PPDE Wilmington SIGN

A Planned Parenthood facility in Wilmington is under fire following new accusations from three former employees.

Former manager Melody Meanor and former nurses Joyce Vasikonis and Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich spoke at a legislative hearing on Monday, claiming the Planned Parenthood clinic located on Shipley Street in Wilmington is unprofessional, under-trained and unsafe.

“Women are exposed to potential infection of any kind you can imagine that can be passed from one patient to another,” Vasikonis said.

PP DE 564507_501479036585800_403720624_nJoyce Vasikonis and Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich

During their testimony, the women claimed the privacy of patients was jeopardized, that they were asked to falsify employee records, that medical assistants were poorly trained and that certain women in need of certain medications after abortions often didn’t receive them. They also claimed that the facility failed to inform up to 200 women that they tested positive for gonorrhea and chlamydia, according to Delaware Online.

All three nurses insist that their motivation for testifying is not political. In fact, they say that they are pro-choice and believe in the national mission of Planned Parenthood. They also believe however that the Wilmington clinic is putting the lives of women at risk.

PPDE OSHA

OSHA previously issued several citations against the clinic and the State Health Department found violations during an inspection. However, the Department allowed the clinic to stay open, satisfied with its attempts to make things right. The former employees however, don’t believe the state is looking close enough.

“I believe that Planned Parenthood should be fined and closed until all dangers are addressed,” Werbrich said. “Again, I’m going to state, I am pro-choice.”

Planned Parenthood’s Houston-based affiliate clarified Tuesday that it settled for $4.3 million, three times the $1.4 million that Abbott reported a week ago.

The Houston Chronicle. has reported that Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast settled a whistle-blower lawsuit that alleged the Houston nonprofit engaged in fraudulent Medicaid billing for $4.3 million – nearly $3 million more than was announced last week by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.

The say that, in finalizing the settlement, which includes total state and federal recovery, the agency claimed the allegations that it submitted more than $30 million in fraudulent bills between 2003 and 2009 were “baseless.”

The lawsuit was brought by a former medical assistant in agency’s Lufkin clinic. The lawsuit alleged “defendant’s billing policies routinely instructed clinic staff to enter billing codes for certain services, regardless of whether patients’ charts recorded that such service was actually provided.”

Last week, Texas Attorney General’s, in announcing a $1.4 million settlement, said its investigation showed the agency charged for “services that were never actually rendered, not medically necessary and were not covered by the Medicaid program.”

Three pro-choice former employees of Planned Parenthood of Delaware become whistle-blowers against the organization. This event is a legislative hearing in Wilmington organized by State Senator Gregory Lavelle (R), and State Representative Gerald Brady (D).

Melody Meanor was a manager of family planning in Wilmington. Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich worked as a part time nurse. Joyce worked as a nurse but temporarily acted as a manager of surgical abortions.

Here is what the YouTube description says:

EricSchaff

Dr. Carole Meyers, currently an auditor for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, audited the local affiliate, Planned Parenthood of Delaware, in 2008. During her audit, she told Joyce that discovered that Dr. Eric Schaff, the then-Medical Director, was performing illegal after hours abortion at night after the support staff had already left.

Dr. Meyers told the Planned Parenthood of Delaware Board of Directors to fire Dr. Schaff because of the danger a patient might be killed during these late night abortions. However, she never notified the Board of Medicine or the police about the illegal behavior of Dr. Schaff. This is a violation of the statutory reporting obligations of Dr. Meyers.

Dr. Meyers ultimately was hired in 2011 as the Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of Delaware, taking the job of Dr. Schaff, who she had helped get fired in 2008. During this time, Dr. Meyers simultaneously served as the Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of Delaware and as an auditor for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. While Dr. Meyers was the Medical Director, Dr. Timothy Liveright served as the physicians in charge of performing abortions. Dr. Meyers was in charge of supervising Dr. Liveright.

Timothy Liveright Screen_Shot_2013-06-03_at_12.23.36_PM-240x171

Dr. Liveright had his license suspended in 2013 by Attorney General Beau Biden (D) for being “a clear and immediate danger to the Delaware public” because of numerous abuses of patients (hitting patients, doing abortions in less than eight minutes, lying patients on operating tables still wet from the blood of previous patients, playing peek-a-boo with patients, etc). While he was abusing patients, Dr. Meyers was supposed to supervise him and protect patients. However, most of her time was spent auditing other Planned Parenthood affiliates in an alleged attempt to ensure patient safety at those other Planned Parenthoods. Meanwhile, Dr. Liveright was “a clear and immediate danger to the public” in the clinic Dr. Meyers was supposed to manage.

All of the problems described in the video occurred under the watch of Dr. Carole Meyers. However, the state has thus far refused to suspend her license. She remains an auditor for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Planned Parenthood manager: staff poorly trained putting patients in “unnecessary danger”, mgrs had serious deficiencies

MONDAY 7/30/2013: Former Planned Parenthood manager Melody Meanor and two nurses said they will testify today at a legislative hearing in Wilmington that Planned Parenthood failed to inform as many as 200 women that they tested positive for gonorrhea and chlamydia, and failed to notify 87 women of results of their colposcopies.

Joyce Vasikonis and Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich are the former clinic nurses who earlier testified about unsafe and unsanitary conditions at Planned Parenthood’s Shipley Street clinic.

The three former employees also will discuss how Planned Parenthood placed patients in “grave danger” by relying on employees who had little or no medical credentials and “rushed through abortions at a speed that made patient safety unsustainable,” according to a news release announcing the hearing.

TUESDAY 7-30-2013

Concerns toward Planned Parenthood voiced at hearing: The Planned Parenthood of Delaware’s Wilmington clinic came under scrutiny early this year when several abortion protesters noticed an unusual number of ambulances called to the Shipley Street site. Former workers spoke at a hearing Tuesday. 7/30/13

H/T

A former manager at Planned Parenthood of Delaware’s Wilmington clinic spoke publicly for the first time today about problems she experienced at the troubled clinic, joining two former clinic nurses who complained to state officials last year.

MelodyMeanor2

Melody Meanor, who managed the clinic’s health center for three months in 2012, called for justice for women who were treated there by personnel whom she says were poorly trained, working in disorganized conditions and routinely skipping important elements of patient care.

She urged women treated there to seek outside medical attention to see if they had conditions that went unreported by clinicians at Planned Parenthood of Delaware, putting patients in “unnecessary danger.”

Meanor said entry-level health center assistants were poorly trained. She said two managers had serious management deficiencies. Untrained assistants were assigned duties they were not prepared to perform, Meanor said.

Meanor said she had done such training in Wyoming, where the clinic she worked in excelled in organization and operations.

She said during her brief tenure, she found scattered patient files and expired protocols. She saw no evidence of data collection, she said, and said the clinic was violating grant guidelines – borrowing against grants to cover payroll expenses.

No documents were offered to substantiate Meanor’s claims.

Clinic PP DE

Meanor repeated the nurses’ concerns that hundreds of women were never told that they tested positive for sexually transmitted diseases and others did not receive medication necessary to protect future pregnancies. She said she was directed to falsify records and alleged that a manager destroyed some records.

She rejected published statements by Planned Parenthood of Delaware CEO Ruth Lytle-Barnaby that the clinic’s operations had become a political issue and that two former nurses – Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich and Joyce Vasikonis – were doing the bidding of anti-abortion groups.

All three women say they are pro-choice and raising concerns only for the sake of patients and patient care.

“But I had to do some soul-searching,” Vasikonis said. “Some of these things brought me to my knees…. As a nurse, I had to do something about it.”

She said she is now a client of the Colorado-based Alliance Defending Freedom, that describes itself as a conservative Christian organization, advocating “religious liberty, the sanctity of life, and marriage and family.” Her attorney there, Michael Norton, has filed a complaint with the Delaware Board of Medical Licensure and Regulation, she said.

The clinic came under scrutiny early this year when several abortion protesters noticed an unusual number of ambulances called to the Shipley Street site. Five women required emergency care after procedures.

PP DE 564507_501479036585800_403720624_n

Mitchell-Werbrich and Vasikonis reported their concerns to the state in 2012, but state officials then said they could not substantiate the claims. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the clinic for several violations, though, and this year the clinic’s primary physician, Dr. Timothy Liveright, surrendered his license to practice medicine in Delaware after regulators pursued claims against him, calling him a “clear and immediate danger to the public” because of unprofessional, incompetent and negligent conduct. Liveright has denied the claims.

Mitchell-Werbrich and Vasikonis say “unsafe and unsanitary” clinic practices put women in “grave danger.”

Meanor said the clinic was cited and given “conditional” certification by the Planned Parenthood Federation, which knew of concerns related to unsafe, unsanitary conditions.

As a trained social worker, Meanor said she spent time with patients, explaining the seriousness of abortion and trying to ensure they understood the procedure, wanted to have it done, and were not being pressured by someone else.

“Many of these women are poor or minority women who had turned to Planned Parenthood of Delaware in their moment of need,” Meanor said.

Joyce Vasikonis

In an interview with Delaware Online, Planned Parenthood former employee, Joyce Vasikonis says that Planned Parenthood is arrogant and “they seem to believe that whatever they do no body can do anything about it.” She went on to say that there was no area in the Wilmington or the Dover Planned Parenthood office that ran like it was supposed to.

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden’s office also filed a complaint against Dr. Timothy Liveright, a doctor who performed abortions at the Wilmington clinic. The state accused Liveright of unprofessional, incompetent and negligent conduct and argued that he presents “a clear and immediate danger to the public.”
Liveright, who has surrendered his license to practice medicine in Delaware, has denied the state’s claims and said he was a “scapegoat” for the clinic.

Planned Parenthood nurses clinic was a NIGHTMARE – State more than a dozen “unsafe and unsanitary” practices

According to Delaware Online: Two former nurses at Planned Parenthood of Delaware told a packed Senate hearing room today the Wilmington clinic performed “meat-market style assembly line” abortions, focused most on profit margins, and put patients at risk for infection and other serious medical problems by neglecting proper standards of care.

Both nurses resigned their positions last year, and have urged state officials to address problems they say have been ignored or denied for months.

“It was an absolute nightmare,” said Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich, who resigned after only a few weeks on the job and pushed for state investigations for months.

Mitchell-Werbrich and her former supervisor, Joyce Vaskonis, both told lawmakers they were not opposed to abortion. They were opposed to unsafe medical practices.

“This is not about abortion,” Mitchell-Werbrich said. “This is about patients. Their lives are at risk.”

Sen. Greg Lavelle, R-Sharpley, said he was “shocked” to learn of “horrible patient care,” lack of response to the nurses’ concerns, and the state response to their complaints.

Sen. Robert Venables, who called the ad hoc hearing with Lavelle, said he hoped to resurrect legislation that would regulate the clinics more closely.

Just hours before the hearing, the Delaware Division of Public Health released results of its survey of Planned Parenthood’s Wilmington clinic on Shipley Street. The state cites more than a dozen “unsafe and unsanitary” practices and conditions there.

The review, triggered by emergencies experienced by women having abortions at the facility, found 14 kinds of violations at the clinic – including inadequate documentation of narcotics, supplies that had exceeded expiration dates, lax practices to ensure sterility, unlabeled bottles of fluid, overdue or uncertain maintenance records.

Delaware Planned Parenthood of Baltimore in Wilmington has announced that abortion procedures are on hold and a local news station has announced that the tax funded clinic is under investigation by the state after two staffers say the clinic was not sterile and unsafe. The story broke last night. At least five Planned Parenthood patients have been rushed to the ER. In addition, one doctor and two nurses have “mysteriously left” as well, according to reports.

According to the Planned Parenthood website, surgical abortions will be referred to “another provider” but chemical abortions will still be provided:

“They could be at risk of getting hepatitis, even AIDS,” added Vasikonis. Both of these nurses said, they quit to protect their own medical licenses, stunned by what they called a meat-market style of assembly-line abortions.

Vasikonis said, “I felt I could be held liable if a patient was harmed.”

Planned Parenthood needs to close its doors, it’s needs to be cleaned up, the staff needs to be trained, said Werbrich.”

According to the news station, Since January 4th, five patients allegedly have been rushed from the facility to the emergency room, again placing the clinic in the spotlight.

Pro-lifers have documented several of those incidents:

Planned Parenthood Delaware2013In February of 2013, a woman was taken by stretcher out the back of Planned Parenthood in Wilmington to a local emergency medical center following a botched abortion. She was loaded into a St. Francis Hospital ambulance, according to Rae Stabosz of Newark, Delaware…It was the third such event witnessed by pro-lifers in a two-year period.

Operation Rescue has published newly obtained 911 recordings of two medical emergencies at Planned Parenthood in Wilmington, Delaware, which took place on February 8, and 16, 2013.

In both cases, patients were transported to a local hospital with abortion complications that could not be managed by abortionists and nurses who attended the women at the clinic.

The 911 recordings were obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests made by a participant in a local 40 Days for Life campaign with the assistance of Operation Rescue. While prayer vigil participants were present for the incident on the 16th, they were unaware that another medical emergency had taken place at that same Planned Parenthood abortion clinic just 8 days earlier until they received the open records files.

“The 911 recordings are important because they expose the inconvenient truth that abortion isn’t as safe as the abortion cartel would have you believe,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue and Pro-Life Nation. “Women are maimed and killed by shoddy abortionists on a regular basis, but it is covered up by the clinics, the abortion lobby, and the media. Public records tear way the curtains of secrecy that enables abortionists to abuse women. This helps us warn the public and hold abortionists accountable for their actions.”

Patient 1 –February 8, 2013

February 8, 2013, Planned Parenthood called 911 at 1:30 p.m. to ask for assistance for a patient that was unconscious and struggling to breathe. Despite the presence of two physicians and three nurses, her condition still required emergency assistance from paramedics.

The caller indicated that they were using an emergency non rebreather on the patient, which is a mask with a flat bag that used in emergency situations to provide oxygen to the patient.

However, the non rebreather seemed inadequate, because the caller told the dispatcher that they were “getting ready to bag” the patient. “Bagging” a patient is done with a hand-held device used to provide positive pressure ventilation to a patient who is not breathing or who is breathing inadequately. It is an emergency resuscitative measure.

Paramedics and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene. The outcome of this patient’s medical emergency is unknown.

Patient 2 – February 16, 2013

A second medical emergency at Planned Parenthood in Wilmington, which was witnessed by pro-life activists, took place on February 16. Video was taken by Rae Stabosz during a 40 Days for Life prayer vigil that shows a woman on a gurney with a possible IV bag containing plasma or other blood products.

The partially-redacted 911 recording confirmed that the patient suffered heavy bleeding. The Planned Parenthood employee that placed the call opted for response by paramedics instead of a simple ambulance transfer, indicating that the patient needed emergency care.

She was rushed to St. Francis Hospital for emergency treatment.

These incidents comprise the third and fourth medical emergencies observed or documented by prayer vigil participants at Planned Parenthood in Wilmington over a two-year period.

“We wonder – how often does it happen when we are not there?” asked Stabosz.

PlannedParenthoodWilmingtonAmbulanceMarch 13 2013 In March of 2013 a woman told protesters her daughter was bleeding from an incomplete abortion which Planned Parenthood had performed on her days earlier was taken to the emergency room. Then, at approximately 1:00PM witnesses documented an ambulance arriving at the same Planned Parenthood, and removing another patient.

Proabort Attack March 2013Pro-Abort Woman Attacks

According to Operation Rescue, A 63-year old Catholic grandmother of 12 was violently attacked outside this Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Wilmington, Delaware, as she filmed the fourth abortion injury there in less than five weeks.

According to reports, Rae Stabosz had been praying outside the Planned Parenthood clinic when a woman and her mother came to the clinic. Rae learned that the woman was suffering complications to an abortion she received on March 8. Rae persuaded them to go to St. Francis hospital where it was discovered that aborted baby body parts, including a leg and foot, had been left behind by the abortionist. The woman required additional surgery and was referred to legal counsel.

Rae left Planned Parenthood to attend mass, and when she returned to the Planned Parenthood, she was shocked to see that yet another medical emergency was in progress. As she was filming the incident with her cell phone, a young woman came out of the Planned Parenthood clinic and violently attacked Rae, knocking her down and taking away her phone.

Proabort2

The attacker took Rae’s phone inside the clinic and gave it to a Planned Parenthood worker. Rae immediately ran into the clinic, retrieved her phone, then returned to the street where she continued to film the gurney with the injured patient, covered head to toe in blankets and sheets, being loaded into the ambulance.

The police soon arrived and Rae made a police report, but the attacker has fled the scene. At this writing, she remained at large.

Rae began to feel the effects of the attack, and another ambulance was summoned to transport her to the same hospital where the two Planned Parenthood patients were receiving treatment. Rae was treated and released with minor injuries.

Action News has learned during our investigation that one doctor and two more nurses at the clinic have mysteriously left.
