How many women died from illegal abortions prior to Roe v. Wade?

Pro-abortion professor testifies against Heartbeat Bill using bogus, debunked abortion statistics

Prior to the legalization of abortion, those who sought to legally end the lives of preborn children falsely marketed their position by claiming that women were dying by the thousands (and even millions) from illegal abortions. However, there is absolutely no evidence to back up those figures.

Despite this, those figures continue to be repeated by abortion advocates any time they sense that the so-called “right” to abortion is potentially in jeopardy.

A pro-abortion professor, testifying under oath before Congress, unfortunately used these disputed and highly suspect statistics regarding the number of women who died from illegal abortions in an effort to oppose the federal pro-life Heartbeat bill, HR490, which proposes to stop abortions at a point when it can be documented that the preborn child’s heartbeat can be detected:

Prof Priscilla Smith testifies HR490 Heartbeat abortion bill

In her testimonyProfessor Priscilla Smith claimed that 5,000 women died annually from illegal abortions prior to Roe v. Wade:

Women have been obtaining abortions since the beginning of time, before Roe when abortions were illegal… An estimated 1.2 million women each year still resorted to illegal abortion in the US. As many as 5000 of these women — already born – living, breathing, lungs working, hearts beating, women, many with children at home who depended on them — 5,000 of them died each year as a result of illegal abortions and many more were severely injured. This is the world we would return to if HR490 went into effect….

But the facts don’t agree with Smith’s claims. A 1975 report by National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, entitled, “Legalized Abortion and the Public Health: Report of a Study,” disputes these statistics (emphasis added):

It is difficult to find credible estimates of the number of deaths associated with illegal abortion. One estimate, which has been frequently quoted, is between 5,000 and 10,000 deaths per year. That is hardly plausible, considering that the total number of deaths of women aged 15-44 from all causes in the United States is approximately 50,000 annually, and the total number of deaths due to abortion reported by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has been below 500 since 1958 and below 100 since 1971.

The 5,000 figure originates from a piecemeal of several sources based largely on assumptions, and comes straight from the largest abortion lobby group in the nation: National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL.)  NARAL’s footnote quotes from a source that allegedly “discussed Dr. Christopher Tietze’s estimate of nearly 8,000 deaths from illegal abortion annually in the United States.” The truth is that Tietze disputed the 5,000 to 10,000 number, as did records of maternal deaths reviewed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the years just prior to national legalization.

NARAL Footnotes on illegal abortion deaths

In fact, in Lawrence Lader’s book “Abortion,” also sourced, he clearly states, “Tietze places the figure nearer 1,000.” But, as Dr. John C. Willke explains in the video below, that trend decreased over time:

Tietze was a senior consultant to the Center for Policy Studies of the Population Council, a radical organization founded by John D. Rockefeller III. That organization’s second president was Frederic Osborn, a founding member of the American Eugenics Society who signed Margaret Sanger’s “Citizens Committee for Planned Parenthood,” published in her review in April of 1938. (Osborn may have coined Planned Parenthood’s “Every Child a Wanted Child” slogan, and once wrote, “Eugenic goals are most likely attained under a name other than eugenics.”)

In 1967, Dr. Tietze, who was speaking at a conference on abortion sponsored by the Harvard Divinity School and Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, called the 5,000 illegal abortion deaths, “unmitigated nonsense,” according to a September 13, 1967 article in the Berkshire Eagle.  The paper went on to give substantially fewer numbers by Tietze, writing, “The known deaths attributed to abortion in 1964 were 247 and he thinks it is fairly safe to estimate that the real figure may be double that, even a little more, but certainly no more than a thousand.” Note that Dr. Tietze was no pro-lifer: In 1973, he was awarded Planned Parenthood’s infamousMargaret Sanger Award, named after a eugenicist who gave at least one speech to the Ku Klux Klan.

The Kingsport News reported on that same conference, pointing out that Tietze disputed the reported illegal abortion totals, which some claimed ranged from 200,000 to 1.2 million annually. The paper quotes Tietze as saying, “we have no real basis for guessing which extreme is closer to the truth.”

Tietze disputes illegal abortion deaths, 1967

Tietze, who favored abortion on demand, also opined that legalizing abortion would “not have a big impact on mortality.”

The Register, a Virginia paper, notes in its article entitled, “Supporters of Liberal Abortion Laws use Inflated Statistics, Expert says,” that Tietze suggested that the larger numbers (5,000 to 10,000) were made up to scare politicians into legalizing abortion. “The higher estimates are made by people who feel in order to raise sympathy for liberalized abortion laws they have to make people afraid.”

Tietze was right.

Dr. Bernard Nathanson, one of the early founders of NARAL (then known as the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws), revealed that he and his colleagues fabricated the large numbers of deaths from illegal abortion in an attempt to sway public opinion toward making abortion legal.

In his book, “The Abortion Papers,” Dr. Nathanson admitted that the 5,000 to 10,000 figure which was fed “to the public and the media in the late 1960’s,” was fabricated because it was a “nice, round, shocking figure.” And, just like they do today, the media — willingly and with no documentation — repeated that figure with no demand for proof.

However, there was data available, and it didn’t support those fabricated figures.

On October 19, 1959, Mary S. Calderone, a medical director of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, presented a paper before the Maternal and Child Health Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA) at the Eighty-Seventh Annual Meeting in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where she also gave far fewer numbers than Professor Smith:

In 1957 there were only 260 deaths in the whole country attributed to abortions of any kind. In New York City in 1921 there were 144 abortion deaths, in 1951 there were only 15; and, while the abortion death rate was going down so strikingly in that 30-year period, we know what happened to the population and the birth rate.

In 1967, New York Assemblyman, Albert Blumenthal, who sponsored a law to legalize abortion that year, was quoted by the media as claiming that between 35 and 60 deaths from illegal abortions were reported in New York City annually. That same year, an Illinois Health Director by the name of Dr. Herbert Ratner called the 5,000 to 10,000 figure “outlandish,” noting, “This hardly leaves room for deaths from other causes.”

1967 article Illegal abortion Chicago Tribune

Dr. Ratner also correctly warned that the liberalization of abortion, which he called “exterminative medicine,” would start a dangerous trend in medicine — a prophetic insight America has sadly seen come true.

By 1969, the very first abortion surveillance report was published by the Centers for Disease Control, noting a “lack of accurate incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality data” on abortion. At that time, five states had passed abortion legislation and 24 others had bills under review. According to this same CDC report, in 1966, the National Center for Health Statistics reported 189 maternal deaths from abortion complications.  And, while no one would diminish those numbers, they are a far cry from the 5,000 touted by Professor Smith.

By 1970, the CDC reported that in just a six month period (July to December), out of sixteen reported abortions in New York City, eight women — yes, HALF — had died from legal (not illegal) abortions. In total, the 1970 report states that 25 women died in New York City (where abortion had been liberalized), and eleven of those were from illegal abortions. The report also noted that Black and Puerto Rican women suffered higher legal abortion mortality rates.

According to that CDC document, “although there was substitution of legal for illegal abortion deaths, no significant decrease in total abortion mortality occurred following institution of the new law….”

CDC Abortion Deaths, 1970

In 1972, the year prior to national legalization, CDC reports revealed that deaths from illegal abortion were nothing close to Professor Smith’s 5,000 figure. In this table from the CDC report (shown below), just 39 women died from illegal abortion in 1972 while 24 died from legal abortion.

CDC Abortion deaths 1972 to 1990

Live Action News previously documented that the majority of illegal abortions were performed by physicians, and many of those same doctors went on to perform legal abortions, some of whom have seriously injured and even killed women. But, today, instead of protecting the women who are being butchered or are dying from legal abortion, advocates like Professor Smith spew made up numbers from the illegal abortion days.

It would appear that abortion advocates do not actually care about the safety of women or even about real statistics; they care only about legalizing abortion at any cost.

Planned Parenthood’s talking points on 20-week abortions are not to be trusted

Now that Congress is looking at a bill that would prohibit abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy, we can expect that abortion profiteer Planned Parenthood and its allies will begin the push to disseminate a lot of misinformation.

It is important to note, first and foremost, that despite the often-repeated lie that abortions after 20 weeks are only committed for reasons’ of women’s “health,” reasons, Planned Parenthood actually considers all abortions legitimate, for any reason whatsoever, calling every abortion (including late-term ones) “medically necessary.”

But if late-term abortions are truly only done for health reasons, why is there no mention of this on Planned Parenthood’s own website when listing abortion services up to 24 weeks?

Several Planned Parenthood facilities in California commit abortions up to 24 weeks, the legal point of viability. One undercover video features a Planned Parenthood staffer admitting as much. In the video below, Planned Parenthood social worker Randi Coun tells a woman seeking a sex-selection abortion, “I can tell you that here at Planned Parenthood we believe that it’s not up to us to decide what is a good or a bad reason for somebody to decide to terminate a pregnancy.”

This confirms information unearthed in a court case from Alaska, in which Planned Parenthood abortionist Eric Latzman testified:

[…] an abortion is medically indicated if it will ameliorate a condition harmful to the physical or psychological health of the patient in the professional judgment of the treating physician…

He has never concluded that an abortion is other than medically indicated when a woman wishes to terminate her pregnancy.

A second Planned Parenthood abortionist, Dr. Jan Whitefield, has “never found that an abortion is other than medically indicated,” according to the court document:

His definition of medically indicated is a practical one: if a patient has a problem and an abortion will help resolve the problem, the abortion is medically indicated.

Contrary to what the public is led to believe, it is clear from previous Live Action News reports that late-term abortions are not being performed solely for health reasons. And, in several states, including New Mexico, taxpayers are funding late-term abortions (after the 20th week) done for any reason the woman desires.

While there are prohibitions on later-term abortion in some states, in others, a fully-developed, viable child can be legally aborted right up until birth. In 2013, Live Action’s undercover cameras exposed the chilling admissions of late-term abortionists committing third trimester abortions and partial-birth abortions. Although these abortionists confess to the humanity of often viable, fully developed children, they inflict inhuman and cruel abortion procedures upon them:

20 week old preborn baby

The actual number of late-term abortions committed at or after 20 weeks is unknown because there are no federal requirements to report abortion numbers, nor the gestational ages of babies that are killed. There is also no requirement that abortion providers report the reasons for those procedures.

Abortion statistics published by the Centers for Disease Control are provided to the CDC  voluntarily.

The Guttmacher Institutea former “special affiliate” and “research arm” of Planned Parenthood, gathers its abortion numbers from surveys it sends to abortion facilities; if Guttmacher fails to get a response, it may estimate numbers.

So when the abortion lobby, including Planned Parenthood, starts ratcheting up its talking points that late-term abortions are “rare” and only done for “health” reasons, keep this in mind.

In 2013, according to the CDC, only 47 reporting areas sent abortion data to the CDC, excluding five (California, Florida, Maryland, New Hampshire, and Wyoming) that either did not report, did not report by age, or did not meet reporting standards. Because reporting is not mandatory, a complete number of abortions performed in the District of Columbia and New Jersey could not be obtained. According to those 2013 figures, only 40 areas reported the gestational age at the time of the abortion.

The government agency claims that 7.1 percent of gestational age abortions reported to them were between 14 and 20 weeks and 1.3 percent were greater than 21 weeks. Let’s break this down in actual numbers:

  • less than 8 weeks: 296,781
  • 9-13 weeks: 115,268
  • 14-15 weeks: 15,188
  • 16-17 weeks: 8,484
  • 18-20 weeks: 8,150
  • 21 and greater: 5,770

This means that more than 13,000 babies were killed by abortion after the 18th week of pregnancy, in just ONE year! Again, keep in mind that several states, which have late-term abortion facilities, did not report their numbers. These figures only represented 449,641 out of the 664,435 actually reported to the CDC in 2013.

human-fetus-20-weeks

In 2013, Guttmacher published a report, claiming to detail the reasons women seek abortions after 20 weeks. In that study, authors Diana Green Foster and Katrina Kimport “estimated” that 15,000 abortions occurred annually after 20 weeks, writing, “Given an estimated 1.21 million abortions in the United States annually, more than 15,000 likely take place after 20 weeks. It is these procedures that have captured legislative attention.”

It might interest our readers to know that Katrina Kimport and Diana Greene Foster are among the faculty and staff of Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH), a group which publishes workbooks on abortion training — which they call an “all-inclusive curriculum with tools to train new abortion providers.”

Foster also sits on the board of the Later Abortion Initiative (LAI), a group with the mission of (among other things) “increas[ing] the number of sites where later abortion is available” and “expand[ing] the number of physicians who can perform later abortion, especially at 20 weeks’ gestation and beyond.” In addition, the organization’s mission also includes working with “communications, messaging and public relations experts to build support for later abortion and fight restrictions on later abortion at the state level.” Foster has been applauded by the abortion advocacy group, NARAL.

20 week old unborn child – when many states still allow abortion

Planned Parenthood publicly presents no restrictions on late-term abortions, claiming online that “Nearly 99 percent of abortions occur before 21 weeks.”  Of course, Planned Parenthood fails to note that these statistics incomplete at best, as I’ve already pointed out. The abortion corporation charges nearly $1500.00 to end the life of a preborn child between 14 and 20 weeks, according to its website.

Keep in mind that Planned Parenthood has also been caught on undercover video by the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) bargaining over prices for the body parts of aborted children, including those killed in gruesome late-term abortions.

The media has conveniently stopped mentioning the videos, because many members of the media serve as mouthpieces for Planned Parenthood’s propaganda. And Planned Parenthood continues to use its friends in the media to spread lies about how “rare” late-term abortions supposedly are.

Abortions after 20 weeks (image credit Guttmacher)

In January of 2017, Guttmacher published abortion statistics showing that 926,200 abortions were reported to them in 2014. And although abortions after 20 weeks have been a legislative issue for years, Guttmacher did not break these numbers down by specific gestation.

Instead, the organization published a graph showing that 3.8 percent of abortions reported to them were done between 16 to 20 weeks of pregnancy, while 1.3 percent were above 21 weeks.

This translates into actual babies killed as follows:

  • 16-20 weeks: approximately 35,195
  • 21 weeks and greater: approximately 12,040

We may never know how many of the 35K were performed at 20 weeks.

At 20 weeks, a preborn child has developed all of his organs and systems, and there is indication that the child can feel pain. Studies have shown that premature babies, depending on the treatment administered by the hospital, can survive outside the womb as early as 22 weeks.

Late-term abortions do not always fulfill the intended consequence of killing the baby. In fact, some abortion victims have been born alive. In 2015 alone, documents from three states indicate that ten babies may have been born alive after abortions.

Other babies have been left to die after abortion attempts.

In 2013, during testimony before the Florida House, Planned Parenthood lobbyist Alisa Lapolt Snow was asked, “If a baby is born on a table as a result of a botched abortion, what would Planned Parenthood want to have happen to that child that is struggling for life?”

Her answer shocked the nation: “We believe that any decision that’s made should be left up to the woman, her family, and the physician.”

That statement sums up Planned Parenthood’s philosophy on late-term abortions.

Mother paid abortion doc $25K to “euthanize” 36 week unborn baby

Yahoo Parenting writer Rachel Bertsche asks, “‘What Kind of Mother Is 8 Months Pregnant and Wants an Abortion?

Rachel Bertsche late term abortion Warren Hern Colorado

The question is soon answered as Bertsche recounts the story of a woman named Kate, who aborted her baby, she would later name Rose at 36 weeks because of a “brain malformation“.

Kate recounts the day she confirmed the baby’s condition:

“It was a morning appointment, and at the end of that day we met with the neurologist, who told us that our baby had Dandy-Walker malformation, the most severe presentation of the syndrome. It basically meant there were holes in her brain. She also had agenesis of the corpus callosum, which meant the bridge between the two hemispheres of her brain didn’t grow. So we had two malformations, each of which had a wide range of outcomes, but, combined, had a horrible prognosis. The doctor said, “We expect your baby to have moderate to severe mental retardation; she’s going to have moderate to severe physical disability; she is probably never going to walk or talk; she will possibly never be able to lift her head; she is going to have seizures all of the time.”

She then decides to have an abortion and writes:

It was a four-day procedure, and I had to have it done by Friday, when I would be 36 weeks pregnant. There is no doctor in the country who performs abortions after 36 weeks.”

25K abortion

Then she added, “You have to show up with $25,000.”

WOW – $25,000 to kill a human child?

Kate continued:

“So I called the Boulder Abortion Clinic in Colorado. We scheduled everything we needed to… It was a very, very difficult day. Euthanizing the baby is, obviously, a very hard thing to do. After the injection, he asked how I was feeling, and I just said, “I feel so sad. I’m going to miss her.

Warren Hern late term abortion clinic

The Boulder Abortion Clinic is operated by late term abortion doctor Warren Hern shown proudly on his website image above.

Here Kate describes the counseling and how she will euthanize her child, a term society uses to destroy animals:

“The whole first day was counseling and testing to make sure it was safe to do the procedure. They want to make sure you completely understand what is going to happen and that no one is pressuring you into the decision. At the end of the day, I signed all the paperwork, and the doctor injected the baby with a drug that, over a few hours, slowed her heart to still. It was a very, very difficult day. Euthanizing the baby is, obviously, a very hard thing to do. After the injection, he asked how I was feeling, and I just said, “I feel so sad. I’m going to miss her.”

Excerpts of Kate’s story below talk about the hours her unborn 36 week baby held onto life and the moment Kate confirmed that the hired assassin she paid had done his job :

“My husband and I went back to the hotel and I lay down until she stopped moving. I could tell when she was gone. It feels very different. The second and third days were short appointments, so we took a nice drive through the Rockies to pass the time. Then on the fourth day, they induced my labor. I got Pitocin, and it was actually a very natural birth. It was quite healing for me. I couldn’t do anything for this baby — I couldn’t fix her brain or make her well, but I could deliver her from my body. I chose to view her, so they cleaned her up and brought her in and she looked a lot like my older daughter. She was beautiful and she was whole. I got her footprints and had her cremated and they sent us her ashes in the mail a few days later. We wanted to name her after a flower, so we called her Rose.

“Ten days after we had that 35-week ultrasound, she was gone.

“Late in my pregnancy, my older daughter would say, “Mama do you have a baby in your belly?” and I would say, “Yes honey! Want to give her a kiss?” After I got home, I knew she would ask, so I waited for that moment. When it came, my daughter put her hand on my stomach and said it: “Mama, do you have a baby in your belly?” And I said, “No, honey. Baby died. Baby’s all gone.”

“I told people that the baby died and that we induced a stillbirth. I didn’t tell them I went to Colorado. I didn’t tell them the baby died because we gave her an injection.”

Such a sick and twisted story it makes me sick to my stomach to read how a mother would execute her own daughter because she was “not normal” in her eyes!

A man outside an abortion clinic says he will spare the child if protesters give him $50,000.

The man tells anti-abortion protestors that he has one child already and can’t afford to pay for another.

The protester offers to take the baby and the couple tells him they won’t “give it away.”

Man demands 50K

The man is asked if he knows he is killing a child and he replies, “yes.”

Court rules in abortion suit
Jackson couple awarded $600K in case

10:38 PM, Jan. 10, 2012

A judge on Tuesday awarded a Jackson woman and her husband $600,435 in a lawsuit arising from an abortion the woman received in 2003.
Hinds County Circuit Judge Bill Gowan awarded the money after issuing a default judgment for Daschica Thomas and her husband, Christopher Thomas, after no one showed for the scheduled Nov. 29 trial of the lawsuit.

The medical malpractice lawsuit was filed in 2005 against Dr. Joseph Booker, the then-Jackson Women’s Health Organization abortion clinic, the National Women’s Health Organization of Jackson and others.

The lawsuit alleges that Booker stopped performing the abortion shortly after starting it and said he was unable to finish it. He recommended that Thomas come back so it could be completed by another doctor. “Booker did not recommend antibiotics to her,” according to court papers. Thomas, a diabetic, began cramping and went home, but there “she continued to spot, bleed and she felt dizzy, sick and feverish.”

The abortion led to sepsis poisoning, and Thomas was in a coma for a week and half, according to the lawsuit.

“As default judgment has been entered, all factual allegations must be taken as true and if those facts establish a legal basis for recovery, plaintiff is entitled to recover,” Gowan said. “The court does find the factual allegations establish a medical malpractice action and is therefore inclined to award damages.”

Gowan awarded $500,000 in noneconomic damages to the couple, of which $100,000 goes to the husband; $19,820.83 to Thomas for lost wages and $9,700 to her husband for lost wages; $64,914.60 for Thomas’ medical bills; and $6,000 in punitive damages.

Planned Parenthood of New Hampshire’s greedy $250,000 mistake !

I thought this post in the Union Leader was of interest:

Defunded in NH: Planned Parenthood is out
Jul 3, 2011 / Union Leader

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England is an abortion provider. Largely because of that, it no longer is a recipient of a big contract from the New Hampshire taxpayers. The taxpayers owe three executive councilors a big thank-you for that.

Councilors Dave Wheeler, Ray Wieczorek and, rather surprisingly, Dan St. Hillaire voted not to contract with Planned Parenthood for community health services. The contract was worth $1.8 million. Councilors Ray Burton and, rather surprisingly, Chris Sununu voted for the contract.

Aside from its provision of abortion services, another big reason Planned Parenthood lost the contract was that its executive director makes $250,000 a year. That’s more than twice what the governor makes.

Won’t community health services be devastated? Health and Human Services Commissioner Nick Toumpas said he didn’t know what the impact would be. But the state has other options. Approved by the council on the same day were community health services contracts with 11 other service providers, including Child Health Services in Manchester. None of the 11 other providers does abortions.

Contracting with private, non-profit groups to provide necessary community health services is a good thing. Doing so without subsidizing an abortion provider is even better.
