Because a little old lady held a graphic abortion image…read to find out what happened

The debate over whether abortion victim images are effective has been going on inside the pro-life movement for years. But today, more and more proof is emerging that shows the images are having a lasting impact on society. This was never more evident than when a pro-life activist discovered why he received an invitation to speak on a college campus.

Blythe campus prolife ministry

Don Blythe refers to himself as a Christian Abolitionist, and founded At the Well Ministries. He has been involved in pro-life ministry work for over 32 years and has rescued thousands of preborn babies from the grip of death. He regularly witnesses outside abortion clinics. In addition, his Project Truth outreach has handed out tens of thousands of brochures in front of high schools. And, that campus outreach has taken his team to over a hundred colleges: from Stanford to UC Berkeley, Santa Barbara City College to Shasta College, UNLV to Oregon State to Laney College Oakland.

It was such an outreach that led Blythe to discover that something seemingly insignificant that took place years before would create a wide open door for him to testify about the truth of abortion at a Northern California campus. If the name Blythe sounds familiar it should. He is the uncle of a special young woman whose short life on this earth changed many during her service in pro-life movement. Blythe’s niece, Kortney was introduced to the reality of abortion as a young girl and dedicated her life to seeing it abolished. But, in 2011, after years speaking the truth of abortion in various ministries, Kortney was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident.

Don Blythe on Campus

Kortney would often join her uncle during his campus outreach programs. It was during one such event that a College professor approached Kortney and asked her which one of them wanted to come and take on his sociology class. Courtney told the professor that either she or her “Uncle Don” would go and according to Blythe, she gave him her uncle’s phone number.

“Hey uncle Don here is a speaking engagement for you,” Blythe recalled her telling him.

Blythe told Saynsumthn that he vividly remembered the precise way the professor extended the invitation.

“He said how about next Wednesday you come to the class. Don you come to the class and raise your flag and see if anyone will salute. You have an hour and a half.”

So, the Christian Abolitionist said he went home and put together a powerpoint presentation. He showed up at the class prepared to speak and show the students a video which contained images of abortion in graphic detail.

“I tell the students ahead of time, during my presentation I won’t show you disturbing pictures of injustice. I won’t spring it on you – but at some point in my presentation I will have a 7 minute video to show. If you choose to leave or close your eyes you can do that.

I have never seen one person close their eyes but two or three have walked out.”

According to Blythe, after he shows the video of the abortion victims, he has documented that the class generally changes their view on abortion from 80% pro-choice to about 30%. In addition, he has had students who watched the video now call abortion murder!

Blythe said that although he has asked several professors to allow him to speak to their class, no one ever responded before until this the professor stepped forward. So, when the professor invited Blythe back for the second semester, it peaked Blythe’s curiosity, prompting him to ask:

“I appreciate you having me in the class – but what promoted you to allow me to come into your classroom?”

The professor’s response surprised even Blythe and has convinced him all the more that the use of abortion victim imagery will leave a long lasting positive impression on many people. Below is what Blythe recalled the professor telling him was his reason for the invitation:

“Let me tell you, I think probably the reason is that when I was in elementary school, I was getting ready to go into my mom’s car after school and I saw this old woman holding a graphic picture of an abortion.

“That had a very real influence on me, without giving away my views it had an influence to allow you to come in to give your presentation.”

So, because a little old lady stood on street corner holding a graphic image to a bunch of elementary schools students at a school in Ohio, Blythe has been enabled to share the truth with many students today. And, that was not the end of the story. According to Blythe, the professor said that after he speaks there are students that keep their babies.

Blythe recalled his words:

“Let me tell you something Don, just between you and me, I want you to know there are a number of students who have come up and talked to me over the years after the class. Your presentation has influenced them to not have an abortion. One young lady even skipped her class to sit in on your class because she heard you were going to be speaking.”

Blythe ended his account of this story by paying honor to the old lady who once held a graphic abortion image on a sidewalk, noting that it opened up doors to share life and save babies years later. But Blythe also observed that the woman probably never knew the profound impact that she had on that once young elementary school boy who lived in Ohio at the time. And, such is the work every pro-life activist.

You’re going to keep her on staff and let her try to mold young minds? Why wasn’t she fired? ” ~ Mark Crutcher, president of Life Dynamics, Inc.

Today, Mark Crutcher, president of Life Dynamics, Inc. a national pro-life organization located in Denton, Texas, is calling for the professor who attacked a pro-life teen on the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), to be fired.

On his monthly pro-life TV show, Life Talk, Crutcher, asked how parents can send their kids to UCSB where this professor remains employed after allegedly committing an act of assault on a 16 year-old teen, “What is wrong with the parents and the students themselves…paying all this money to go to an institution that would have a woman like this on staff?”

Crutcher then asks why the professor, Mireille Miller-Young, was not fired, calling her continued employment “bad judgment” on the part of UCSB, “Why wasn’t she fired? If I had a kid going there, first off I am going to call the school and say, you’re not getting another nickel from me as long as this woman’s on staff. Because, it indicates bad judgment on your part.”

Crutcher was outraged that UCSB has allowed Miller-Young to remain on staff despite her admitting to police that she “set a good example for her students” in stealing another person’s property.

Crutcher told his audience, that if he had a child in attendance at UCSB he would remove his financial support from the school immediately.

Crutcher said that if he were a parent, he would tell the school, “You’re judgment is so poor that this woman can admit that she did this thing and then come out and say I had the right to do it? And you’re going to keep her on staff, and you’re going to let her try to mold young minds? Not with my money, you’re not. Why are students still going there and why are parents still paying for it? That’s the part I don’t understand.”

Censorship High School over Pro-life Speech

Wilson High School has received a letter from the Thomas More Society a Chicago-based public interest law firm, demanding that the school end its discriminatory treatment of a pro-life student group. Wilson Students for Life (“WSFL”), an affiliate of Students for Life of America, was established in the Fall of 2013 by freshman Bryce Asberg to “loudly proclaim the pro-life message.” Since its founding, the group has faced constant hostility from the school’s administration, such as forbidding the group to hang its posters or host certain events, while other student groups have faced no similar restrictions. The school has until February 25th to respond to Thomas More Society’s demand to end its hostility towards Wilson Students for Life, which discrimination violates the federal Equal Access Act.

Asberg’s group selected two posters from the Students for Life of America website to promote its club. In compliance with school procedures, they asked the administration’s permission to hang these posters. The first read “Since Roe v. Wade 1/3 of our generation has been aborted” with a picture of a milk carton and the word “missing” above the photo of a baby. The second poster quotes President Ronald Reagan: “I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion is already born.”

Missing

The administration refused to give WSFL permission to hang the posters. The administration stated that the school policy only allows posters that “do not offend staff or students, put others down if they have a different belief/opinion, or otherwise cause disruption.” WSFL’s posters, the administration maintained, would violate this policy because they promote a message rather than solely promoting the group’s meetings.

Despite this policy, however, the administration has permitted the Wilson Gay Straight Alliance (“GSA”) to hang flyers, for example, promoting homosexual relationships by showing conjoined male symbols and conjoined female symbols and stating “Love knows no limits.”

After the administration’s denial of WSFL’s posters, school administrators met with Asberg and the other WSFL leaders to “give them advice” on how to best run their club.

Asberg said he left the meeting feeling like his group was encouraged to only host events after school, while other groups were allowed to do what they wanted during the school day. For example, while GSA is permitted to hold a Day of Silence during the school day, the pro-life club was discouraged from doing so as their identical event would be “too controversial.”

“The Wilson High School administration cannot be allowed to trample on the constitutional rights of Wilson Students for Life,” said Kristan Hawkins, President of Students for Life of America. “Our pro-life students will not accept their right to free speech being taken away. Sadly, this case shows that viewpoint discrimination is alive and well in today’s schools and that administrators think they can still get away with it. Students for Life of America is proud to stand with Wilson Students for Life to demand that the Wilson High School administration reverse their unjust decision and give equal treatment to all students and student groups, regardless of their views on abortion.”

The federal Equal Access Act requires that schools give each student group the same opportunities, without discriminating against any group. In 2002, the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit held that a Washington school which gave one group access to its bulletin boards must give that access to all student groups. Moreover, a number of Supreme Court decisions, such as Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Sch. Dist., have held that students’ speech cannot be silenced simply because the administration has vague fears of disruption.

“Wilson Students for Life is passionate about the pro-life movement,” stated Bryce Asberg, Founder of Wilson Students for Life, “and we will continue to stand for life in our community. We simply desire to be allowed to express our views.”
