Ezekiel Emanuel on stem cell reseach, “fifty percent of the time it is capable of developing into a baby”

Ezekiel Emanuel, head of the Department of Bioethics at The Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health, spoke from the Paepcke Auditorium on August 1, 2009 as part of the Aspen Institute’s McCloskey Speaker Series. Emanuel is on extended detail as a special advisor for health policy to the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget.

I would think it’s would be a bad thing for us to treat the embryo if it is just somehow the same as just skin cells. It’s obviously got special significance, because in the normal of advance it will not 100% of the time, actually in most bodies probably just about fifty percent of the time it is capable of developing into a baby. So there’s something special about it, but that is clearly mostly potential and not actual. There’s lots of things that can go wrong along the process – so we want to treat it in a very special manner and not treat it cavalierly. And I think part of what our society is having difficulty about and it’s not surprising is what does that mean. What does it mean to treat it with respect and dignity but not in the same way as we treat babies in full and adults and people like that.”
