The media’s glaring failure to report pro-abortion violence

violence, abuse

Violence against pro-life groups and individuals has been underreported by mainstream media outlets even though it occurs on a fairly regular basis and has for decades. While pro-life activists and organizations have received their share of threats (phone calls, mail, personal threats, online, etc.), more serious attacks of vandalism and even violent assault take place against pro-lifers with little mention in the press.

The false painting of pro-life groups as hateful and violent even led to a deranged gunman seeking to shoot staff at the pro-life Family Research Council. In 2009, Harlan Drake shot and murdered pro-life activist James Pouillon, while Pouillon displayed images of babies outside a Michigan school. Recently a man was indicted on federal charges after threatening to kill or rape members of Operation Rescue. Other threats to pro-lifers involving guns — including one by an abortionist — have thus far ended peacefully.

Live Action News previously documented an act of arson committed against Janet Folger Porter, who wrote about the incident in her book, True to Life, where she published this image of her car which was burned:

The abortion lobby, with the help of complicit pro-abortion media has portrayed pro-lifers as “violent” with regularity. The effort is led by the National Abortion Federation (NAF), which collects alleged “violence and disruption” claims from abortion providers and publishes them annually. While there are serious incidents listed, the report lacks evidence that every alleged act is being committed by pro-life advocates and not a disgruntled employee, angry family member, or random criminal. In addition, NAF pads the numbers by including incidents of non-violent civil disobedience and protest.

Unfortunately, while pro-life groups focus on rescuing babies and helping their mothers, to my knowledge, there is not currently a national system to report pro-abortion violence. However violence has been documented by Live Action News and other groups.

Brian Clowes at Human Life International collected data on pro-choice violence for many years. According to a report from Life News, Clowes published 1,200 pages of descriptions and documentation. The research, no longer published online, tracked violence committed by abortion providers (some in prison for murder), by pro-choice men who assaulted or murdered girlfriends for refusing to submit to abortion, and by pro-choice supporters who attacked pro-life sidewalk counselors.

“If people truly understood how backwards the media narrative is regarding the supposed intolerance and violence of pro-lifers, compared to that of ‘pro-choicers,’ we would be having a very different conversation about abortion in our nation today,” Clowes once told the Susan B. Anthony List.

The pro-life group Life Dynamics recently issued a report that shows abortion providers have been sexually assaulting and raping their clients for years. “In my 1996 book, Lime 5, I referenced more than 30 documented criminal cases in which abortion clinic doctors had been charged with raping or sexually assaulting their patients. In just these few cases, several hundred women were known to have been victimized,” president Mark Crutcher noted. There are also many other reported cases.

Life Dynamics also tracked incidents of forced abortion, and when the pro-life group created a tool called a “force form” to help protect women and thwart coercion, they claimed abortion advocates condemned it. Life Dynamics wrote:

Of course, the abortion industry has known for years that forced abortions are a problem – there have even been discussions about it at National Abortion Federation conferences. The discussions at these meetings reveal that the same people who advocate for “choice” to the media, politicians, and the country – [have] a stance of “convenient indifference” when it comes to women being forced to get abortions. They acknowledge its existence and talk about it in disapproving tones, while making it clear that they feel no obligation to let it influence the way they deal with these women.

In the interest of full disclosure, I conducted research for Life Dynamics’ “Under the Radar” report documenting how women who refuse to submit to abortion are attacked or assaulted. As the report details, the media is quite silent about this form of abortion-related violence:

[W]hen we were able to obtain copies of police reports, indictments, court records or other similar documentation for these cases, they would almost universally show that when a perpetrator is confronted by an unwanted pregnancy, his first response is not violence but a demand that his partner have an abortion. When violence ensues, it is inevitably a reaction to her refusal to comply.

However, the media’s coverage of these incidents often contains no mention of abortion. Instead, they either portray women who are attacked for refusing to have abortions as women who are attacked for getting pregnant, or they characterize the incident as one of simple “domestic violence” in which the victim’s pregnancy is basically inconsequential.

While the media touts pro-abortion violence statistics, consistently left out is the fact that women are injured and even killed by the abortion industry — Laura Hope Smith, and like Planned Parenthood patients Cree-Erwin and Tonya Reaves. I attended the funeral of Carolina Gutierrez and previously detailed how her agonizing death following her legal abortion took weeks. The infection was so horrific, she developed gangrene, enduring amputations prior to her death.

As we move closer to fully abolishing abortion in the United States, violence against pro-lifers is expected to intensify. But, despite the dangers, every pro-life activist and organization understands that the act of abortion itself is the most heinous form of violence on innocent preborn babies.

Door smashed, cans of black paint thrown into pro-life office

The Vienna offices of Human Life International (HLI) were attacked and damaged during the recent World Prayer Congress for Life held in the Austrian capital, which HLI organized.

Wolfram Schrems of HLI Austria said organizers were forewarned that pro-abortion activists might resort to violent counter-demonstrations during the Congress.

“On the Internet, fierce demonstrations and even criminal actions were planned against the congress,” Schrems told LifeSiteNews. “Posters announcing demonstrations contained offensive and martial images.”

One of the posters showed a masked woman with a weapon pointed at the target “Vatican.”

A video of the vandalism by Gloria TV, the Swiss-based Catholic internet video and news service, shows that the double-glass entrance door of HLI’s office was destroyed and jars filled with black paint were thrown into the office.

Black paint covered a computer, some office furniture and the floor of the office.

One of the jars apparently didn’t break and was taken as evidence by investigating police officers.

Vicious, Venal and Violent Reaction to pro-life activist Jim Pouillon’s Killing

[Editor’s Note: the following is a letter from Father Thomas Eutenerer, president of Human Life International, sent out on September 14.]

This is really the only title that adequately describes the murderous movement known as “pro-choice” or “pro-abortion.” It is now frightening, thought not at all surprising, how absolutely hardened and inhumane our culture has become because of this satanic force that has grown strong through 36 years of wholesale murder of God’s precious innocents. The pro-choice movement has made murder just a casual pastime now, part of the general round of things that the news reports routinely. Yet, how surprised should we be at this when we stand back and see the unclean spirit that is behind the movement whose sole motivation is death? The fruits of this movement are universally demonic: a callous disregard for the sanctity of life, the insane promotion of death through lies, distortions and hate-filled propaganda. The nastiness of this movement is no longer able to be contained.

If this were not evident prior to last Friday, then the killing of pro-life activist Jim Pouillon in Michigan on the eighth anniversary of 9-11 should make it clear. Literally every major pro-life organization condemned in categorical terms the killing of abortionist George Tiller immediately as it happened this summer, but we are still waiting to hear an outright condemnation of Pouillon’s murder from Planned Parenthood or the National Organization for Women and other organizations that profit from and justify baby-killing. NARAL issued a pathetic “condemnation” which refused to recognize the anti-life motivation for this killing. After all, lies and killing are the business of these organizations: at six weeks, sixteen weeks or sixty-two years in Jim’s case, they have no regard for the protection of the innocent if it does not support their anti-life agenda.

The summit of viciousness had to come, however, from the media, the propaganda mouthpiece for the killing industry. A local paper, the Flint Journal, published within 24 hours the entire legal record of the victim, including dismissed misdemeanors and traffic violations. Outside of the fact that this man was arrested and penalized numerous times precisely for his pro-life activism, have we ever heard of such a diabolic mockery of an innocent man’s death? As far as I am concerned, Jim Pouillon will be granted a chance to stand up and testify against the editors of the Flint Journal on the day of their judgment. He will convict them of every vicious word. Woe to those journalists of iniquity! Their names will be blotted out of the Book of Life because they are sadistic enemies of life.

The evidence of pro-abortion viciousness is all around us for those who have eyes to see. HLI has documented thousands of cases of abortion violence and published the information on a special website (www.abortionviolence.com). It should convince any reader that the pro-death movement is the most violent and hateful social movement ever known to man, without exception.

Don’t forget the social impact of decades of “pro-choice” rhetoric either. If you think it has not had any effect on our youth culture, take a look at a smattering of the comments that appeared the day of the shooting on the NBC 25 (Mid-Michigan) news comment section. The few that I have published below show only a fraction of the hate. That is all I have the stomach to write today. We will pray for the dear pro-life martyr, Jim Pouillon, who literally gave his life for babies; but more than anything, let us pray for these vicious enemies of life who will have a great deal to answer for when they are judged by a more severe force of Justice than the internet.

Some of the comments on the murder of James Pouillon received by NBC-25 Mid-Michigan News

• One way to stop these nuts
• Maybe the rest of these anti abortion nut-jobs will get a hint that people don’t want to see these signs.
• I’m glad this kook is gone.
• Oh well
• Just consider it a retroactive abortion on another right wing whack job. No great loss. (This one was posted by a man calling himself Dave Devilish…)
• kooks
• I’ve never seen this man before, but I’ve seen others like him. The signs are so offensive that the issue becomes about the sign instead of being about abortion. He hurts the pro-life cause and I’m glad that he’s gone.
• Good!
• One less Democracy-hating fundie terrorist to put up with. Did they think Americans would just allow them to go around stalking & murdering people and not face the backlash? He was harassing schoolchildren, and he got what was coming to him.
• Pro-life = Anti-abortion
• Since most “pro-lifers” I’ve spoken with are in favor of capital punishment, one can’t help but marvel at their hypocrisy.
• Religion is poison-a late-stage cancer in our world.

Pro-Lifers Receiving Death Threats

The Wichita Eagle ran a front-page story about threats of violence against Operation Rescue and other pro-life groups.

Abortion opponents receive death threats By Tim Potter,
The Wichita Eagle June 19, 2009
Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, says the number of threats has increased since the slaying of George Tiller. Three Wichita-based anti-abortion groups say they have received death threats in response to last month’s killing of George Tiller. For years, Operation Rescue has received threats, but the number increased markedly after Tiller’s killing, the group’s president, Troy Newman, said Thursday. Some of the threats have been aimed at anti-abortion activities planned in Wichita this weekend, Newman said. Soon after Tiller’s shooting, police contacted four to five local anti-abortion groups, asking them to contact authorities if they received threats, said Wichita police Capt. Brent Allred.

Allred said police would investigate threats on either side of the abortion issue. “That’s our job… to take a fair and impartial role on this,” he said. For this weekend’s events, off-duty officers have been hired to help provide security, Newman said. It wasn’t clear Thursday whether on-duty officers will be used. The activities will include a prayer vigil Saturday near Tiller’s clinic on East Kellogg. One e-mail referring to this weekend’s activities said there would be “vengeance,” Newman said. Newman said he has received other troubling messages since the shooting. In one, a man said, “You’re dead, punk….” In another, a woman threatened Newman and his family. Newman said he has reported some of the threats to police and that he is taking security measures. “You’re aware of your surroundings, no matter where you are,” he said.

‘Emotions are… high’ Around the nation, anti-abortion leaders have been taking precautions before and after the shooting, said the Rev. Patrick Mahoney, director of the Washington, D.C.-based Christian Defense Coalition. “I don’t want to go into detail, but I know for a fact that numerous pro-life leaders travel with bulletproof vests,” Mahoney said. Wichita is now at the “epicenter” of the fallout over Tiller’s death, he said. A gunman shot Tiller as he was serving as an usher May 31 at his church near Rock Road and 13th Street. “Emotions are running very high in Wichita,” said Mahoney, who said he plans to be at the anti-abortion activities here this weekend. Within hours of the May 31 shooting, Newman said, Allred called to say that authorities were concerned that someone could seek retaliation for Tiller’s death by attacking anti-abortion leaders.

Although abortion opponents have widely condemned the shooting, some of them have been accused of encouraging the attack on Tiller by vocal, often bitter, opposition to doctors performing abortions. Tiller was one of the few doctors nationally providing late-term abortions. Scott Roeder, a 51-year-old who has lived around the Kansas City area and has protested at abortion clinics, has been charged with first-degree murder in Tiller’s death. Mahoney, the Christian Defense Coalition leader, said he has received about 50 death threats over the years but didn’t receive what he would consider a direct death threat after the Tiller shooting – although one man called to say, “You better watch yourself.”

Abortion is an emotional, controversial subject on both sides of the issue, and when you have that kind of emotion… on the fringes of both sides of the divide you’re going to have people who lash out,” he said. Other threats Just a few hours after the Tiller shooting, Mary Wilkinson was answering phones at the Wichita office of the anti-abortion group Kansans for Life when she got a call that stunned and scared her, she said. “This person was out of control, emotionally, you could just tell” – speaking in a loud, angry tone about Tiller’s killing, she said. She said she wanted to tell him, “We did not have anything to do with this…. That’s not what this organization is about. We were horrified about it and sad about it. Killing is never the answer.” But the person – it sounded like a man, but she wasn’t sure – wouldn’t let her “get a word in edgewise,” she said. “I hope you’re happy,” the person said. “You’ve killed him. Now I hope somebody comes and kills you all.”

The call prompted David Gittrich, the group’s state development director, to call police and report the threat. At the office, the staff waited for an officer to arrive before they left. “Because of that threat, we decided it was time to go home,” Gittrich said. Wilkinson said she feels optimistic now. “I think things are settling down now,” she said. “I just think the community needs some healing time.” A third Wichita-based anti-abortion group, the Kansas Coalition for Life, also has received threats, said the group’s president, Mark Gietzen. Gietzen said he received three serious threats since the shooting, two of which were “bad enough that I called police,” he said. One person left a text message a few hours after the shooting. The message: “One of you is going to die for what you did to Tiller.”

In another story

Fr. Tom Euteneuer, of Human Life International, describes what he and his organization have encountered.

Question: As an outspoken visible pro-life advocate, you work against the goals of pro-abortion politics and the abortion industry.  In what ways have you been threatened, either written or verbally, with physical harm?

Fr. Euteneuer: In the days when I was more actively doing sidewalk counseling, I was threatened with death twice by abortion clinic workers, threatened with physical harm numerous times by boyfriends and others who accompanied women to the clinic and several times I was assaulted by people in vehicles trying to run me over. The verbal harassment is too numerous and gross to recount, especially when directed against a man of the cloth.

Question:
What forms of harassment have you encountered in your work and travels, and which
groups or organizations seem to be sources of intimidation?

Fr. Euteneuer: There has been less harassment in my work with HLI given that I remain mostly in pro-life circles and focus on training and motivating. The anti-lifers are usually in their comfortable air-conditioned offices plotting the destruction of more children and do not harass us too much both because they are cowards and because they don’t need to have direct contact with us.

Several members of our international network who have direct contact with the abortion lobby in their countries do encounter problems however:

  1. In Kenya an abortionist tried to poison our director;
  2. in Mexico, the HLI director found a knife covered with red blood-like liquid stuck in his couch with a message to stay out of abortion;
  3. in Austria the anti-lifers have sued our affiliate (without success) and the city government of Vienna created special laws against them;
  4. in the Philippines there are attacks against the character of our pro-life people and one parliamentarian called for the deportation of HLI’s Dr. Brian Clowes when he did a speaking tour there;
  5. in Ecuador our affiliate leader was threatened with death, satanic graffiti was put on the door of a church against us,  the severed head of a dog was thrown into a church with a desecrated Sacred Host in its mouth.

Question: What specific security steps must you take in order to protect yourself from these attacks?

Fr. Euteneuer: Prayer.

Question:
In addition, have you learned of threats or violence to people close to you or in your family?

Fr. Euteneuer: There has only been intimidation of family members like my father who stands in front of the local Planned Parenthood.  It is regular fare: he has insults hurled at him and bottles thrown from cars.

Question:
How have these instances of intimidation and violence changed over the years?

Fr. Euteneuer: The violence and intimidation seems to change as political fortunes change: it tends to go from personal to institutional. For example, during the Clinton years the FACE Act was passed to shut down Operation Rescue-type protests; we can expect the same and worse in the Obama Administration. The physical assaults and intimidations will likely get worse also as the forces of death are emboldened by radical laws and policies.

Question:
Have threats, intimidation or violent harassment ever come in an open or official capacity?

Fr. Euteneuer: HLI was denied official status at the UN in the late ‘90s due to its strong stance on the life issues. The only other example that I can think of in my case is when the Minister of Health in Zimbabwe officially vetoed my talk to a nursing school in Harare. The incident of Dr. Brian Clowes in the Philippines mentioned above is another example. Other than open criticism in the media, we are more of a grass-roots training and educational organization and under the radar screen of most governments.

Question:
Finally, has there been an increase in irrational behavior including threats and violence?

Fr. Euteneuer: The behaviors have always been irrational, but the new element seems to be an occult element that I believe we will see more in the future. “Death-scorts” seem to be more prone to curse and “pray” against pro-lifers probably due to so many of them being involved in New Age and witchcraft. Some of it is overt and some not. The abortion clinic owner in Rockford, IL periodically comes out of his place dressed in a devil outfit, for example. He also puts blasphemous images of Jesus and religion in the window of the clinic. One abortionist in FL some years ago shook blood from his abortion instruments on the pro-lifers after a morning of killing. We will see much more of this in time.
