan, advocated eugenics, and supported the use of sterilization to rid the planet of the “unfit.” Sanger wrote about her meeting with the Klan in her autobiography. Yet somehow this fact is made light of, glossed over, or completely ignored by the media.

On page 366 of her autobiography, Sanger described her meeting with the Klan, where she says she received additional invitations to speak with similar groups:

I accepted an invitation to talk to the women’s branch of the Ku Klux Klan…. I saw through the door dim figures parading with banners and illuminated crosses…. I was escorted to the platform, was introduced, and began to speak…. In the end, through simple illustrations I believed I had accomplished my purpose. A dozen invitations to speak to similar groups were proffered.

What about Sanger’s outspoken support for eugenics?

While some may not be entirely familiar with the meaning of “eugenics,” it’s likely that those same people have seen it in action in various ways. Coined in the mid 1800’s by Francis Galton, the cousin of Charles Darwin, eugenics was a popular movement to create a society in which those who were considered “superior” would reproduce… while those who were deemed “inferior” would be encouraged not to reproduce. Tragically, this movement was credited with forcefully sterilizing many men and women. The targets of these horrendous acts were disproportionately Black and poor, according to many reports.

Screenshot of PP honoring Sanger

Eugenics victim Elaine Riddick speaks in the video below about being “cut up like a hog,” thanks to the philosophy of eugenics. Riddick, like some other Black citizens, was forcibly sterilized in North Carolina in 1968. Her tearful testimony encouraged state lawmakers to vote for reparations for those like her, who were eugenically sterilized.

So how does this relate to Planned Parenthood founder, Margaret Sanger? One of the prominent supporters of that horrific eugenics program was Clarence Gamble, and Gamble was a director of Margaret Sanger’s American Birth Control League, which later changed its name to Planned Parenthood.

In Margaret Sanger’s “Birth Control and Racial Betterment,” the Planned Parenthood founder links the goals of eugenics with her own goals of promoting birth control, writing (emphasis added):

We who advocate Birth Control, on the other hand, lay all our emphasis upon stopping not only the reproduction of the unfit but upon stopping all reproduction when there is not economic means of providing proper care for those who are born in health. …While I personally believe in the sterilization of the feeble-minded, the insane and syphilitic, I have not been able to discover that these measures are more than superficial deterrents when applied to the constantly growing stream of the unfit… Eugenics without Birth Control seems to us a house builded upon the sands. It is at the mercy of the rising stream of the unfit….

Sanger called for unfit to be sent to farms (Image credit Maafa21)

Sanger was highly motivated to stop the procreation by those she deemed “unfit.” In a personal letter to Katharine Dexter McCormick in 1950, Sanger called for “a simple, cheap, safe contraceptive to be used in poverty stricken slums, jungles, and among the most ignorant people.”

But, Sanger added, “Even this will not be sufficient, because I believe that now, immediately, there should be national sterilization for certain dysgenic types of our population who are being encouraged to breed and would die out were the government not feeding them.”

In 1932, Sanger also called for those who were poor (and those she considered to be “morons and immoral”) to be shipped to colonies where they would live in “Farms and Open Spaces” dedicated to brainwashing these so-called “inferior types” into having what Sanger called better “moral conduct.”  She specifically wanted to keep “immigration closed to the entrance of certain aliens whose condition is known to be detrimental to the stamina of the race.” (“A Plan for Peace,” by Margaret Sanger, published in Birth Control Review (BCR) April 1932, pp. 107-108)

Sanger was more than just a passive observer where eugenics was concerned; she was a member of the American Eugenics Society and even tried to unite her efforts and her publication with the eugenics movement.

This image below captures a letter entitled, “Shall the Birth Control Review be combined with a Eugenics Magazine?” written by Sanger.  It was published in the June 1928 edition of her Birth Control Review and it details her meeting (page 188) with American Eugenics Society representative, Leon Whitney, to merge her publication with that of the Eugenics Society. Whitney was the former Executive Secretary of the American Eugenics Society (AES) and Sanger published his writings in the Birth Control Review (BCR).

Of interest is that fact that, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was so influenced by Whitney that he sent him a letter complimenting him for a book he had written on sterilization.

Margaret Sanger to Merge ABCL with Eugenics

Sanger merge w eugenics

The New York Times recorded Sanger’s desire to unite with the eugenics movement as well, in an April 1, 1925, article:

Mrs. Margaret Sanger, founder of the American Birth Control League [ABCL], said that the league was ready to unite with the eugenic movement whenever the eugenists were able to present a definite program of standards for parenthood on a eugenic basis, rather than a eugenic ideal.

Another example where Sanger’s desire to unite with the eugenics movement can be seen is in this ABCL publication from 1935 (below), calling for a resolution that Sanger’s American Birth Control League (which later became Planned Parenthood), “unite with the American Eugenics Society.”

Sanger resolution to merge BCR with Eugenics

Sanger made certain that eugenics movers and shakers were deeply embedded in her organization, as Live Action News has previously documented. Below is a sample list of American Eugenics Society founders, leaders, and members who were a part of Margaret Sanger’s board or organizations:

In addition to Sanger’s connections, Live Action News has documented that many of Planned Parenthood’s officials were members or leaders of the American Eugenics Society. (See a partial list here.)

PP’s Margaret Sanger Award

Since the 1960’s, Planned Parenthood has granted its infamous Margaret Sanger Award (calling it their top award) to people who benefit the organization’s cause.

Probably the most well-known recipient of the Margaret Sanger award in more recent times is Hillary Clinton, who said during her acceptance of the award that she “admired Margaret Sanger.” Republicans called her out for her comments, and Clinton responded by making disparaging remarks about Thomas Jefferson instead of repudiating Sanger’s push to eradicate the “unfit.” In the video below, Clinton pays homage to Sanger:

In 2014, then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi accepted the Margaret Sanger award, despite Sanger’s clear support for a hideous eugenic philosophy and associations with the Klan. Pelosi referred to the largest abortion corporation in the nation as an “outstanding organization,” suggesting that Sanger’s philosophy paved the ideology behind Planned Parenthood: “Out of this philosophy and outlook emerged the spirit and driving force of what would become known as the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.” Pelosi added, “To be associated with the great Margaret Sanger is a distinct privilege.”

Nancy Pelosi gets award named after Klan speaker, Margaret Sanger founder of Planned Parenthood

In 2004, the founder of CNN, Ted Turner, received the Margaret Sanger Award. The “honor” was mentioned in Planned Parenthood’s 2004 annual report:

2004 Margaret Sanger award to CNN Founder Ted Turner

Today, Planned Parenthood will defend their founder by pointing to civil rights giants like Martin Luther King, Jr., who also received the Margaret Sanger award. But the full picture and agenda of Sanger and her Planned Parenthood organization were not obvious to many in the Black community at that time, including MLK.

However, despite the suspicious timing of the award to MLK, many Black leaders have since spoken against the birth control and family planning agenda of Planned Parenthood, even calling abortion a form of “black genocide.”

Given this information and much more, when will the media demand recipients of this hideous award return it to Planned Parenthood? And, even more important, when will Congress cut ties with Planned Parenthood and stop sending them half a billion in tax dollars every year?

Planned Parenthood founder, Margaret Sanger, was a member in good standing with the racist American Eugenics Society. Sanger had board members who were known for their racist writing and Sanger published many of those in her publications. In addition to her Birth Control advocacy, Margaret Sanger also pushed for euthanasia. (read here )

Sanger founded the American Birth Control League which later changed their name to Planned Parenthood in 1942. A documentary produced in 2009, Maafa21, detailed the racist and eugenics agenda of Margaret Sanger and even tied Planned Parenthood to racist eugenics boards. The film clearly showed that Sanger was NOT an honorable person but rather a biased racist who wanted to rid the world of those she deemed “defective”, “feebleminded” or “unfit.” Watch Maafa21 here for that history – http://www.maafa21.com.

Planned Parenthood award Pelosi

Pelosi Margaret Sanger Award- March 2014

Nancy Pelosi’s acceptance speech makes it clear that the elitist Congresswoman agrees with Margaret Sanger and her Planned Parenthood philosophy, “: I thank all of you for the honor of receiving the Margaret Sanger Award. ..To be associated with the great Margaret Sanger is a distinct privilege. To be associated with past winners of this Margaret Sanger award is among my highest honors. I accept this honor tonight on behalf of my colleagues…Over the years, the opponents of family planning have targeted Planned Parenthood for one reason, and one reason only: Planned Parenthood is effective… thank you for the Margaret Sanger Award,” Pelosi said as she accepted the award.

Pelosi is not the only high ranking political official to sing the praises of Margaret Sager:

Hillary clintonMargaret SangerApril of 2009: Congressman Jeff Fortenberry dialogues with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on foreign policy At 4 minutes 25 seconds into this video, Ms. Clinton compares the eugenics advocate and racist Margaret Sanger to Thomas Jefferson. Secretary Clinton even seems to say that Sanger is superior to Jefferson.

I guess it would be okay with Ms. Clinton if she praised a member of the KKK as long as they did something admirable in her eyes. Racism by Sanger and Her Cronies is NEVER acceptable to those who are the target of it. But a Wealthy White Elitist Woman like Hillary Clinton will never know that type of racism.

Hillary Clinton, ” I admire Margaret Sanger enormously, her courage, her tenacity, her vision,” said Hillary Rodham Clinton, “I am really in awe of her, there are a lot of lessons we can learn from her life”

Margaret Sanger once bragged that she gave a speech to the Klan. In her own autobiography, Sanger claimed she received a dozen invites from the KKK for her beliefs.

In all the times that the racism label has been thrown around I have to wonder why Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton’s acceptance of an award named after a Klan Speaker and Eugenicist has not been decried by Americans in general and Black leaders specifically.

Perhaps most don’t even know what they really believe; I hope we can change that.
