Do Tennessee abortion clinics operate in the dark like Gosnell’s House of Horrors clinic?

Pro-lifers in Tennessee are working to pass Amendment 1 which would require inspections of abortion clinics.

Amendment 1 would give the state legislature more power to regulate abortion in Tennessee, essentially putting the state in line with what’s allowable under federal law.

In 2012, a conversation was captured on video between a lawmaker and a Tennessee Department of Health representative which explains why the Amendment is needed.

Tennessee legislator Joey Hensley, a licensed physician, discussed the lack of abortion facility regulations with the Assistant Commissioner from the Tennessee Department of Health and her answers were stunning.

She admited that the Department of Health has no enforcement ability to require abortion clinics to report to the state.

This sounds eerily similar to what took place in Pennsylvania when Kermit Gosnell’s House of Horrors abortion clinic was allowed to operate without any state inspections for years.

After operating for years, in the early 1990’s the Pennsylvania Department of Health instituted a policy of inspecting abortion clinics only when there was a complaint.

After Gov. Tom Ridge, who supported abortion rights, was elected, the state Department of Health stopped inspecting abortion clinics.

According to a grand jury investigation, “Officials concluded that inspections would be ‘putting a barrier up to women’ seeking abortions” and decided “to leave clinics to do as they pleased.” That practice continued under Gov. Mark Schweiker and Gov. Ed Rendell. It was not until after a drug raid in February 2010 at Gosnell’s clinic that the Health Department resumed regular abortion clinic inspections.

Less than a year later, eight charges of homicide for killing seven newborns and one female patient was brought against the abortion doctor. Various additional charges were brought against members of Gosnell’s staff. He was eventually convicted and is serving time in prison.

Do Tennessee abortion clinics operate in the dark like Gosnell’s House of Horrors clinic?

In the video conversation with the Tennessee Department of Health representative, she admits to lawmaker Joey Hensley, that when it comes to abortion clinics reporting to the state there is no teeth in current law to require them to comply.

TN Amendment 1 Vid

Hensley asks the Tennessee Department of Health representative, “You require presently everyone who performs an abortion to report to the state?”

She replies, “Correct.”

Hensley asks, “How do you enforce that requirement?”

SILENCE….. Then……Her response, “I’m not exactly sure how we enforce that.”

Hensley asks, “How do you enforce that? Do you check the abortion clinics and check their records and see if they have actually reported this information?”

She replies, “No sir, it’s not quite that active from our department.”

Hensley, “So you just ask ’em to and assume?”

She says, “We let them know a couple times a year that they’re supposed to be reporting this information to the Department of Health.”

Hensley, “So that all you do? And then just- you assume that they report it?”

What she says next says it all, “It doesn’t have any teeth in the law for us to force them to report to us.”

You can watch the conversation here:

To show how dangerous abortion clinics are to women, advocates of Amendment 1 released this video which containes actual audio of a 911 call from an abortion facility.

During the call a staffer, from The Women’s Center abortion clinic, operated by Dr. Gary Boyle, directs other unidentified personnel where to find medication, and provides the following details to the 911 dispatcher.

911: “Tell me exactly what happened…”

WC Staff: “She started coughing and she quit breathing….”

911: “Is she breathing?”

WC Staff: “Uh, some”

WC Staff: “She just started having a coughing fit and maybe had quit breathing at one point.”

911: “Is her breathing completely normal?

WC Staff: “Now? No.”

911: “And is she completely alert?”

WC Staff: “No.”

911: “Is she changing color?”

WC Staff: “Yes….She just looks ashen, she’s a black woman…”

911: “Does she have any abdominal pain?”

WC Staff: “Uh, I’m sure she does, she’s in the middle of getting an abortion.”

“Tennessee requires no health inspection of abortion facilities, has no informed consent and no waiting periods for abortion. Amendment 1 does not overturn Roe vs. Wade like the amendment’s opponents would have you believe. I wish it did. However, Amendment 1 does bring Tennessee back up to a standard equal to all the surrounding states by legally providing a safer environment for women who do choose to abort their babies,” said Randy C. Davis, executive director/treasurer of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, a group of more than 3,200 cooperating Baptist churches, and an advocate of Amendment 1.

Voters in the state will cast their final decision on the amendment November 4th.

Blogger Jill Stanek recently received an interesting tip from a woman she will call LOLA (to protect her identity) who claimed she was a former Planned Parenthood employee, trying to protect women from an unsanitary Planned Parenthood office.

Lola was allegedly employed by the Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Planned Parenthood clinic but recently quit in disgust. That location is operated by Operated by: Planned Parenthood Keystone

In an e-mailed message to Stanek, Lola wries, “We read your stuff and thought you were all crazy,” Lola said. “But not any more.” Lola and I have now spoken a few times by phone. She also sent me pictures she took before she left. The Stroudsburg clinic doesn’t commit abortions. Lola concluded this is why it fell to the bottom of the upkeep pile. “Every single one of our chairs is stained with blood or vaginal secretions,” Lola continued. “The Department of Health mandated that PP abortion sites have waiting room chairs that are nonpermeable, so this wouldn’t be a problem. Is the Department aware PP’s nonabortion centers still have the upholstered chairs? We asked multiple times for nonpermeable chairs but were told it wasn’t in the budget. Patients sometimes sat on the floor rather than on infected chairs.”

“It gets worse,” Lola continued. “One of our two exam tables was contaminated with blood, secretions, and infectious waste – for years. Despite cleaning the table after every exam, the foam underneath was soaked due to the tear, a making it a sponge for the spread of infectious diseases, since our facility did STD, Hepatitis, and HIV testing. Corporate refused to repair or replace the table until our clinician threatened a work stoppage, because this was such a gross health violation. Realizing they were going to lose big money, corporate finally had someone come and reupholster it.”

This spells similar to the accusations against a Delaware Planned Parenthood only a few months ago:

Planned Parenthood of Del. Under Investigation

PPDE Wilmington SIGN

A Planned Parenthood facility in Wilmington is under fire following new accusations from three former employees.

MelodyMeanor2Melody Meanor

Former manager Melody Meanor and former nurses Joyce Vasikonis and Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich claim that the Planned Parenthood clinic located on Shipley Street in Wilmington is unprofessional, under-trained and unsafe.

“Women are exposed to potential infection of any kind you can imagine that can be passed from one patient to another,” Vasikonis said.

The women claimed the privacy of patients was jeopardized, that they were asked to falsify employee records, that medical assistants were poorly trained and that certain women in need of certain medications after abortions often didn’t receive them. They also claimed that the facility failed to inform up to 200 women that they tested positive for gonorrhea and chlamydia, according to Delaware Online.

All three nurses maintained that they are pro-choice and believe in the national mission of Planned Parenthood. They also believe however that the Wilmington clinic is putting the lives of women at risk.

PPDE OSHA

OSHA previously issued several citations against the clinic and the State Health Department found violations during an inspection. However, the Department allowed the clinic to stay open, satisfied with its attempts to make things right. The former employees however, don’t believe the state is looking close enough.

“I believe that Planned Parenthood should be fined and closed until all dangers are addressed,” Werbrich said. “Again, I’m going to state, I am pro-choice.”

Jayne PPDE

Former Planned Parenthood of Delaware employee , Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich, worked as a registered nurse at Planned Parenthood in 2012. She calls them “startling similarities between Planned Parenthood and Gosnell.

Dr. Gosnell was notorious in the Philadelphia/ Wilmington area – he ran a filthy clinic and was convicted of murder after performing late term abortions where babies were born alive and killed. I was not aware of such horrifying happenings at Planned Parenthood of Delaware The similarity between the case of Kermit Gosnell and Planned Parenthood of Delaware is that they both operated extremely hazardous abortion clinics, and that their respective states refused to close them despite the repeated warnings. I believe that Planned Parenthood should be fined and closed until all dangers are addressed.”

State to inspect abortion clinic recommended by Planned Parenthood staffer to journalist posing as sex trafficker

State officials to investigate abortion clinic
Thursday, February 10, 2011

BY MIKE CURLEY

englewood — The state Department of Health and Senior Services is planning to investigate Metropolitan Medical Associates, an abortion clinic in the city, after a Planned Parenthood staffer recommended it to an undercover filmmaker as a good place to have underage prostitutes treated.

In the video, made by Live Action Films, a youth-led antiabortion organization, a man and a woman in the guise of a pimp and a prostitute go to the Perth Amboy Planned Parenthood Central New Jersey facility and ask for advice from Amy Woodruff, who told them of the Englewood facility, “their protocols aren’t as strict as ours and they don’t get audited the same way that we do,” according to the video. Woodruff was fired after the video appeared on the Internet.

A Department of Health and Senior Services spokeswoman, Donna Leusner, confirmed that the department is planning to conduct a review of Metropolitan Medical Associates. The review will include an examination of patient medical records, interviews with the staff and observation of facilities and procedures to make sure they’re in compliance with state regulations.
Leusner said the review would culminate in a written report and that the department would not discuss its findings until then. The investigation could take several weeks, she said, depending on the findings and the extensiveness of the records being reviewed.

This will not be the first time the facility has come under state scrutiny. In 2007, it was ordered closed by the state after an investigation of a complaint filed by Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. A woman who had an abortion performed at the facility was put into a coma following the procedure and had to have her uterus removed.

The 2007 investigation found dirty and rusted equipment and dirt and debris underneath an examination table, according to The Record. The woman, a Newark resident, settled with the facility for $1.9 million in 2009. The facility was allowed to reopen in March 2007.
