The Left is Up in Arms that Glenn Beck is comparing the plight of the Unborn to Slavery…but..his comparison mirrors that of Jesse Jackson who wrote this in 1977:

“Another area that concerns me greatly, namely because I know how it has been used with regard to race, is the psycholinguistics involved in this whole issue of abortion. If something can be dehumanized through the rhetoric used to describe it, then the major battle has been won. So when American soldiers can drop bombs on Vietnam and melt the faces and hands of children into a hunk of rolling protoplasm and in their minds say they have not maimed or killed a fellow human being something terribly wrong and sick has gone on in that mind. That is why the Constitution called us three-fifths human and then whites further dehumanized us by calling us “niggers.” It was part of the dehumanizing process. The first step was to distort the image of us as human beings in. order to justify that which they wanted to do and not even feel like they had done anything wrong. Those advocates of taking. life prior to birth do not call it killing or murder; they call it abortion. They further never talk about aborting a baby because that would imply something human. Rather they talk about aborting the fetus. Fetus sounds less than human and therefore can be justified.”

And Charles Finney, on slavery , (Lectures on Revivals of Religion, chapter XV, Hindrances to Revivals) “Revivals are hindered when ministers and churches take wrong ground in regard to any question involving human rights. Take the subject of SLAVERY (abortion), for instance. The time was when this subject was not before the public mind. John Newton continued in the slave trade (abortionist trade) after his conversion. And so had his mind been perverted, and so completely was his conscience seared, in regard to this most nefarious traffic, that the sinfulness of it never occurred to his thoughts until some time after he became a child of God. Had light been poured upon his mind previously to his conversion, he never could have been converted without previously abandoning this sin. And after his conversion, when convinced of its iniquity, he could no longer enjoy the presence of God, without abandoning the sin for ever. So, doubtless, many slave dealers and slave holders (abortionists and abortion workers and supporters) in our own country have been converted, notwithstanding their participation in this abomination, because the sinfulness of it was not apparent to their minds. So ministers and churches, to a great extent throughout the land, have held their peace, and borne no testimony against this abominable abomination, existing in the church and in the nation”

Frederick Douglas, writes in “A Simple Tale of American Slavery: An Address Delivered in Sheffield, England, on September 11, 1846.

Many a night have I been wakened in Philpotts-street, Baltimore, by the passing-by, at midnight, of hundreds of slaves, carrying their chains and fetters and uttering cries and howlings, almost enough to startle the dead. They were going to the market to work in cotton or sugar, going off to be killed in the space of five or six years, in the swamps of Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana. These things are everyday occurrences in the United States; and for exposing this state of things, for bringing his powerful eloquence and pouring out his soul against such a state of things my brother Garrison has been laid in prison, and what is worse, he has been persecuted and stigmatised as an infidel by the Christian people of America, because he dared openly to unmask the hypocritical pretensions of those who committed these abominations—(loud cheers).

And this one Frederick Douglass .
In 1852, the leading citizens of Rochester asked Douglass to give a speech as part of their Fourth of July celebrations. Douglass accepted their invitation.
In his speech, however, Douglass delivered a scathing attack on the hypocrisy of a nation celebrating freedom and independence with speeches, parades and platitudes, while, within its borders, nearly four million humans were being kept as slaves.

“ What, then, remains to be argued? Is it that slavery is not divine; that God did not establish it; that our doctors of divinity are mistaken? There is blasphemy in the thought. That which is inhuman cannot be divine. Who can reason on such a proposition? They that can, may – I cannot. The time for such argument is past.
At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. Oh! had I the ability, and could I reach the nation’s ear, I would today pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke. For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed; and its crimes against God and man must be denounced. ..
There is not a nation of the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States at this very hour. Go search where you will, roam through all the monarchies and despotisms of the Old World, travel through South America, search out every abuse and when you have found the last, lay your facts by the side of the everyday practices of this nation, and you will say with me that, for revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a rival. “

William Garrison, abolitionist writes in No Compromise with the Evil of Slavery, 1854

I am a believer in that portion of the Declaration of American Independence in which it is set forth, as among self-evident truths, “that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Hence, I am an abolitionist…. They who desire me to be dumb on the subject of slavery, unless I will open my mouth in its defense, ask me to give the lie to my professions, to degrade my manhood, and to stain my soul… I do not know how to espouse freedom and slavery together. I do not know how to worship God and Mammon at the same time… If other men choose to go upon all fours, I choose to stand erect, as God designed every man to stand. If, practically falsifying its heaven-attested principles, this nation denounces me for refusing to imitate its example, then, adhering all the more tenaciously to those principles, I will not cease to rebuke it for its guilty inconsistency. Numerically, the contest may be an unequal one, for the time being; but the author of liberty and the source of justice, the adorable God, is more than multitudinous, and he will defend the right. My crime is that I will not go with the multitude to do evil. My singularity is that when I say that freedom is of God and slavery is of the devil, I mean just what I say. My fanaticism is that I insist on the American people abolishing slavery or ceasing to prate of the rights of man…The law that makes him a chattel is to be trampled underfoot; the compact that is formed at his expense, and cemented with his blood, is null and void; the church that consents to his enslavement is horribly atheistical; the religion that receives to its communion the enslaver is the embodiment of all criminality… Friends of the slave, the question is not whether by our efforts we can abolish slavery, speedily or remotely – for duty is ours, the result is with God; but whether we will go with the multitude to do evil, sell our birthright for a mess of pottage, cease to cry aloud and spare not, and remain in Babylon when the command of God is “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” Let us stand in our lot, “and having done all, to stand.” At least, a remnant shall be saved. Living or dying, defeated or victorious, be it ours to exclaim, “No compromise with slavery! Liberty for each, for all, forever! Man above all institutions! The supremacy of God over the whole earth!”

William Lloyd Garrison wrote this in The Liberator, an abolitionist newspaper he created because he had been censored from the regular press. January 1, 1831:

“I am aware, that many object to the severity of my language; but is there not cause for severity? I will be as harsh as truth, and as uncompromising as justice. On this subject, I do not wish to think, or speak, or write, with moderation. No! no! Tell a man whose house is on fire, to give a moderate alarm; tell him to moderately rescue his wife from the hand of the ravisher; tell the mother to gradually extricate her babe from the fire into which it has fallen; — but urge me not to use moderation in a cause like the present. I am in earnest — I will not equivocate — I will not excuse — I will not retreat a single inch — AND I WILL BE HEARD.”

It is clearly the duty of the American church to protest against the right of one man to hold his fellow man as a slave; and until she takes this position,m her influence for good, will be very much retarded. It is evidently the will of God that she should take this position, for He has said that it is His will, that every yoke should be broken and the oppressed be permitted to go free. We do not believe that a man can be a true follower of Christ, and wink at the great sin and crime of slaveholding. He must oppose it otherwise he must be ranked with those who sustain it. It is said in the Scriptures, that “he who is not for us is against us;” and the same principle will apply to the question of slavery. There is no neutral ground on the question. A look at history teaches us that great nations have been at this place before and men of God rose to the occasion to speak truth and bring light to a dark and dying nation:

William Wilberforce, “During times of trouble, the Christian is reminded at every turn that her Master’s kingdom is not of this world. When everything on earth looks black and threatening, she looks up to Heaven for her comfort; she considers herself a pilgrim and a stranger in practical ways. As a result she sticks close to the basic truths of her faith, and she examines closely her foundation, just as we all tend to do at the hour of our death…Nowadays God lifts up His hand, but we don’t notice; He multiplies our comforts, but we are not grateful; He chastises us, but we are not contrite…The question still remains: Is the sort of faith we see in our country today agreeable with the Word of God? If it’s not, then don’t you think it might be well worth sacrificing a little worldly comfort and prosperity during the short span of our existence in this life in return for a crown of eternal glory?

What should we do then? This question is of utmost importance- and the general answer is not difficult. The causes and nature of faith’s decay among our society indicate the course we need to follow. The disease that has attacked our community is a spiritual illness rather than a political one…In circumstances like these the best course of action is to boldly point out the differences between the adherents of God and Baal. The expediency of this action is confirmed by another consideration- that when people are aware that they are faced with a challenge, their spirits rise to the necessary level; they make up their minds to bear hardship and brave danger, to persevere in spite of fatigue and opposition . On the other hand, if they regard an event as being easy and ordinary, they are apt to fall asleep over their work and fail to accomplish much of anything at all. ..The question is no longer, “What can we get away with without hurting anyone?” Now we need to ask ourselves, “What restraints should we impose on our lives, given the circumstances in which we live? ” Given the condition of our nation today, we should be able to see clearly now that the spiritual person is the best patriot of all.

Nor should we only concern ourselves with our own personal conduct…but we should also encourage virtue in all our interactions with others, and at the same time express our disapproval of sin…But all this would be a fruitless effort if we do not bring back the prevalence of evangelical Christianity. We cannot hope to sustain, much less revive, our nation’s fainting morality without the support of a sincere and living faith. We cannot change morals from the outside in; we need an internal living principle that works from the inside out.

Guilt of New-England was written by William Lloyd Garrison, and appeared in The Liberator on January 7, 1832

Why is it—if we are really hostile to oppression—why is it, that so few petitions go into Congress on this subject?
That it is solely by the authority of the free states slavery is tolerated in our land. It is in vain that we profess to be opposed to the continuance of slavery, while our insincerity is so manifest. We are guilty—all guilty—horribly guilty

Frederick Douglas“Slaveholders and slave-traders never betray greater indiscretion, than when they venture to defend themselves, or their system of plunder, in any other community than a slaveholding one. Slavery has its own standards of morality, humanity, justice, and Christianity. Tried by that standard, it is a system of the greatest kindness to the slave—sanctioned by the purest morality—in perfect agreement with justice—and, of course, not inconsistent with Christianity. But, tried by any other, it is doomed to condemnation. The naked relation of master and slave is one of those monsters of darkness, to whom the light of truth is death! The wise ones among the slaveholders know this, and they studiously avoid doing anything, which, in their judgment, tends to elicit truth. Charles Finney, on slavery , (Lectures on Revivals of Religion, chapter XV, Hindrances to Revivals) “Still it may be said, that in many churches, this subject cannot be introduced without creating confusion and ill-will. This may be. It has been so upon the subject of temperance, and upon the subject of revivals too. In some churches, neither temperance nor revivals can be introduced without producing dissension. Sabbath-schools, and missionary operations, and everything of the kind have been opposed, and have produced dissensions in many churches. But is this a sufficient reason for excluding these subjects? And where churches have excluded these subjects for fear of contention, have they been blessed with revivals? Every body knows that they have not. But where churches have taken firm ground on these subjects, although individuals and sometimes numbers have opposed, still they have been blessed with revivals. Where any of these subjects are carefully and prayerfully introduced; where they are brought forward with a right spirit, and the true relative importance is attached to each one of them; if in such cases, there are those who will make disturbance and resist, let the blame fall where it ought. There are some individuals, who are themselves disposed to quarrel with this subject, who are always ready to exclaim, “Do not introduce these things into the church, they will create opposition.” And if the minister and praying people feel it their duty to bring the matter forward, they will themselves create a disturbance, and then say, “There, I told you so; now see what your introducing this subject has done; it will tear the church all to pieces.” And while they are themselves doing all they can to create division, they are charging the division upon the subject, and not upon themselves. There are some such people in many of our churches. “It may be objected, however, that this pressing of the Negro’s right to suffrage is premature. Let us have slavery abolished, it may be said, let us have labor organized, and then, in the natural course of events, the right of suffrage will be extended to the Negro. I do not agree with this. The constitution of the human mind is such, that if it once disregards the conviction forced upon it by a revelation of truth, it requires the exercise of a higher power to produce the same conviction afterwards. The American people are now in tears. The Shenandoah has run blood–the best blood of the North. The Vindicator, July 22, 1859, p. 2, c. 2 – Abstractions- “People have been in the habit so long of settling to their own satisfaction every difficult question rising out of the slavery issue by pronouncing it an “empty abstraction,” until at length the expression has passed into a common phrase of stereotyped wisdom, lulling the South to an unnatural and dangerous repose.
Did the good people who, on every occasion, are so eager thus to lay at rest a question which many men, great and small, have considered both substantial and vital, ever ask themselves what an abstraction is? Do they remember that they have but an abstract right to life, until it is assailed?--Do they not forget that they hold their property, of any kind, only by an abstract right until it is interfered with by some person or persons? In a word, are they not aware that they enjoy life, liberty and property only as an abstract right, until, being interfered with, it becomes a living, substantial claim? Apply this principle to the question which now agitates the political world, and the myth which mystifying compromisers have thrown around this issue is at once dispelled. We have, as we contend and the compromisers acknowledge, the same abstract right to protection for our slave property in the territories which we have to protection for our lives, liberty and property here in Virginia. As long as this fact is conceded by the world, we are content to let the thing rest as an abstraction; but when a powerful party, like the combined Black Republicans and squatter sovereignty advocates, deny that right, and threaten to follow up their denial by an open and fatal attack upon it, then that which was before an abstraction is converted into a living, substantial, all-absorbing principle, for which its advocates ought and will contend to the bitter end.”

In 1805, Thomas Jefferson lamented: “I have long since given up the expectation of any early provision for the extinguishment of slavery among us. In Sermons, Speeches, and Letters on Slavery and its war – The National Midnight , A sermon preached at Westfield , MA November 16,1856 on the occasion of the election of James Buchanan to the Presidency of the United States 1869 : Gilbert Haven laments,

How horrible our sin ! How more horrible will be our punishment!

What has caused this defeat! Why did not truth and right prevail? Why did we not win? Because there was no deep repentance of the real cause of their shames and crimes, and no true sympathy with their chief victims. The cause is slavery; the real victim is the slave. .. We have had no tears for the slave. His fate has not been the battle-cry of any party.

Listen to the words of William Lloyd Garrison’s The Death of Slavery which appeared in his antislavery publication called The Liberator on February 10, 1865:

“At last, after eighty years of wandering and darkness,—of cruelty and oppression, on a colossal scale, towards a helpless and an unoffending race—of recreancy to all the heaven-attested principles enunciated by our revolutionary sires in justification of their course; through righteous judgment and fiery retribution; through national dismemberment and civil war; through suffering, bereavement and lamentation, extending to every city, town, village and hamlet, almost every household in the land; through a whole generation of Anti-Slavery warning, expostulation and rebuke, resulting in wide-spread contrition and repentance; the nation, rising in the majesty of its moral power and political sovereignty, has decreed that liberty shall be “proclaimed throughout all the land, to all the inhabitants thereof,” and that henceforth no such anomalous being as slaveholder or slave shall exist beneath the “stars and stripes,” within the domain of the republic. (Cheers.)” Garrison later said this about the efforts of the abolitionists : ” And the same verdict you will render in vindication of the clear-sighted, untiring, intrepid, unselfish, uncompromising Anti-Slavery phalanx, who, through years of conflict and persecution—misrepresented, misunderstood, ridiculed and anathematized from one end of the country to the other—have labored “in season and out of season” to bring about this glorious result. (Renewed applause.) You will, I venture to think and say, agree with me, that only radical abolitionism is, at this trial-hour, loyalty, justice, impartial freedom, national salvation—the Golden Rule blended with the Declaration of Independence! (Great applause.) “

William Lloyd Garrison
Early in Garrison’s abolition life, Samuel May, friend and mentor, expressed concern that Garrison needs to “soften his language” and style of speaking. Garrison says he will do so only “when the poor downtrodden slaves tell me I am too harsh”. “O my friend”, urged May,..”do try to moderate your indignation, and keep more cool; why you are all on fire.” Garrison looked straight at May, and said: ”Brother May, I have need to be all on fire, for I have mountains of ice to melt.” (Story told by Henry May, in his definitive biography, All on Fire.)

The Irrepressible Conflict

“When that evil day shall come, and all further effort at resistance shall be impossible, then, if there shall be no better hope for redemption than I can now foresee, I shall say with Franklin, while looking abroad over the whole earth for a new and more congenial home, “Where liberty dwells, there is my country.”
You will tell me that these fears are extravagant and chimerical. I answer, they are so; but they are so only because the designs of the slaveholders must and can be defeated. But it is only the possibility of defeat that renders them so. They cannot be defeated by inactivity. There is no escape from them, compatible with non-resistance…. The democratic party, finally, has procured from a supreme judiciary, fixed in its interest, a decree that slavery exists by force of the constitution in every territory of the United States, paramount to all legislative authority, either within the territory, or residing in congress.
Such is the democratic party. It has no policy, state or federal, for finance, or trade, or manufacture, or commerce, or education, or internal improvements, or for the protection or even the security of civil or religious liberty. It is positive and uncompromising in the interest of slavery — negative, compromising, and vacillating, in regard to everything else. It boasts its love of equality, and wastes its strength, and even its life, in fortifying the only aristocracy known in the land. It professes fraternity, and, so often as slavery requires, allies itself with proscription. William Wilberforce:

In 1791, Wilberforce concluded a speech against the slave trade thus:
“Never, never, will we desist till we have wiped away this scandal from the Christian name, released ourselves from the load of guilt, under which we at present labour, and extinguished every trace of this bloody traffic, of which our posterity, looking back to the history of these enlightened times, will scarce believe that it has been suffered to exist so long a disgrace and dishonour to this country.” (William Wilberforce: The Life of the Great Anti-Slave Trade Campaigner by William Hague p. 198)

He wrote in his book, A Practical View, published in 1797,
Accustom yourself to look first to the dreadful consequences of failure; then fix your eye on the glorious prize which is before you; and when your strength begins to fail, and your spirits are will nigh exhausted, let the animating view rekindle your resolution, and call forth in renewed vigour the fainting energies of your soul.” (p. 276)

Revivalist Charles Finney, 1873 – “Away with this milk and water preaching of a love of Christ that has no holiness or moral discrimination in it. Away with preaching a love of God that is not angry with sinners every day. Away with preaching a Christ not crucified for sin…If immorality prevails in the land, the fault is our in a great degree. If there is a decay of conscience, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the public press lacks moral discrimination, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the church is degenerate and worldly, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the world looses its interest in religion, the pulpit is responsible for it. If Satan rules in our halls of legislation, the pulpit is responsible for it. If our politics become so corrupt that the very foundations of our government are ready to fall away, the pulpit is responsible for it. Gilbert Haven 1869 “We are so familiar with the word Slavery, that its real scope and character do not smite the eye with true horror. William Garrison speaking again about slavery in The Liberator December 21,1855, “They sought to liberate the slave by every righteous instrumentality—nothing more. But, to their grief and amazement, they were gradually led to perceive, by the terrible revelations of the hour, that the religious forces on which they had relied were all arrayed on the side of the oppressor; that the North was as hostile to emancipation as the South; that the spirit of slavery was omnipresent, invading every sanctuary, infecting every pulpit, controlling every press, corrupting every household, and blinding every vision; that no other alternative was presented to them, except to wage war with “principalities, and powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places,” and to separate themselves from every slaveholding alliance, or else to daub with untempered mortar, substitute compromise for principle, and thus betray the rights and liberties of the millions in thraldom, at a fearful cost to their own souls. ”

William Garrison – “Better to be always in a minority of one with God—branded as madman, incendiary, fanatic, heretic, infidel—frowned upon by “the powers that be,” and mobbed by the populace—or consigned ignominiously to the gallows, like him whose “soul is marching on,” though his “body lies mouldering in the grave,” or burnt to ashes at the stake like Wickliffe, or nailed to the cross like him who “gave himself for the world,”—in defence of the right, than like Herod, having the shouts of a multitude, crying, “It is the voice of a god, and not of a man!” ~ Slavery abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, the Liberator, December 29,1865 -one of my favorites of American history.

In the 1940′s, totalitarian regimes tried to silence the Church. Entire sections were reserved for priests in Dachau and Auschwitz, where St. Maximilian Kolbe was injected with carbolic acid. In Yugoslavia, Bishop Mišic of Mostar was threatened for decrying the massacre of women and children. The Greek Archbishop of Athens risked his life when he solemnly cursed the German plenipotentiary. The newspapers mocked Cardinal van Roey, Primate of Belgium, for repudiating Nazi eugenics. When Cardinal Hinsley of Westminster spoke out after 120 Salesian priests were slaughtered in Poland, European journalists accused him of “bad faith.” Father George W. Rutler:

DOUGLAS RESPONSE: The principles contained in the Dred Scott decision had been affirmed previously in various other decisions. What court or judge ever held that a negro was a citizen? The State courts had decided that question over and over again, and the Dred Scott decision on that point only affirmed what every court in the land knew to be the law….

“We are told that a man is not a Democrat who stands by Clay, Webster, and Cass, and the Compromise measures of 1850, and the Kansas and Nebraska bill of 1854. Whether a man be a Democrat or not on that platform, I intend to stand there as long as I have life. I intend to cling firmly to that principle which declares the right of each State and each Territory to settle the question of slavery, and every other domestic question, for themselves. I hold that if they want a Slave State, they have a right under the Constitution of the United States to make it so, and if they want a Free State, it is their right to have it..”

Let us not be merely “Bible Believing Christians” but “Bible Practicing Christians.” Let us put our “beliefs” to work+press in to understand the depths of our sin,the terror of judgment +the magnificent mercy we’ve been given through the bloody+violent sacrifice of God Himself. Frederick Douglass “At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. I think that it is enough if they have God on their side, without waiting for that other one. Henry David Thoreau “All voting is a sort of gaming, like checkers or backgammon, with a slight moral tinge to it, a playing with right and wrong, with moral questions; and betting naturally accompanies it. The character of the voters is not staked. I cast my v…ote, perchance, as I think right; but I am not vitally concerned that that right should prevail. I am willing to leave it to the majority. Its obligation, therefore, never exceeds that of expediency. Even voting for the right is doing nothing for it. It is only expressing to men feebly your desire that it should prevail. A wise man will not leave the right to the mercy of chance, nor wish it to prevail through the power of the majority. There is but little virtue in the action of masses of men. Henry David Thoreau “That government is best which governs not at all…Can there not be a government in which majorities do not virtually decide right and wrong, but conscience? — in which majorities decide only those questions to which the rule of expediency is applicable? Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience, then? …” ( Henry David Thoreau; Civil Disobedience 1849 )

Thoreau was an abolitionist who went on to state: “How does it become a man to behave toward this American government to-day? I answer, that he cannot without disgrace be associated with it. I cannot for an instant recognize that political …organization as my government which is the slave’s government also.

Henry David Thoreau All men recognize the right of revolution; that is, the right to refuse allegiance to, and to resist, the government, when its tyranny or its inefficiency are great and unendurable. But almost all say that such is not the case now. But such was the case, they think, in the Revolution of ’75. If one were to tell me that this was a bad government because it taxed certain foreign commodities brought to its ports, it is most probable that I should not make an ado about it, for I can do without them. All machines have their friction; and possibly this does enough good to counterbalance the evil. At any rate, it is a great evil to make a stir about it. But when the friction comes to have its machine, and oppression and robbery are organized, I say, let us not have such a machine any longer. In other words, when a sixth of the population of a nation which has undertaken to be the refuge of liberty are slaves, and a whole country is unjustly overrun and conquered by a foreign army, and subjected to military law, I think that it is not too soon for honest men to rebel and revolutionize. What makes this duty the more urgent is the fact that the country so overrun is not our own, but ours is the invading army…”( Henry David Thoreau; Civil Disobedience Part 1 1849 )

On March 23, 1775, the Second Virginia Convention had been relocated from the House of Burgesses to St. John’s Church in Richmond, because of increasing tension between the Colonies and the British. Patrick Henry stated:

…They tell us, sir, that we are weak – unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance, by lying supinely on our backs, and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot?

Sir, we are not weak, if we make a proper use of the means which the God of nature hath placed in our power. Three millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us.

T he battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable – and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come!

It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, “Peace! Peace!” – but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!

“The real damage is done by those millions who want to ‘survive.’ The honest men who just want to be left in peace. Those who don’t want their little lives disturbed by anything bigger than themselves. Those with no sides and no causes. Those who won’t take measure of their own strength, for fear of antagonizing their own weakness. Those who don’t like to make waves—or enemies. Those for whom freedom, honour, truth, and principles are only literature.” ~ Anti- Nazi Heroine Sophie Scholl

In 1942 Hans Scholl, a medical student at the University of Munich, his sister Sophie, Christoph Probst, Willi Graf, and Alexander Schmorell founded the “White Rose” movement, one of the few German groups that spoke out against Nazi genocidal policies… “We will not be silent,” they wrote to their fellow students. “We are your bad conscience. The White Rose will not leave you in peace!”

The church, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, must fight evil in three stages: The first was to question state injustice and call the state to responsibility; the second was to help the victims of injustice, whether they were church members or not. Ultimately, however, the church might find itself called “not only to help the victims who have fallen under the wheel, but to fall into the spokes of the wheel itself” in order to halt the machinery of injustice. Frederick Douglass “Slavery As It Now Exists in the United States: An Address Delivered in Bristol, England on August 25, 1846.” – “No other nation on the earth was so loud in its professions as the American people: their political professions were unbounded. They had heard of America, 3000 miles off, as the land of the free and the home of the brave; the asylum where the oppressed of all nations on the face of the globe could find refuge. Loud and long were their harangues on the 4th of July, the anniversary of their independence. Their declaration put forth that all men were born free, and were equally entitled to certain inalienable rights—to life and liberty in the pursuit of happiness; that all just governments derived their right to govern from the people—and yet, under the very eaves-droppings of their political institutions—under the very eaves-droppings of their chapels, were heard the clank of the fetters and the rattling of the chains which bound their miserable slaves together, to be driven by the lash of their driver on board the ships for New Orleans, there to be sold in the market like brutes …Yes, they were a nation of Christian professors! Their ministers of region, on each returning sabbath, greeted the presence of the Almighty with a lie on their lips. Their first salutation was, “We thank thee, O Lord, that we live in a land of civil and religious liberty.” A land of civil and religious liberty, where three millions of people were deprived by stern enactment of the right to read the word of God! …A land of civil and religious liberty, where three millions were in chains! … A land of civil and religious liberty, where the Bible Society dared not circulate a single Bible among three millions of people’ A land of civil and religious liberty, where to act on the principle of the gospel which they professed, and to do to others as they would be done by, was to incur the penalty of death! Was that a land of civil and religious liberty? And yet their ministers of religion cried amen to the prayer, and professed that America was the freest nation on the globe. Oh, yes, they did profess well.”

“What if you had been alive then [During the Nazi Holocaust] ? “that’s a question all of us have to ask. The thing that bothers me the most in the United States today is that the moral foundations of the republic are shattered. Our growing apathy disturbs me. One of the interesting things about the Nazi revolution is that Germany was in a moral vacuum [when Hitler came to power], and moral vacuums, like natural vacuums, seek to be filled. A courageous church, unafraid to speak out, is the only hope to fill that void”, he believes, citing the following statement from Albert Einstein:

“Being a lover of freedom, when the [Nazi] revolution came, I looked to the universities to defend [freedom], knowing that they had always boasted of their devotion to the cause of truth; but no the universities were immediately silenced. Then I looked to the great editors of the newspapers, whose flaming editorials in days gone by had proclaimed their love of freedom; but they, like the universities, were silenced.

“Only the church stood squarely across the path of Hitler’s campaign for suppressing the truth.” ~ The Rev. Charles Carroll, an Episcopalian priest, and an official observer at the Nuremberg war crime trials. He spent a lifetime studying the philosophy of German and Nazi medicine.

“By the time I was born, my destiny was decided, as were the destinies of so many Jewish children. The Nazis had no use for Jew-ish children.”

“Everybody always says when we talk about tragic human events such as genocide, never again. That’s an important idea, never again. If I want to help prevent genocide from happening, I’d better understand it. What made it possible for a guy like Adolf Hitler to rise to power? If we can understand that, maybe we can use that to prevent other terrorists from rising to power.”

Hitler, she said, took advantage of the poor economy that followed the Great Depression. “Hitler told them he could make their lives much better and many people believed him. Instead of solving the crisis, he blamed the Jews. So that is another thing to remember: anytime a ruler or president starts blaming people, looking for scapegoats instead of taking responsibility, that’s a dangerous sign.”

Hitler was a terrorist who rose to power because good people said nothing, she said.

“The key word here is terrorist. Terrorists have no respect for human life,” she said. “In Germany, not all Germans were Nazis. There were many good Germans — but nobody spoke up.”

“We are told that we may not interfere with abortion. We are told that we may not “impose our morality” on those who wish to allow or participate in the taking of the life of infants before birth; yet no one calls it “imposing morality” to prohibit the taking of life after people are born. We are told as well that there exists a “right” to end the lives of unborn children; yet no one can explain how such a right can exist in stark contradiction of each person’s fundamental right to life. That right to life belongs equally to babies in the womb, babies born handicapped, and the elderly or infirm…Our Nation cannot continue down the path of abortion, so radically at odds with our history, our heritage, and our concepts of justice. This sacred legacy, and the well-being and the future of our country, demand that protection of the innocents must be guaranteed and that the personhood of the unborn be declared and defended throughout our land.” ~ January 14, 1988, President Ronald Reagan.

I was asked to think about what it would have been like I had lived in the 1840’s, during the time of slavery.

I gave that much thought and I would like to submit to you my story. This story is not truth – but based in truth. I wrote it with all the imagination I could muster combining my personal research of the slave era with my current life as a pro-lifer. I want you to consider what the battle to end abortion and free the unborn from the grip of death would be like if we looked at it thru the eyes of an abolitionist.

So If you will bear this lengthy tale- Here is my life growing up in the American South:

I live in Georgia, my family is not wealthy. I am a young woman. In my life, women do not have much political power, but we have learned ways to influence our men.

My best friend lives down the road. Her father owns a huge cotton farm by which he does fairly well. We recently went into town to get some goods. While my friend and I shopped and pranced around town, her father was busy gathering items for the farm. As we walked through town, it was a normal Saturday afternoon. We passed the mill store , the feed store, and Anne’s boutique. I know many of the merchants because we only have one church in our town. We attend the First Southern Gospel Church of Georgia. It is quaint and I dream of the day I will marry in that little church.

Our pastor is a simple man, humble and yet he can bellow out quite a sermon. After he preaches, he gathers at the back of the church where we all file past shaking his hand and assuring him his message has rescued us from the flames of hell. Sometimes I hear the Deacon snicker at his dramatic style, but, as they say, that is what they hired him to do.

There is one place in town that makes me uncomfortable. It is the slave auction. Once a month, slave drivers come through town – they use the local jail and local hotel to house these pathetic creatures. Then they take them to the town square and the people gather early in hopes of getting the prize worker. Today was especially disturbing. As I watched from a distance, a young boy was placed on the block. The people gathered round to examine his features. They like to look at his teeth, they say that is the best way to tell if the slave is healthy and strong. We learned this trick from trading horses, really isn’t much different between the two – both work the fields. Yet, I wonder, how these pathetic creatures feel when they are handled so.

While watching this sight, I noticed that it was my friend’s father whose bid “won the prize” – he seemed rather pleased and began the process of payment, when all of a sudden – a sassy female slave screamed and ran at the boy. She fell at his feet and hung onto his legs. They both sobbed. I thought, what does this Ni**er girl think she is doing? But, then I also thought that in some small fashion – she showed a certain bravery. The master began to pry her off and when she refused to let go – he took out his whip and beat her. I turned my head.

We were off and running, goods in hand and a satisfied feeling that we had accomplished all that we drove to town to accomplish.

That evening, I had a disturbing dream. I relived that day in town, only this time, I saw myself on the block and my mother being beaten. I woke up sweating and laid wide eyed all evening. Little did I know that this vision, of placing myself in the shoes of that little slave boy would affect my life so dramatically – but – I am getting ahead of myself.

Sunday came and we all gathered at the church. It is really our schoolhouse, but we use it on Sundays. My friend came with her family and their new slave boy. The slaves must attend church, it is required that they hear the Gospel. They are heathens you know and they need to be converted. Of course, they cannot read. They sit very quietly separate from the townspeople. We do not view them as “people” they are creatures who need to be “cared for”.

We have debates at church suppers over the correct way to treat the slave. Some get heated as they almost defend the slave, saying it is godly to show them compassion and besides, they claim, we get them to work better if we treat them well. Others insist that discipline and fear is the way to keep the slaves in line. The discussion gets heated some days – but- we always end the discussion agreeing to disagree. After all, the minister reminds us, we are all part of His body and we should not allow such division among us. There are some, though, like my father who refuses to have any slaves at all. They often dismiss him, telling him, “Look, that is your choice, if you do not believe in slavery, don’t have one – but stop preaching against what we do- it is none of your business.” My father shakes his head, often walking away in disgust. I do not think he wants to keep the peace on this matter.

I am 30 now , I have had quite the life. In fact, I never married and I was involved with a career. It is rare that a woman does not marry, but she is able to support herself these days. My friends tell me I chase men away, they say I am to radical about my beliefs and that causes men to avoid me. They may be correct because, you see, I have become what they call, an abolitionist. Year ago, my father began to listen to the abolitionist views. He read the words of William Garrison a great author in the anti-slavery movement. I joined him when we went down to the slave auctions and disrupted their activities. Many call us “agitators” and they may be correct. You see, that dream I had as a young girl came back to haunt me. The abolitionists told us to place ourselves in the actual place of the slave. They told us that God commanded two things – to love Him with all of our hearts and to love our neighbor as ourselves. To do this – we must put our neighbor in our shoes, and see the world through his eyes. But first, we had to see the slave as a person- equal and in need of protection and freedom.

I moved, I no longer live in Georgia, I have moved to another southern state. I came out here to join full time in the abolitionist movement. My family supports me, but I miss them dearly. My father requested I get involved in my local church as soon as I arrived. I found a sweet church, with precious people. My pastor is anti-slavery as well, although, I think he sees me as a little overboard. The minister is certain to give a few sermons a year against slavery, but he is adamant that his main focus is evangelism. Most of my church tells me this – they say that they agree that the slave deserves his freedom, but we cannot make it our main focus. I am often told that we all have a different calling, and mine happens to be to the anti-slavery movement. This message conflicts me. Sometimes it is easier to speak with those who oppose me than those who agree with me. I feel that action is a sign of belief.

Occasionally, I meet pro-slavery church members. Mostly they avoid me, but on occasion I am able to speak to them. One such member told me that they had seen “radicals” with “Picket signs” protesting the local mayors election. This member was not that familiar with my personal views on that point and they continued their assault against my abolitionist friends, calling them “unkind and unloving” because they were publicly exposing the mayor’s pro-slavery positions. She began her assault by quoting from a message she heard preached that morning. That morning in sort of a joking way, the minister told the congregation that if “you plan on taking to the streets with placards please do not tell anyone you belong to this church.”

She said the pastor would agree with her position. I quickly shut her down, telling her that I would not attack my abolitionist brothers and sisters in such a way. That statement by the minister was meant as a joke – yet- for those of us who do picket, it strikes at our hearts to hear this. I realize he is unaware of how it affects us and he has never reprimanded me, but, I have to wonder if he thinks our abolitionist ways are to confrontational.

I am often caught between two worlds. The world of simple Christianity and the world of “agitating”. These worlds seem to clash and I am often conflicted at what the right thing to do is. The majority of “church goers” although “anti-slavery” are not “abolitionists” and the majority of “abolitionists” although “Christians” are not “Church goers”. There is a disconnect taking place and a frustration among the abolitionists with the established church.

In my church we often speak of the Old Testament stories , many motivate me. We place ourselves in stories like Esther or in Jericho, and we challenge each other saying, “Would you be Esther if faced with such a decision?” and “Would you hide the spies if you lived in Jericho?” We love to speak of our founding fathers and proclaim our heroic patriotism each swearing we’d die for this land – forsake our honor and our wealth- and lay it all down. We must stand for what is RIGHT, the minister proclaims, despite what the world throws our way “Do not compromise”.

The slave, he is in front of me every day. I can hear the crackle of the whip and I can see the pain in his eyes. It is sometimes more than I can bear- where do I go to hide myself from the reality of slavery? It is everywhere , even in the North – where they profit from the clothing manufacturers to the building of slave ships, where newspapers make their living on ads they sell to slave owners and insurance companies profit from insuring slave vessels. The North claims they are not at fault with slavery, but we all know – there are slaves in the North. There is no place to go which is not soaked in the sweat of the slave.

Ordained Presbyterian minister Rev. Fred. A. Ross, D.D., exposes the North’s hypocrisy in his book, “Slavery Ordained of God.”
1. The number of Northern church-members concerned, directly or indirectly, in building and fitting out ships for the African slave-trade, and the slave-trade between the States.
2. The number of Northern church-members who traffic with slave-holders, and are seeking to make money by selling them negro-clothing, handcuffs, and cowhides.
3. The number of Northern church-members who have sent orders to New Orleans, and other Southern cities, to have slaves sold, to pay debts owing them from the South. [See Uncle Tom’s Cabin.]
4. The number of Northern church-members who buy the cotton, sugar, rice, tobacco, oranges, pine-apples, figs, ginger, cocoa, melons, and a thousand other things, raised by slave-labor.
5. The number of Northern church-members who have intermarried with slave-holders, and have thus become slave-owners themselves, or enjoy the wealth made by the blood of the slave,–especially if there be any Northern ministers of the gospel in such a predicament.
6. The number of Northern church-members who are the descendants of the men who kidnapped negroes in Africa and brought them to Virginia and New England in former years.
7. The number of Northern church-members who own stock in under-ground railroads, running off fugitive slaves, and in Sabbath-breaking railroads and canals.

There is talk of war..the abolitionist are using this to awaken the people, tug at the hearts of our fellow-country man that God requires us to abandon slavery, that it will in fact, bring his wrath. We have seen many conversions. As we speak, John Newton, a former slave captain, has published his memoirs. Many slaves have been freed and educated and they are causing a stir among those still in captivity. Slave masters are uneasy with the “hope” which is building in their slaves when they see Frederick Douglas and others walking free. People are awakening and some are speaking on behalf of the slave. But this has some very angry and they commence vile attacks on my fellow abolitionists.

In his book, “God Against Slavery” (1857), Rev. George B. Cheever, D.D defends the abolitionist,

“ I reaffirm it, that the infidelity of certain abolitionists, whose names have become a byword with you, is occasioned by your conduct. You often call them ‘the troublers of Israel.’ I will answer in their behalf, out of that blessed book which your inhumanity has brought into contempt:
‘And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, art thou he that troubleth Israel? And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim.’ [I Kings 18:17-18]”

Yet, for those fighting for the slave, there has been a cost. Frederick Douglass, writes in “A Simple Tale of American Slavery:: An Address Delivered in Sheffield, England, on September 11, 1846.

Many a night have I been wakened in Philpotts-street, Baltimore, by the passing-by, at midnight, of hundreds of slaves, carrying their chains and fetters and uttering cries and howlings, almost enough to startle the dead. They were going to the market to work in cotton or sugar, going off to be killed in the space of five or six years, in the swamps of Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana. These things are everyday occurrences in the United States; and for exposing this state of things, for bringing his powerful eloquence and pouring out his soul against such a state of things my brother Garrison has been laid in prison, and what is worse, he has been persecuted and stigmatised as an infidel by the Christian people of America, because he dared openly to unmask the hypocritical pretensions of those who committed these abominations— …”

Garrison, now there is a man to emulate. He has no fear, how I love his spunk, he writes in “No Compromise with the Evil of Slavery“, 1854

I am a believer in that portion of the Declaration of American Independence in which it is set forth, as among self-evident truths, “that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Hence, I am an abolitionist…. They who desire me to be dumb on the subject of slavery, unless I will open my mouth in its defense, ask me to give the lie to my professions, to degrade my manhood, and to stain my soul… I do not know how to espouse freedom and slavery together. I do not know how to worship God and Mammon at the same time… If other men choose to go upon all fours, I choose to stand erect, as God designed every man to stand. If, practically falsifying its heaven-attested principles, this nation denounces me for refusing to imitate its example, then, adhering all the more tenaciously to those principles, I will not cease to rebuke it for its guilty inconsistency. Numerically, the contest may be an unequal one, for the time being; but the author of liberty and the source of justice, the adorable God, is more than multitudinous, and he will defend the right. My crime is that I will not go with the multitude to do evil. My singularity is that when I say that freedom is of God and slavery is of the devil, I mean just what I say. My fanaticism is that I insist on the American people abolishing slavery or ceasing to prate of the rights of man…The law that makes him a chattel is to be trampled underfoot; the compact that is formed at his expense, and cemented with his blood, is null and void; the church that consents to his enslavement is horribly atheistical; the religion that receives to its communion the enslaver is the embodiment of all criminality… Friends of the slave, the question is not whether by our efforts we can abolish slavery, speedily or remotely – for duty is ours, the result is with God; but whether we will go with the multitude to do evil, sell our birthright for a mess of pottage, cease to cry aloud and spare not, and remain in Babylon when the command of God is “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” Let us stand in our lot, “and having done all, to stand.” At least, a remnant shall be saved. Living or dying, defeated or victorious, be it ours to exclaim, “No compromise with slavery! Liberty for each, for all, forever! Man above all institutions! The supremacy of God over the whole earth!

Another great man to admire within the abolitionist movement is former slave, Frederick Douglass . In 1852, the leading citizens of Rochester asked Douglass to give a speech as part of their Fourth of July celebrations. Douglass accepted their invitation.

In his speech, however, Douglass delivered a scathing attack on the hypocrisy of a nation celebrating freedom and independence with speeches, parades and platitudes, while, within its borders, nearly four million humans were being kept as slaves.

What, then, remains to be argued? Is it that slavery is not divine; that God did not establish it; that our doctors of divinity are mistaken? There is blasphemy in the thought. That which is inhuman cannot be divine. Who can reason on such a proposition? They that can, may – I cannot. The time for such argument is past.

At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. Oh! had I the ability, and could I reach the nation’s ear, I would today pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke. For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed; and its crimes against God and man must be denounced. ..

There is not a nation of the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States at this very hour. Go search where you will, roam through all the monarchies and despotisms of the Old World, travel through South America, search out every abuse and when you have found the last, lay your facts by the side of the everyday practices of this nation, and you will say with me that, for revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a rival.

Such Passion, I am so motivated… the war has ended …

I am old now, as I look back on my life I am gripped but for the cost slavery has been in our great land. A land founded to glorify God, and based on “freedom for all.” God has a way of holding us to our statements.

The human cost of the war far exceeded what anyone had imagined in 1861. The North placed roughly 2.2 million men in uniform (180,000 of them blacks), of whom about 640,000 were killed, wounded in battle, or died of disease. Of the 360,000 Northern soldiers who died, two-thirds perished from illnesses such as dysentery, diarrhea, measles, malaria, and typhoid. Casualties in Confederate forces are more difficult to estimate, but they probably approached 450,000 out of approximately 750,000 to 850,000 Confederate soldiers. Of these, it is estimated that more than 250,000 died. The proportion of battlefield deaths to deaths by disease was probably the same as in the Northern armies. Total deaths thus exceeded 600,000, and the dead and wounded combined totaled about 1.1 million. More Americans were killed in the Civil War than in all other American wars combined from the colonial period through the later phase of the Vietnam War (1959-1975). Reflecting on the war, although not really fought over slavery, the burning issue of the slave’s personhood impacted many- even great generals.

When northern newspapers ran stories of General Robert E. Lee’s supposedly having runaways soundly flogged at the Arlington House plantation on the eve of the war it made him unhappy but there was nothing he could do, save complain to his son, Custis. “The N. Y. Tribune has attacked me for my treatment of your grandfather’s slaves, but I shall not reply. He has left me an unpleasant legacy.”

Lee’s stated views on slavery are well-known, having been set out in correspondence and post-war interviews. Reflecting the prevailing aristocratic and Christian values of his class, the following passage, written to his wife in December 1856, reveals his attitude:

There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil. It is idle to expatiate on its disadvantages. I think it is a greater evil to the white than to the colored race. While my feelings are strongly enlisted in behalf of the latter, my sympathies are more deeply engaged for the former. The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, physically, and socially. The painful discipline they are undergoing is necessary for their further instruction as a race, and will prepare them, I hope, for better things. How long their servitude may be necessary is known and ordered by a merciful Providence. Their emancipation will sooner result from the mild and melting influences of Christianity than from the storm and tempest of fiery controversy. This influence, though slow, is sure. The doctrines and miracles of our Saviour have required nearly two thousand years to convert but a small portion of the human race, and even among Christian nations what gross errors still exist! While we see the course of the final abolition of human slavery is still onward, and give it the aid of our prayers, let us leave the progress as well as the results in the hands of Him who, chooses to work by slow influences, and with whom a thousand years are but as a single day.”

But, after the war, General Lee somberly stated, “So far, from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interests of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this, as regards Virginia especially, that I would cheerfully have lost all I have lost by the war, and have suffered all I have suffered, to have this object attained.” This he said with much earnestness.(SOURCE: Lee Family Digital Archive)

For me, I see the war as judgment on our nation by God for slavery, and I am not alone on this matter:

In “Slavery and the Civil War as viewed by the Churches of God“, 1845-1865” Don Corbin writes,

That the unparalleled sacrifice of life and treasure in the present civil war for the overthrow of the slaveholder’s rebellion and for the restoration of the national authority in all states of this Union is obviously in our opinion the result of God’s judgments upon us for our wickedness. This same reasoning is very plainly expressed in the editor of the Advocate’s statement, “Why has all this trouble come upon us? We fear that the true answer to this question is, that because of our sinfulness as a nation, God has permitted this scourge to fall upon us. Our condition as such, should induce us to confess and implore Divine mercy and interposition in our behalf, and we hope such is the feeling of the friends of peace and religion everywhere.” It is easy to see that the Church felt that the Civil War was God’s punishment upon them as a Church and nation for their grave sin of slaveholding.

And in “Sermons, Speeches, and Letters on Slavery and its war ” – The National Midnight , A sermon preached at Westfield , MA November 16,1856 on the occasion of the election of James Buchanan to the Presidency of the United States 1869 : Gilbert Haven laments,

How horrible our sin ! How more horrible will be our punishment!

What has caused this defeat! Why did not truth and right prevail? Why did we not win? Because there was no deep repentance of the real cause of their shames and crimes, and no true sympathy with their chief victims. The cause is slavery; the real victim is the slave. .. We have had no tears for the slave. His fate has not been the battle-cry of any party.

Yes, the cost of maintaining the status quo affected every person. It touched their lives, split their churches, made widows and orphans of their communities and forced the world as we know it to change forever. The cost was so great for a nation so indifferent, a nation God called to repentance, a cost that never had to be paid if not for our stubborn and apathetic response to the evils of slavery.

In 1862 Samuel and Julia Howe were invited to Washington by President Lincoln. The Howes visited a Union Army camp in Virginia across the Potomac. There, they heard the men singing the song which had been sung by both North and South, one in admiration of John Brown, one in celebration of his death: “John Brown’s body lies a’mouldering in his grave.”

A clergyman in the party, James Freeman Clarke, who knew of Julia’s published poems, urged her to write a new song for the war effort to replace “John Brown’s Body.” She described the events later:
I replied that I had often wished to do so…. n spite of the excitement of the day I went to bed and slept as usual, but awoke the next morning in the gray of the early dawn, and to my astonishment found that the wished-for lines were arranging themselves in my brain. I lay quite still until the last verse had completed itself in my thoughts, then hastily arose, saying to myself, I shall lose this if I don’t write it down immediately. I searched for an old sheet of paper and an old stub of a pen which I had had the night before, and began to scrawl the lines almost without looking, as I learned to do by often scratching down verses in the darkened room when my little children were sleeping. When this nation endured the darkness of slavery, few good men and women said “NO“. They were the persecuted voices in their day – shouting against the evils of slavery to a nation whose very economy was based on the stripes of the black man. They were voiceless in Congress, the media, and even in many of the churches. Though few in numbers, they converted whom they could: one convert at a time. How could they face down an industry that enslaved millions with a handful of “radicals” freeing only a few men and women from the bondage of slavery? The great abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison wrote this in “The Liberator”, an abolitionist newspaper he created because he had been censored from the regular press. January 1, 1831:

I am aware, that many object to the severity of my language; but is there not cause for severity? I will be as harsh as truth, and as uncompromising as justice. On this subject, I do not wish to think, or speak, or write, with moderation. No! no! Tell a man whose house is on fire, to give a moderate alarm; tell him to moderately rescue his wife from the hand of the ravisher; tell the mother to gradually extricate her babe from the fire into which it has fallen; — but urge me not to use moderation in a cause like the present. I am in earnest — I will not equivocate — I will not excuse — I will not retreat a single inch — AND I WILL BE HEARD.”

Though victory seemed grim, they fought on, unsure of the results: freedom was worth the risk and victory finally came.

Thomas J “Stonewall” Jackson is one of the most famous American Generals of all time, got his fame by fighting for the South in the American Civil War; he was very religious and thought to be a bit odd at times by his men. Jackson was heard telling his men, “My religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to always be ready, no matter when it may overtake me.” With that in mind, General Jackson faced the battle with faith in God, sworn to his duty he was assured that God held his days in His able hands. “Look at Jackson standing there like a stone wall,” was the sentence that gave birth to his historic nickname.Jackson died from friendly fire on the battlefield.

As the Revolutionary War, Slavery, and the Civil War among others teach us, there have been dark times in American History before. The Bible itself is full of inspirational stories where the righteous was outnumbered and the battle looked bleak. For Example: David watched as the Israeli army backed off as Goliath mocked the Living God. Outraged that one man could cause such fear, David chose to march on trusting that His God was larger and greater than any earthly giant. David took a risk and stepped onto the battlefield alone but God showed up along side of him and the giant was silenced.

Thinking he was the only prophet of the Most High left, Elijah faced down 450 prophets of Baal , “You have abandoned the LORD’s commands and have followed the Baals. ” Elijah told Ahab, “Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.” 1 Kings 18

Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the LORD’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. Get two bulls for us. Let them choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire—he is God.

Elijah – took a risk and GOD SHOWED UP! He put the false god’s of Baal to shame.

Esther was a young beautiful woman who was launched into the King’s chamber as Queen when he saw her beauty. But then her uncle sent word to her that the King had been tricked into signing a decree to massacre all of “her people, the Jews.” He spoke these words to her, “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14)

Esther took a risk and went into see her King. She could have died in that attempt, but she believed the words of her Uncle that she had been sent to that position “for such a time as this.” She took a risk, and God saved her people.

In a little town a young woman was greeted by an angel, “Mary – you are great among women.” Told by the angel that she would bear a son, Mary trembled because she knew the consequences to pregnancy outside of marriage. Choosing instead to believe the words of God through His messenger, Mary replied, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38) Mary accepted that risk and the Lord literally showed up!

As we look out among this nation, many of us are battle torn and worn out. We are witnessing perhaps the death of America’s Freedom and Greatness. The prospect of that outcome has caused many to give-up, many to loose hope. But, we are not a people who should be motivated by what we “see” with earthly eyes. We are a people of Hope and a people who serve a Great God. Perhaps we have been spoiled by a sense of “freedom” few of us have ever been called upon to “defend”. Perhaps some of us have sat on the sidelines while others fought for us. Whatever the cause, we are where we are, and nothing happens outside of God’s vision. If America is seeing her last great days, so be it. I, for one, intend to stay in this battle to the end. I intend to fight on, not because victory has been promised. Precisely the opposite. I fight because it is right. I stand because I believe in truth and in God’s Word. I speak and defend the innocent because God commands me to. I am a patriotic American, but my last and final hope is not of this world, but of that world to come. If I can make a difference here on earth, great. “Maafa 21” The Undeniable Truth about Eugenics and Genocide that is Awakening America’s Sleeping Black Giant

For the record, it is far less intriguing to me that William Shakespeare describes what I call refusing to live in denial as a “divine instinct that causes man’s mind to distrust ensuing dangers”; than it is to try to understand the reasons we so often do it, even when the ensuing dangers are as obvious as waters swelling before a horrible storm (remember those who didn’t run from Hurricane Katrina).

If God, as Shakespeare contends, has truly given us a divine instinct of caution when we perceive coming dangers, how then could a movement to control or eliminate the population of an entire race of people in America, using the same methods and espousing the same eugenics ideology that produced the Third Reich, remain so inadequately challenged by American people of good conscience; especially those who were targeted to become the primary victims – African Americans?

During the past 20 years of my personal and organizational involvement in the efforts to stop abortion and sound alarms about its racist intent that would ring loud enough to awaken America’s sleeping black giant, I often experienced a crippling frustration when encountering an inexplicable level of apathy from the black community, even when they were presented with what I thought was solid evidence that proved abortion to be racist and the most evil thing perpetrated against us since slavery.

Reciting facts such as “abortion is the leading cause of death in the black community,” and “black women are three times more likely to be sold an abortion than her white counterpart” didn’t seem adequate to break through the veneer that covered the eyes of black liberals and caused them to view abortion as more a basic right than an instrument of racist evil. To be honest, I began to give up hope that anything we could present would ever be enough to break through the deep-rooted skepticism that was manifesting itself in illogical political alliances between perpetrators and victims in defense of legalized abortion. Until I saw Maafa 21.

Maafa 21 is the explosive documentary, produced by Mark Crutcher and Life Dynamics of Denton, Texas, that I believe will be the game changer in the national discussion on legalized abortion in America and its racist origins, as well as the unpardonable compromises made by those who knew the horrible truth but chose to turn a blind eye to the murder and mistreatment of millions of African Americans over the past 150 years for the sake of economic and political expediency.

The movie is all over the internet, and is currently being shown by private citizens and organizations all over the country, on screens and for audiences both large and small, and is causing a response of outrage that is unprecedented. It looks as though the sleeping black giant is finally waking up, and he looks very angry.

From coast to coast the reports are coming in saying that Maafa 21 is having a phenomenal impact – even on those who considered themselves pro-choice – because it goes beyond the opinionated rhetoric that is so prevalent on both sides of the issue and establishes fact, using direct quotes and recordings that are undeniable and unimpeachable even for the most ardent abortion apologist.

I am convinced that this historic documentary is the smoking gun that will prove beyond all reasonable doubt that slavery and abortion are not only born of the same evil but are in fact opposite sides of the same evil coin.

Maafa 21 is about eugenics, elitism and well-hidden racial agendas. It’s about treachery and corruption at the highest levels of political and corporate America. Maafa 21 lays out in undeniable detail the devious plans that this nation’s white elites – firmly ensconced in the upper echelons of both political and industrial privilege – chose to embrace as the solution to the enormous Negro dilemma that followed the emancipation of the American slaves.

The word Maafa is a Swahili term used to describe the period of time during which Africans were hunted, shackled and enslaved for the convenience of those who presumed a right to determine their worth as humans and control how their lives should be disposed. Adding the 21, as explained by Mark Crutcher, indicates that the same practice continues even today as we advance into the 21 century. Basically, the same racist motives and justifications still exist in the hearts of American elites; they have simply selected a new method to reach their desired outcome.

To the early American elites, slaves were an asset as long as they remained slaves, but after being set free they would become a liability that would affect the economic viability of not only the South but of the entire nation. Every facet of American commerce was invested in slavery – from the cotton fields to the banks – and the release of millions of uneducated and unemployable people who were viewed as less than human was going to create a huge financial burden on many Americans who were not remotely interested in bearing it. “So, what are we going to do with all these sub-humans after we give them their freedom?” was an overwhelming concern. Something had to be done or the weight of the slaves release into society as free men would break the bank, swell the prisons and jeopardized the harmony of American society. Maafa 21 illustrates how disastrous it was to entrust the people who sought to keep slaves permanently in shackles with the responsible of planning for their freedom?

The great Fredrick Douglass is quoted as saying: “What shall be done with the 4 million slaves if they are emancipated? This question has been answered and can be answered in many ways. Primarily, it is a question less for man than for God; less for human intellect than for the laws of nature to solve. Our answer is, do nothing with them. Mind your business and let them mind theirs. Your doing with them is their greatest misfortune. They have been undone by your doings and all they now ask and really have need of at your hands is just to let them alone.”

Unfortunately, Mr. Douglass’ recommendation went unheeded and this nation set clumsily about to solve its Negro dilemma in a federally funded but unworkable effort called colonization to send the slaves back to Africa. When colonization proved to be impracticable, the new philosophy of eugenics that was rearing its monstrous head around the world appeared to be a perfectly acceptable solution to dealing with those who were deemed by the elitist as undesirable; weeds in a bed of roses that needed to be extracted. Eugenics was the answer then, and for some remains the answer today.

Eugenics is a term created by Sir Francis Galton (a cousin of evolutionist Charles Darwin) but derived its meaning from the Greek term that translates “good birth.” Quite literally, eugenics is the study and practice of selective breeding applied to humans, with the aim of improving the species.

The end of slavery did not represent an opportunity to the likes of Mr. Galton to discover and accept the equal humanity of the former slaves and to improve their state by permitting them to be educated and prepared to assimilate into mainstream society. Instead, they viewed the release of these “African inferiors” as an unwelcome challenge to civilized white society and to how it would protect itself from being polluted and degraded by those who they believed were unfit to live among those with whom they were not equal.

In Maafa 21, Mr. Galton is quoted as saying, “I do not join in the belief that the African is our equal in brain or in heart…average Negroes possess too little intellect, self-reliance and self-control to make it possible for them to sustain the burden of any respectable form of civilization without a large measure of external guidance and support.”

Maafa 21 presents numerous examples like the previous to support its claim that the type of sick and invidious thinking that motivated Galton, Darwin, and other racist elites to launch a movement designed to control black population, which has proven to be no less than a genocide, did not die when they died, but was rather a legacy that was embraced by others who followed in their footsteps, the most notables being Adolph Hitler and Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger and continues even to this day.

The proof of this has become almost undeniable, but yet there are still many today that when faced with these well proven facts find it hard to suspend their disbelief and accept the fact that this type of racism still exist and continues to fuel the modern eugenics movement that has been represented in everything from lynching, unlawful sterilization of unsuspecting black women, to legalized abortion.

Since the end of slavery, untold thousands of blacks have been murdered and brutally done away with – both legally and illegally – through the various tools of eugenics and yet the minds of many in the black community remained resistant to the belief that at some point in our history men conspired to determine ways to control and/or eliminate black populations that were no longer useful to them and then went about the business to implement them.

Philosopher Frederik Kerling said, “When people refuse to see proof, they think their belief helps them so much that losing it will cost more then they gain from a perhaps more truthful story.”

It’s as if it was to unthinkable to believe that the neighbor who volunteers for Planned Parenthood or the favored politician who supports abortion under the guise of protecting women’s rights could be so evil as to endorse what they know to be legalized genocide. Indeed that may be the case. Not all pro-choice people are avowed racists.

In Maafa 21, Pastor Clenard Childress, a long time pro-life leader and Director of The Life Education and Resource Network (L.E.A.R.N), is quoted as saying, “the eugenics movement wasn’t invented by everyday average white Americans but by a select group of wealthy white elites that had often used this ideology to pit all of white America against black America and we see that that is the case even to this day. ….”

Perhaps this explains why it was taking so long for thinking people to connect the dots that linked slavery and abortion together as evil twins – Siamese twins even – that many pro-life pioneers believed were too obvious to miss. I had supposed that either we were just totally inept in the way we tried to carry the message – and there’s probably a lot of truth to that – or that people were so totally committed to believing that nothing we could ever have presented to them would be enough to break through the well sold notion that abortion was a good and not an evil. There is obviously a lot of truth to that as well.

Planned Parenthood and others have invested greatly in making numbers prove what cannot be proved in the collective hearts of the good American people. Time after time they have tried to bamboozle people into believing that a majority of Americans are in favor of legalized abortion when they are not, and that abortion and other so-called medical services they provide have been beneficial to women, which they haven’t.

Maafa 21 lays out in specific detail the callous and deceitful brilliance of those who had the task of getting rid of an entire race of people by convincing them that the tools that would be used in killing them off were good and merciful for them, causing them to literally fight for a right to their own destruction.

Shakespeare wrote, “When clouds appear, wise men put on their cloaks; when great leaves fall, the winter is at hand; when the sun sets, who doth not look for night?”

That makes sense to me. I get that very clearly and I’ve always believed that when black America realized that this so-called right that had been given to us (was so clearly designed to bring death to us) we would assume that the persons instituting and justifying it had our demise as their primary motive.

I believe that message is now clearly resonating throughout the black community and it is causing a great disturbance in their hearts as they realize the duplicitous motivations of those who smiled in our faces while sticking knives in our backs. Maafa 21 points out that there is enough blame to go around. It crosses political lines, generational lines and even economic lines and paints all of those who turned their backs on the horrible facts they saw as unworthy of the public trust.

The giant is waking up. It’s about time!
