Does abortion reduce welfare costs?

November 27, 2012 (HLIWorldWatch.org) – Supporters of the Culture of Death tend to lack foresight, and do not seem to possess even a rudimentary understanding of human nature. These defects inevitably lead to many cases of the “law of unintended consequences.”1

One good example of this principle is the ongoing effort by population control groups to flood Africa with condoms in an attempt to stem the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Condom manufacturers refuse to publicize their high failure rate, however, and so African nations where more condoms are used have much higher rates of HIV/AIDS than those nations whose people widely reject their use.2

Another example of this lack of foresight is the claim that, when the State pays for a poor woman’s abortion, it saves a lot of money by avoiding the costs of a delivery and another child added to the welfare system. In fact, this is one of the most persuasive arguments offered by pro abortionists in support of Medicaid funding of abortion.

In support of this belief, pro-abortionists grossly exaggerate the costs incurred by a child on welfare. They began using this tactic in their battle against the Hyde Amendment, which banned most federal funding of abortion. Senator Charles H. Percy (R Ill.) testified, “If we can avoid a $100,000 cost for a $200 [abortion] investment ― and make a humanitarian investment at the same time ― what sense does it make to say, `We cannot afford $200 for this expenditure [for an abortion]?’”3

Leaders of the pro-abortion movement sometimes accidentally reveal the naked racism behind these comments. Notorious California abortionist Edward Allred said, “When a sullen Black woman of 17 or 18 can decide to have a baby and get welfare and food stamps and become a burden to all of us, it’s time to stop. In parts of South Los Angeles, having babies for welfare is the only industry these people have.”4

Of course none of this is new, and abortion is not the only weapon targeting poor women in the United States in the name of cost-cutting. Donald Kimelman of the Philadelphia Inquirer revealed the true goal of our domestic population controllers in a 1990 article ominously entitled “Poverty and Norplant: Can Contraception Reduce the Underclass?” He wrote:

As we read these two stories [about Norplant and Black poverty], we asked ourselves: Dare we mention them in the same breath? To do so might be considered deplorably insensitive, perhaps raising the specter of eugenics. But it would be worse to avoid drawing the logical conclusion that foolproof contraception could be invaluable in breaking the cycle of inner city poverty ― one of America’s greatest challenges.

Kimelman went on to suggest that welfare mothers could be implanted with Norplant for free and perhaps receive increased welfare benefits as a reward.5 And speaking of unintended consequences, Norplant was later banned by the FDA for the harm it caused women, resulting in a massive class action lawsuit against Norplant’s producer.
It seems reasonable to ask why, if Kimelman was truly concerned about poverty in general, did he not also recommend the use of Norplant for poor White women?

Others asked this same question. Vanessa Williams, president of the Philadelphia chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, called Kimelman’s article, “A tacit endorsement of slow genocide.”6 Four days after Kimelman’s article, Inquirer columnist Steve Lopez sarcastically suggested that contraception would not reduce the underclass quite as fast as “just shooting them.” The Inquirer quickly apologized for Kimelman’s article after a wave of complaints. But the racist and eugenicist thinking of many of those who want to “help” poor women had been exposed once again.

Abortion As Human Culling

Kimelman was not the only journalist to step on his tongue after the introduction of Norplant. Anthony Bouza, former Minneapolis Police Chief and columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, wrote an editorial with the oxymoronic title “A Mother’s Day Wish: Make Abortion Available to All Women.”

He described the “at risk” population as “poor, Black and Indian,” and said that their offspring are “marked for failure.” He went on to say:

When abortions are illegal, poor women deliver and keep their babies. Then they plunk them in front of a TV set, watch them get abused and conditioned to violence by parades of males, and expose them to all the factors the criminologists describe as the precursors to a life of crime … Making abortions freely available to the impoverished young women who produce our criminals is very likely the most important crime prevention measure adopted in this country in the last 25 years.7

If Bouza’s allegation is true ― that abortion is our “most important crime prevention measure” ― why are 7.2 million adults in prison or on parole or probation, 3.1 percent of all adults in the entire population?8 This is a fourfold increase since the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, when only 0.8 percent of all adults in the United States were subject to the criminal justice system. If abortion is so effective at fighting crime, why does the United States possess the dubious distinction of having the largest percentage of its population imprisoned among all the countries of the world, including the former Soviet Union, Cuba, and South Africa?

Don’t expect answers to these questions from abortion advocates ― especially pro abortion journalists. They have a very big axe to grind, and nobody had better bother them with the facts.

Taking the Long View

Obviously, an abortion does indeed cost much less than delivery and care for a baby, but as always, the pro-abortion view is extremely short-sighted and completely neglects the future benefits to society provided by a child over his or her lifetime.

To begin with, pro-abortionists invariably assume that welfare children will be “on the dole” until they are eighteen. However, less than five percent of all children born into welfare families will remain on welfare until they are adults. In fact, the average period of welfare dependency for a child is just two years.9

A first-trimester Medicaid abortion currently costs about $515.10 By comparison, the cost of all kinds of public assistance for a child, including prenatal care, delivery and postnatal care, and two years of all types of public assistance for the child is about $22,300.11 So, at first glance, abortion seems to be a very good financial deal indeed for the long-suffering taxpayer.

But hold it ― not so fast. What about the future benefits that a child generates during his or her lifetime?

The Federal, state and local taxes paid by a child and his or her employers during 30 years in the work force amount to about $955,900.12

Pro-abortionists consider only the short-term benefits to the State, which is the difference between the cost of caring for a child and the cost of an abortion, which is ($22,300 – $515), or $21,785; but the long-term benefit to the State of paying for the child’s delivery and care is ($955,900 – $22,300), or $933,600. In other words, the State pays on average $22,300 and gets $955,900 back, a benefit-cost ratio of 43.8 dollars received for every one dollar spent, which is a very good deal indeed.

But this is not the only part of the equation. We must also consider that each person continuously generates wealth during his working career and consumes goods and services that help support the livelihoods of many other people. At current levels, this sum amounts to an average of about $2,764,000 per person.13

Therefore, we see that every person aborted costs society at large a total of about $3,720,000. So, for every single dollar spent on a Medicaid-funded abortion, society loses ($3,720,000/$515) = more than $7,200.

Does anyone other than hardcore abortion advocates think that this is a fiscally sensible or responsible position to take?.

1 This term originated when the occupying British government became concerned about the proliferation of venomous cobras in Indian urban areas. The government offered a reward for every dead snake brought in, and people began breeding the cobras for extra income. When the British learned of this practice, they discontinued the reward. The breeders then released their thousands of cobras, resulting in the problem being much worse than it was before.

Door smashed, cans of black paint thrown into pro-life office

The Vienna offices of Human Life International (HLI) were attacked and damaged during the recent World Prayer Congress for Life held in the Austrian capital, which HLI organized.

Wolfram Schrems of HLI Austria said organizers were forewarned that pro-abortion activists might resort to violent counter-demonstrations during the Congress.

“On the Internet, fierce demonstrations and even criminal actions were planned against the congress,” Schrems told LifeSiteNews. “Posters announcing demonstrations contained offensive and martial images.”

One of the posters showed a masked woman with a weapon pointed at the target “Vatican.”

A video of the vandalism by Gloria TV, the Swiss-based Catholic internet video and news service, shows that the double-glass entrance door of HLI’s office was destroyed and jars filled with black paint were thrown into the office.

Black paint covered a computer, some office furniture and the floor of the office.

One of the jars apparently didn’t break and was taken as evidence by investigating police officers.

Western powers pouring millions to keep Africa’s children from being born

International Pro-Life Expert: ‘Stop This Attack on the Heart of Kenya!’

FRONT ROYAL, Va., April 7 /Christian Newswire/ — Joseph Meaney, Director of International Coordination for Human Life International, protested the violation of Kenya’s constitution and traditional values by the Kenyan Parliament and large international pro-abortion organizations.

“Kenyans are pro-life! Their traditional love for life is in their constitution, which only reflects what is in their hearts and institutions,” said Meaney. “When we see the new articles added to the constitution and approved by parliament under heavy pressure from Western elites, we are seeing an assault on the very heart of the Kenyan people.”

Although the Kenyan constitution has long had language defending the life of the unborn from conception, new language has been added and approved by the Kenyan Parliament which would effectively override any pro-life provision, opening the door to legalized abortion. Before the revised constitution can come into force, it must be approved by popular vote, which is expected to occur in July of this year.

“Perhaps the greatest insult is that this attack is happening under the banner of ‘improving women’s health’. The only ones who believe that killing an unborn child is good for a woman’s health are those who will profit from the slaughter, Western powers who are pouring untold millions of dollars into measures to keep Africa’s children from being born,” said Meaney. “This is nothing but population control, an imperialist assault intended to rob Africa of its future by eliminating her children. It is a disgrace.

Meaney called on Kenya’s civic and religious leaders to wake up to the urgency of the matter, imploring that they reach out to all Kenyans ahead of the referendum, and lead them in demanding that human life be protected from the point of conception in Kenya’s constitution.

Margaret Sanger , founder of the largest national and international abortion providers, Planned Parenthood, was an avowed racist who admitted she gave speeches to the racist Klan. Many members of Planned Parenthood and the Eugenics Societies promoted abortion in teh US and in 3rd world nations- especially African nations.

Johnson had to say< LBJ Faces up a Crisis: Johnson also stated, “Nations with food deficits must put more of their resources into voluntary family planning programs.” ( SOURCE: Lewiston Evening Journal – Feb 2, 1967 , from Johnson’s 1967 State of the Union Address )

On December 10, 1974, the United States National Security Council promulgated National Security Study Memorandum 200 (NSSM-200), also called The Kissinger Report. This document explicitly laid out a detailed strategy by which the United States would aggressively promote population control in developing nations in order to regulate (or have better access to) the natural resources of these countries.

In order to protect U.S. commercial interests, NSSM-200 cited a number of factors that could interrupt the smooth flow of materials from lesser-developed countries, LDCs as it called them, to the United States, including a large population of anti-imperialist youth, who must, according to NSSM-200, be limited by population control. The document identified 13 nations by name that would be primary targets of U.S.-funded population control efforts.

According to NSSM-200, elements of the implementation of population control programs could include: a) the legalization of abortion; b) financial incentives for countries to increase their abortion, sterilization and contraception-use rates; c) indoctrination of children; and d) mandatory population control, and coercion of other forms, such as withholding disaster and food aid unless an LDC implements population control programs.

While the CIA and Departments of State and Defense have issued hundreds of papers on population control and national security, the U.S. government has never renounced NSSM-200, but has only amended certain portions of its policy. NSSM-200, therefore, remains the foundational document on population control issued by the United States government.

Guttmacher Institute is the Research Arm for the largest provider of abortions nationally and internationally – Planned Parenthood and was named after one of Planned Parenthood’s President – Alan Guttmacher. Alan Guttmacher , who was also a Vice President for the American Eugenics Society, said this in 1967- “ I oppose abortion on demand, at least now for the United States, there are several reason. First, the public does not want it… only 20 % of the public favors abortion for single women… Abortion on demand relives the male of all responsibility in the sphere of pregnancy control..he becomes and animal…not far removed from the status of a bull…I favor liberalization of existing [ abortion] statutes…” But…should Guttmacher be legally permitted to do abortions he continues, ” I would abort mothers already carrying three or more children…I would abort women who desire abortion who are drug addicts or severe alcoholics…I would abort women with sub-normal mentality incapable of providing satisfactory parental care…”
(Source; “Abortion: The Issues”, Dr. Alan Guttmacher – President, Planned Parenthood, December 4, 1967, Harvard Law School Forum)

In 1969, Guttmacher as then President of Planned Parenthood-World Population, said this: “ I would like to give our voluntary means of population control full opportunity in the next 10 to 12 years. Then , if these don’t succeed, we may have to go into some kind of coercion, not worldwide, but possibly in such places as India, Pakistan, and Indonesia, where pressures are the greatest…There is no question that birth rates can be reduced all over the world if legal abortion is introduced…” ( SOURCE: Family Planning: The needa and the Methods, by: Alan F. Guttmacher; The American Journal of Nursing, Vol. 69, No. 6. (June, 1969) PP. 1229-1234)

And in February of 1970 Alan Guttmacher was interviewed by the Baltimore Magazine and said this
Our birth rate has come down since we last talked.. I think we’ve hit a plateau- the figure’s not likely to drop much more unless there is more legal abortion. , or abortion on request as we call it…My own feeling is that we’ve got to pull out all the stops and involve the United Nations…If you’re going to curb population, it’s extremely important not to have it done by the dammed Yankees, but by the UN. Because the thing is, then it’s not considered genocide. If the United States goes to the Black man or the yellow man and says slow down your reproduction rate, we’re immediately suspected of having ulterior motives to keep the white man dominant in the world. If you can send in a colorful UN force, you’ve got much better leverage.”

This is about POPULATION CONTROL – Increasing abortions in African nations is part of the NSSM200 plan.

Simply listen to the words of Guttmacher told a symposium at the University of California Medical Center in 1966 he stated that, “the belief that the white middle class was coercing their own poor and people with black and yellow skins to reduce family size because the middle-class whites are frightened of being outnumbered.”

The only way the mounting feeling that birth control is a tool of racism can be handled, is to involve knowledgeable leaders from the minority groups who understand and are favorable to the philosophy of birth control. They, in turn, must translate their appreciation of the contribution which birth control can make toward family stability to their own people.” (SOURCE: New York Times: Doctor blames his profession for delays on Family Planning: 1/16/1966)

‘Senate Wannabee’ Martha Coakley to pro-life Catholics , “You probably shouldn’t work in the emergency room.”

Martha Coakley was on with Ken Pittman from WBSM in Massachusetts on Thursday. She told Ken that if you object to abortion then “You probably shouldn’t work in the emergency room.”

Ken Pittman: Right, if you are a Catholic, and believe what the Pope teaches that any form of birth control is a sin. ah you don’t want to do that.

Martha Coakley: No we have a separation of church and state Ken, lets be clear.

Ken Pittman: In the emergency room you still have your religious freedom.

Martha Coakley: (……uh, eh…um..) The law says that people are allowed to have that. You can have religious freedom but you probably shouldn’t work in the emergency room.

FRONT ROYAL, VA, Jan. 15 /Christian Newswire/ — “Thank you, Martha Coakley!” said Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of Human Life International, upon hearing the Massachusetts Attorney General and Democratic US Senate Candidate’s frank admission that the health care reform legislation being debated in the US Congress will have no protection for those who refuse to cooperate in anti-life medical procedures.

The Washington Times reported today that Coakley’s gaffe came in response to a radio host’s statement about freedom of religion for Catholics who work in emergency rooms and who actually pay attention to Church teaching on life issues. Coakley’s response was, “The law says that people are allowed to have that [freedom of religion]. You can have religious freedom but you probably shouldn’t work in the emergency room.”

Anyone who respects life and freedom must abhor Coakley’s disregard for these basic human rights, as well as her cynicism,” said Rev. Euteneuer. “But we must be grateful when truth is revealed, when a gaffe shows the heart of those who champion this life- destructive agenda and flies in the face of their false assurances that conscience rights will be defended in the new legislation.”

“These congressional cowards are hiding behind closed doors, afraid to show the American people how abhorrent this legislation really is. Not only is there no protection for conscience rights, there is NO protection for unborn human beings, NO guarantee of protection for the elderly and severely disabled whose lives will be deemed too inconvenient for the rest of us to continue to pay for,” said Rev. Euteneuer.

How can any Catholic still defend this anti-democratic and anti-life legislation? What more could those who actually know what it contains do to prove that they have no regard for freedom, transparency, honesty, life or even good faith?” said Rev. Euteneuer. “Catholics should unite against this destructive bill, and insist on real health care reform that actually protects life and conscience rights, and does so without destroying the livelihoods of this nation’s citizens.

Vicious, Venal and Violent Reaction to pro-life activist Jim Pouillon’s Killing

[Editor’s Note: the following is a letter from Father Thomas Eutenerer, president of Human Life International, sent out on September 14.]

This is really the only title that adequately describes the murderous movement known as “pro-choice” or “pro-abortion.” It is now frightening, thought not at all surprising, how absolutely hardened and inhumane our culture has become because of this satanic force that has grown strong through 36 years of wholesale murder of God’s precious innocents. The pro-choice movement has made murder just a casual pastime now, part of the general round of things that the news reports routinely. Yet, how surprised should we be at this when we stand back and see the unclean spirit that is behind the movement whose sole motivation is death? The fruits of this movement are universally demonic: a callous disregard for the sanctity of life, the insane promotion of death through lies, distortions and hate-filled propaganda. The nastiness of this movement is no longer able to be contained.

If this were not evident prior to last Friday, then the killing of pro-life activist Jim Pouillon in Michigan on the eighth anniversary of 9-11 should make it clear. Literally every major pro-life organization condemned in categorical terms the killing of abortionist George Tiller immediately as it happened this summer, but we are still waiting to hear an outright condemnation of Pouillon’s murder from Planned Parenthood or the National Organization for Women and other organizations that profit from and justify baby-killing. NARAL issued a pathetic “condemnation” which refused to recognize the anti-life motivation for this killing. After all, lies and killing are the business of these organizations: at six weeks, sixteen weeks or sixty-two years in Jim’s case, they have no regard for the protection of the innocent if it does not support their anti-life agenda.

The summit of viciousness had to come, however, from the media, the propaganda mouthpiece for the killing industry. A local paper, the Flint Journal, published within 24 hours the entire legal record of the victim, including dismissed misdemeanors and traffic violations. Outside of the fact that this man was arrested and penalized numerous times precisely for his pro-life activism, have we ever heard of such a diabolic mockery of an innocent man’s death? As far as I am concerned, Jim Pouillon will be granted a chance to stand up and testify against the editors of the Flint Journal on the day of their judgment. He will convict them of every vicious word. Woe to those journalists of iniquity! Their names will be blotted out of the Book of Life because they are sadistic enemies of life.

The evidence of pro-abortion viciousness is all around us for those who have eyes to see. HLI has documented thousands of cases of abortion violence and published the information on a special website (www.abortionviolence.com). It should convince any reader that the pro-death movement is the most violent and hateful social movement ever known to man, without exception.

Don’t forget the social impact of decades of “pro-choice” rhetoric either. If you think it has not had any effect on our youth culture, take a look at a smattering of the comments that appeared the day of the shooting on the NBC 25 (Mid-Michigan) news comment section. The few that I have published below show only a fraction of the hate. That is all I have the stomach to write today. We will pray for the dear pro-life martyr, Jim Pouillon, who literally gave his life for babies; but more than anything, let us pray for these vicious enemies of life who will have a great deal to answer for when they are judged by a more severe force of Justice than the internet.

Some of the comments on the murder of James Pouillon received by NBC-25 Mid-Michigan News

• One way to stop these nuts
• Maybe the rest of these anti abortion nut-jobs will get a hint that people don’t want to see these signs.
• I’m glad this kook is gone.
• Oh well
• Just consider it a retroactive abortion on another right wing whack job. No great loss. (This one was posted by a man calling himself Dave Devilish…)
• kooks
• I’ve never seen this man before, but I’ve seen others like him. The signs are so offensive that the issue becomes about the sign instead of being about abortion. He hurts the pro-life cause and I’m glad that he’s gone.
• Good!
• One less Democracy-hating fundie terrorist to put up with. Did they think Americans would just allow them to go around stalking & murdering people and not face the backlash? He was harassing schoolchildren, and he got what was coming to him.
• Pro-life = Anti-abortion
• Since most “pro-lifers” I’ve spoken with are in favor of capital punishment, one can’t help but marvel at their hypocrisy.
• Religion is poison-a late-stage cancer in our world.

Pro-Lifers Receiving Death Threats

Posted in pro-choice, pro-choice violence, Pro-Life, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on June 22, 2009 by saynsumthn

The Wichita Eagle ran a front-page story about threats of violence against Operation Rescue and other pro-life groups.

Abortion opponents receive death threats By Tim Potter,
The Wichita Eagle June 19, 2009
Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, says the number of threats has increased since the slaying of George Tiller. Three Wichita-based anti-abortion groups say they have received death threats in response to last month’s killing of George Tiller. For years, Operation Rescue has received threats, but the number increased markedly after Tiller’s killing, the group’s president, Troy Newman, said Thursday. Some of the threats have been aimed at anti-abortion activities planned in Wichita this weekend, Newman said. Soon after Tiller’s shooting, police contacted four to five local anti-abortion groups, asking them to contact authorities if they received threats, said Wichita police Capt. Brent Allred.

Allred said police would investigate threats on either side of the abortion issue. “That’s our job… to take a fair and impartial role on this,” he said. For this weekend’s events, off-duty officers have been hired to help provide security, Newman said. It wasn’t clear Thursday whether on-duty officers will be used. The activities will include a prayer vigil Saturday near Tiller’s clinic on East Kellogg. One e-mail referring to this weekend’s activities said there would be “vengeance,” Newman said. Newman said he has received other troubling messages since the shooting. In one, a man said, “You’re dead, punk….” In another, a woman threatened Newman and his family. Newman said he has reported some of the threats to police and that he is taking security measures. “You’re aware of your surroundings, no matter where you are,” he said.

‘Emotions are… high’ Around the nation, anti-abortion leaders have been taking precautions before and after the shooting, said the Rev. Patrick Mahoney, director of the Washington, D.C.-based Christian Defense Coalition. “I don’t want to go into detail, but I know for a fact that numerous pro-life leaders travel with bulletproof vests,” Mahoney said. Wichita is now at the “epicenter” of the fallout over Tiller’s death, he said. A gunman shot Tiller as he was serving as an usher May 31 at his church near Rock Road and 13th Street. “Emotions are running very high in Wichita,” said Mahoney, who said he plans to be at the anti-abortion activities here this weekend. Within hours of the May 31 shooting, Newman said, Allred called to say that authorities were concerned that someone could seek retaliation for Tiller’s death by attacking anti-abortion leaders.

Although abortion opponents have widely condemned the shooting, some of them have been accused of encouraging the attack on Tiller by vocal, often bitter, opposition to doctors performing abortions. Tiller was one of the few doctors nationally providing late-term abortions. Scott Roeder, a 51-year-old who has lived around the Kansas City area and has protested at abortion clinics, has been charged with first-degree murder in Tiller’s death. Mahoney, the Christian Defense Coalition leader, said he has received about 50 death threats over the years but didn’t receive what he would consider a direct death threat after the Tiller shooting – although one man called to say, “You better watch yourself.”

Abortion is an emotional, controversial subject on both sides of the issue, and when you have that kind of emotion… on the fringes of both sides of the divide you’re going to have people who lash out,” he said. Other threats Just a few hours after the Tiller shooting, Mary Wilkinson was answering phones at the Wichita office of the anti-abortion group Kansans for Life when she got a call that stunned and scared her, she said. “This person was out of control, emotionally, you could just tell” – speaking in a loud, angry tone about Tiller’s killing, she said. She said she wanted to tell him, “We did not have anything to do with this…. That’s not what this organization is about. We were horrified about it and sad about it. Killing is never the answer.” But the person – it sounded like a man, but she wasn’t sure – wouldn’t let her “get a word in edgewise,” she said. “I hope you’re happy,” the person said. “You’ve killed him. Now I hope somebody comes and kills you all.”

The call prompted David Gittrich, the group’s state development director, to call police and report the threat. At the office, the staff waited for an officer to arrive before they left. “Because of that threat, we decided it was time to go home,” Gittrich said. Wilkinson said she feels optimistic now. “I think things are settling down now,” she said. “I just think the community needs some healing time.” A third Wichita-based anti-abortion group, the Kansas Coalition for Life, also has received threats, said the group’s president, Mark Gietzen. Gietzen said he received three serious threats since the shooting, two of which were “bad enough that I called police,” he said. One person left a text message a few hours after the shooting. The message: “One of you is going to die for what you did to Tiller.”

In another story

Fr. Tom Euteneuer, of Human Life International, describes what he and his organization have encountered.

Question: As an outspoken visible pro-life advocate, you work against the goals of pro-abortion politics and the abortion industry.  In what ways have you been threatened, either written or verbally, with physical harm?

Fr. Euteneuer: In the days when I was more actively doing sidewalk counseling, I was threatened with death twice by abortion clinic workers, threatened with physical harm numerous times by boyfriends and others who accompanied women to the clinic and several times I was assaulted by people in vehicles trying to run me over. The verbal harassment is too numerous and gross to recount, especially when directed against a man of the cloth.

Question:
What forms of harassment have you encountered in your work and travels, and which
groups or organizations seem to be sources of intimidation?

Fr. Euteneuer: There has been less harassment in my work with HLI given that I remain mostly in pro-life circles and focus on training and motivating. The anti-lifers are usually in their comfortable air-conditioned offices plotting the destruction of more children and do not harass us too much both because they are cowards and because they don’t need to have direct contact with us.

Several members of our international network who have direct contact with the abortion lobby in their countries do encounter problems however:

  1. In Kenya an abortionist tried to poison our director;
  2. in Mexico, the HLI director found a knife covered with red blood-like liquid stuck in his couch with a message to stay out of abortion;
  3. in Austria the anti-lifers have sued our affiliate (without success) and the city government of Vienna created special laws against them;
  4. in the Philippines there are attacks against the character of our pro-life people and one parliamentarian called for the deportation of HLI’s Dr. Brian Clowes when he did a speaking tour there;
  5. in Ecuador our affiliate leader was threatened with death, satanic graffiti was put on the door of a church against us,  the severed head of a dog was thrown into a church with a desecrated Sacred Host in its mouth.

Question: What specific security steps must you take in order to protect yourself from these attacks?

Fr. Euteneuer: Prayer.

Question:
In addition, have you learned of threats or violence to people close to you or in your family?

Fr. Euteneuer: There has only been intimidation of family members like my father who stands in front of the local Planned Parenthood.  It is regular fare: he has insults hurled at him and bottles thrown from cars.

Question:
How have these instances of intimidation and violence changed over the years?

Fr. Euteneuer: The violence and intimidation seems to change as political fortunes change: it tends to go from personal to institutional. For example, during the Clinton years the FACE Act was passed to shut down Operation Rescue-type protests; we can expect the same and worse in the Obama Administration. The physical assaults and intimidations will likely get worse also as the forces of death are emboldened by radical laws and policies.

Question:
Have threats, intimidation or violent harassment ever come in an open or official capacity?

Fr. Euteneuer: HLI was denied official status at the UN in the late ‘90s due to its strong stance on the life issues. The only other example that I can think of in my case is when the Minister of Health in Zimbabwe officially vetoed my talk to a nursing school in Harare. The incident of Dr. Brian Clowes in the Philippines mentioned above is another example. Other than open criticism in the media, we are more of a grass-roots training and educational organization and under the radar screen of most governments.

Question:
Finally, has there been an increase in irrational behavior including threats and violence?

Fr. Euteneuer: The behaviors have always been irrational, but the new element seems to be an occult element that I believe we will see more in the future. “Death-scorts” seem to be more prone to curse and “pray” against pro-lifers probably due to so many of them being involved in New Age and witchcraft. Some of it is overt and some not. The abortion clinic owner in Rockford, IL periodically comes out of his place dressed in a devil outfit, for example. He also puts blasphemous images of Jesus and religion in the window of the clinic. One abortionist in FL some years ago shook blood from his abortion instruments on the pro-lifers after a morning of killing. We will see much more of this in time.
