Planned Parenthood, Abortion corporation

Planned Parenthood’s estimated abortion revenue totaled more than half (52%) of the organization’s non-government health services revenue, reaching nearly $200 million ($190.3) for the second year in a row, according to an analysis conducted by Live Action News.

The stunning numbers confirm what Planned Parenthood’s new president Dr. Leana Wen claimed when she identified abortion as Planned Parenthood’s “core mission.” As Live Action News previously documented, in 2017, although Planned Parenthood claimed abortion made up just 3.4 percent of its services, the abortion vendor was able to increase abortions nearly four percent (3.54%), from 321,384 in 2016 to 332,757 in 2017, the highest number committed by the corporation since 2011.

To calculate the latest data, Live Action News used the same methodology utilized in 2016: examining revenue and median abortion costs and comparing them against reported abortion totals in Planned Parenthood’s 2017-2018 annual report, in which the organization reported committing 332,757 abortions.

1. Average cost of abortions

Planned Parenthood’s website notes the cost of a surgical abortion:

An abortion in the first trimester can cost up to $1,500, but it’s often less. The price of an abortion depends on where you get it (hospitals are often more expensive), and whether or not you have health insurance that will cover some or all of the cost. The cost also varies based on how long you’ve been pregnant — a second-trimester abortion usually costs more.

It also says this about the cost of a medication abortion:

The abortion pill can cost up to around $1000, but is often less. The cost of a medication abortion varies and depends on where you get it and whether or not you have health insurance that will cover some or all of the cost.

However, this year, Live Action News was able to locate more specific pricing at Planned Parenthood’s website.

Early Abortion/ Medication Abortion Pill

  • Planned Parenthood’s former “special affiliate” the Guttmacher Institute, reports that the average amount paid for an abortion in a nonhospital setting at 10 weeks’ gestation and with local anesthesia was $508, in 2014. The average paid for an early medication abortion (up to 9 weeks’ gestation) was $535.
  • However, at Planned Parenthood, the cost of medication abortion in Indiana or Kentucky is $600, while in Kansas it ranges from $650-$700 and $700- $815, and in California Planned Parenthood charges $600- $750.

For our measurement, we will use $508 for early surgical abortions and $600 for medication abortions.

Here’s what a medication abortion entails, according to former abortionist, Dr. Anthony Levatino:

In-Clinic Surgical Abortion

  • 13 – 13.6 weeks $625
  • 14 – 14.6 weeks $650
  • 15 – 15.6 weeks $800
  • 16 – 16.6 weeks $825
  • 17 – 17.6 weeks $950
  • 18 – 18.6 weeks $1000
  • 19 – 19.6 weeks $1100

For our measurement, we will average Planned Parenthood’s Ohio abortion prices and use the $1,195 price for abortions past 21 weeks, although they are likely higher.

Abortions in the second trimester are often called dismemberment abortions as described in the video below:

2. Number of abortions by trimester

Live Action News broke down the 332,757 Planned Parenthood abortion numbers as follows:

  • Medication abortions: 103,155 (31 percent per Guttmacher’s most recent abortion data)
  • Abortions 13-15 weeks 20,631 (6.2 percent per Guttmacher 2014.)
  • Abortions 16-20 weeks 12,645 (3.8 percent per Guttmacher 2014.)
  • Abortions 21 weeks and greater 4,326 (1.3 percent per Guttmacher 2014.)
  • First trimester surgical abortions: 192,000 — the remaining balance of abortions.

3. Estimated abortion revenue: $190,274,370

To determine Planned Parenthood’s estimated abortion revenue, Live Action News multiplied the number of abortions by trimester with the average cost of abortions, as follows:

  • Medication abortions: 103,155 (31%)  x $600 = $61,893,000
  • Surgical abortions (first trimester): 192,000 (balance) x $508 = $97,536,000
  • Surgical abortions (13-15 weeks): 20,631 (6.2%)  x $650= $13,410,150
  • Surgical abortions (16-20 weeks): 12,645 (3.8%)  x $970= $12,265,650
  • Abortions after 21 weeks: 4,326 (1.3%) x $1,195 = $5,169,570

Total estimated abortion revenue using these figures is $190,274,370

Percentage of abortion revenue

We then broke down the percentage of abortion revenue using figures from a revenue statement located in Planned Parenthood’s 2017-2018 annual report.

Planned Parenthood 2017 to 2018 annual report Revenue

Note that there are two sources of revenue for “health services,” which include:

  • Government Health Services Reimbursements & Grants (taxpayer dollars) – $563.8 million
  • Non-Government Health Services Revenue – $365.7 million

Percentage of non-government health services revenue: 52%

If we divide Planned Parenthood’s estimated abortion revenue ($190,274,370)  by the total non-government health center revenue of $365,700,000, we find that abortion makes up 52 percent of Planned Parenthood’s non-government health services revenue.

Percentage of non-government health services plus tax dollar revenue: nearly 20.5%

However, even if we include the $563.8 million in government dollars with the $365.7 ($929,500,000 million), abortion revenue can be estimated at 20.5 percent of all Planned Parenthood’s health services revenue.

Percentage of all Planned Parenthood revenue: 11.4%

Then, if we include all revenue sources ($1,665,100,000), abortion revenue would exceed an estimated 11.4 percent.

According to our calculations, over the past few years, estimated abortion revenue has steadily risen at the abortion corporation:

    • 2017: Estimated abortion revenue: $190,274,370
    • 2016: Estimated abortion revenue:  $177,631,103
    • 2015: Estimated abortion revenue:  $164,404,332

Between 2016 and 2017 government funding to Planned Parenthood (over half a billion dollars annually) rose nearly four percent (3.69%) even though the abortion vendor has been embroiled in numerous scandals, abuses and fraud, including covering up for child sexual predators as well as disgruntled employees, claiming a toxic work environment and pregnancy discrimination.

With increasing abortions generating millions in revenue for Planned Parenthood (while national abortion totals decrease) is it any wonder why actual health services like cancer screenings and well women exams at Planned Parenthood have decreased? Planned Parenthood has vowed in 2019 to focus even more on their abortion “cash cow,” and if radical amendments such as the Equality Act or Medicare for All are passed, we can expect those numbers to skyrocket even more.

Planned Parenthood in 2017: $244 million in profits after $564 million from tax payers

Planned Parenthood’s new annual report: More abortions, less healthcare

Planned Parenthood, abortions

Planned Parenthood’s new president Dr. Leana Wen has called abortion Planned Parenthood’s “core mission” — and based on the corporation’s newly-released 2017-2018 annual report, Planned Parenthood hasn’t shied away from that “mission” one bit. Abortions and taxpayer funding are up once again at the abortion corporation — at their highest level since 2011 — while other services have declined, including cancer screenings and overall contraception services. And as the country’s overall abortion numbers show a decline, Planned Parenthood’s abortion numbers continue to go up by the thousands — which has also increased this “non-profit” organization’s profits to nearly $245 million in 2017 alone. Live Action president Lila Rose responded to the news, stating, “Planned Parenthood has increased abortions while it offers virtually no services to help pregnant moms birth or care for their babies. Referring one child out for adoption for every 117 abortions you perform and offering just 9,000 prenatal services compared to over 332,000 abortions shows this corporation is more interested in aborting babies than helping moms have healthy births.”

Some takeaways to note:

Planned Parenthood’s abortions increased by 11,000 in 2017, killing more than 332,000 preborn children

Planned Parenthood has long (and falsely) claimed that abortions are only three percent of its services. This claim has been debunked multiple times. And yet, in its 2017 report, Planned Parenthood still claims abortions are a mere 3.4 percent of its services — an increase that translates into 11,000 more lives taken in 2017 than in 2016. Abortions rose nearly four percent (3.54%), from 321,384 in 2016 to 332,757 in 2017, the highest number committed by the corporation since 2011.

In the past ten years, abortions at Planned Parenthood have risen nine percent (8.98%) from 305,310 in 2007. The abortion corporation provides medication abortion in 357 of its 600 facilities, as well as telemedicine abortion in 13 states. According to a recent survey conducted by Operation Rescue, Planned Parenthood locations now represent a majority (51 percent) of all abortion facilities in the U.S. Out of the 133 abortion clinics which OR discovered would commit abortions at 20 weeks or later, 37 are Planned Parenthood facilities – more than double the number just two years prior.

Planned Parenthood’s abortion market share currently stands at 35.9% when compared to the most recent data from the Guttmacher Institute for 2014. This number may increase after Guttmacher releases new figures. This means that one corporation alone commits nearly 36% of all U.S. abortions.

Government funding increased by $20 million, and profit was nearly $245 million

In 2017, Planned Parenthood saw an increase in Government funding of nearly four percent (3.69%) from 2016 ($543.7 million  to $563.8 million), the highest amount recorded in recent years. In 2017, Planned Parenthood took in $365.7 million in non-government health service revenue and $630.8 million in private donations. As a result, Planned Parenthood was able to pocket a whopping $244.8 million in excess revenue over spending (profit) in 2017, a nearly 149 percent increase from $98.5 million the year prior. In fact, almost every year since 2000, Planned Parenthood’s revenue has exceeded its expenses by tens of millions of dollars.

Overall contraception services fell another 3 percent in 2017, plummeting 33 percent over 10 years

Even though contraception services make up one quarter of the report’s numbers, overall total contraception services dropped by three percent from last year (2,701,866 in 2016 to 2,620,867 in 2017). Since 2009, contraception services have fallen nearly 35 percent (34.63%) from a high of 4,009,549. In the past 10 years, contraception services have dropped nearly 33 percent (32.63%) from 3,889,980 in 2007to 2,620,867 in 2017.

Increasing slightly was reversible contraception for women, which rose less than a percent (.87%)  from 1,854,518 in 2016 to 1,870,664 in 2017. Vasectomy clients increased five percent (5.04%), from 3,257 in 2016 to 3421 in 2017

Total cancer screenings dropped another 7 percent in 2017, plummeting 68 percent over 10 years

Pap tests decreased two percent (2.46%) from 281,063 in 2016 to 274,145 in 2017, falling nearly 77 percent (76.84%) from a high of 1,183,692 in 2004. In the past 10 years, Pap tests have decreased nearly 72 percent (71.70%), falling from 968,682 in 2007 to 274,145 in 2017.

Breast exams (Planned Parenthood does not perform mammograms) decreased 12 percent (11.97%) from 336,614 in 2016 to 296,310 in 2017, a nearly 73 percent (72.73%) drop from a high of 1,086,654 in 2000. In the past ten years, breast exams have fallen 65 percent (65.19%), from 851,232 in 2007to 296,310 in 2017.

Total cancer screenings dropped seven percent (7.02%) from the previous year (660,777 in 2016 to 614,361 in 2017).  This service has fallen nearly 72 percent (71.53%) from a high of 2,157,849 in 2004. In the past 10 years, total cancer screenings fell nearly 68 percent (67.68%)  1,900,850 in 2007 to 614,361 in 2017.

HPV treatments rose nearly five percent (4.52%) from 18,853 in 2016 to 19,705 in 2017.

Other diagnostic services, which include biopsies, samplings, ablations, and other gynecological surgeries, rose nearly six percent (5.63%) from 5,645 in 2016 to 5,963 in 2017 but dropped seventeen percent from 7,184 in 2015 when the category was added.

Adoptions dropped 27 percent, while unspecified ‘prenatal care’ rose nearly 17 percent

Planned Parenthood performed 1,074,952 pregnancy tests in 2017, roughly the same amount as 2016 (1,071,642). And, while prenatal care services were up nearly seventeen percent (16.66%) 9,055 in 2017 from 7,762 in 2016 they were down nearly seventy-one percent (70.88%) from their high of 31,098 in 2010. In the past ten years, prenatal care has dropped seventeen percent (17.03%) from 10,914 in 2007to 9,055 in 2017.

Adoption referrals maintained a consistent decline in 2017 , falling twenty-seven percent (27.20%) from 3,889 in 2016 to just 2,831 and forty-two percent (42.37%) from their high of 4,912 ten years prior in 2007.

To date, Planned Parenthood performs 117.54 abortions for every adoption they refer out.

Well-woman exams dropped 8 percent, while unspecified ‘miscarriage care’ rose 46 percent

Planned Parenthood’s recently added categories of miscarriage care and well-woman exams also saw changes. In 2017, miscarriage care rose forty-six percent (46.45%) from 1,182 in 2016 to 1,731 in 2017,  while well-woman exams dropped nearly eight percent (7.92%) from 235,355 in 2016 to 216,722 in 2017.

Overall, “Other Women’s Health Services” decreased slightly (1%) from 1,315,941 in 2016 to 1,302,460 in 2017.

Total services increased by 2 percent in 2017, but have fallen 11 percent over 10 years

While total services overall increased slightly by two percent (1.57%) from 9,537,592 in 2016 to 9,687,070 in 2017, total services dropped nearly fifteen percent (14.91%) from a high of 11,383,900 in 2009. In the past ten years, total services at Planned Parenthood have fallen eleven percent (11.31%) from 10,921,825 in 2007 to 9,687,070 in 2017.

STD/STI treatments rose six percent

Planned Parenthood’s largest proportion of services (48.7%) consists of STD/STI treatments, which rose six percent (6.29%) from 4,434,039 in 2016 to 4,712,985 in 2017, their highest in years.

Patient numbers and number of facilities remained unchanged from 2016 to 2017

In 2017, Planned Parenthood’s facility count remained the same at 600, despite once operating 900 facilities. Between 2007 and 2017, the organization shuttered more than 280 facilities.

Planned Parenthood’s published client numbers remained unchanged at 2.4 million patients in 2017. However, clients dropped nearly 23 percent from the 3.1 million they boasted in 2006, and 21 percent (20.55%) from the 3,020,651 clients they claimed in 2007.

While Planned Parenthood bills itself as a health agency for women, the organization’s male clients are a growing segment. In 2014, Planned Parenthood claims to have served more than 250,000 male patients. That number has now reached twelve percent (288,000), according to spokesperson Alencia Johnson. While Planned Parenthood’s patients are steadily declining, federally funded health centers, as identified by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration, served over 27 million patients in 2017 alone.

Planned Parenthood ends the lives of 912 innocent preborn babies each and every day, 38 per hour, and commits one abortion every 95 seconds. Yet, while the corporation’s legitimate health services continue a downward trajectory, Planned Parenthood receives $1,544,657 in tax monies every day. While the abortion vendor has been embroiled in numerous scandals, abuses and fraud, including covering up for child sexual predators as well as disgruntled employees, claiming a toxic work environment and pregnancy discrimination, Planned Parenthood’s 2019 plan has vowed to focus on expanding abortion — and it seems the profitable corporation is doing just that.

women, woman, abortion

Planned Parenthood, the nation’s top abortion provider holding 35% of the nation’s marketshare in abortions, is not good for the taxpayer. The corporation has a long history of corruption, which abortion-friendly media and politicians willingly overlook. The spin and propaganda regularly disseminated about its abortion business is so pervasive that the truth is often overlooked. Here are some facts, backed up by documented evidence:

And this political organization, like most, works to bring in dollars for political causes. A recent Live Action News analysis showed that the abortion giant’s goal has long been to ramp up its political activities, with former CEO Cecile Richards stating her she wanted to make it “the largest kick butt political organization.” Richards has a background in political organizing — not in health care.

READ: Planned Parenthood lies to women about fetal development while harvesting fetal body parts

But beyond this, the abortion corporation has a long list of abuses. Here’s a short list:

The list above does not include the number of women injured or killed after using the organization’s alleged “services.”

The organization uses its political clout to gain supporters to fuel their agenda. Its own reports reveal:

  • Its “supporters” reportedly grew by 300 percent, increasing from 3 million in 2005 to 12 million by 2018.
  • Private donations increased nearly 106 percent, from $258.7 million in 2006 to $532.7 in 2016.
  • Government funding increased over 61 percent, from $336.7 million in 2006 to $543.7 million in 2016.
Image: Planned Parenthood focused on recruiting supporters

Planned Parenthood focused on recruiting supporters

And all while it recruits “supporters,” its services to patients (and patient numbers in general) have dropped dramaticallyover the past decade:

  • Breast exams declined nearly 62 percent (882,961 in 2006 to 336,614 in 2016).
  • Pap tests decreased nearly 74 percent (1,070,449 in 2006 to 281,063 in 2016).
  • Cancer screenings plummeted 67 percent (2,007,371 in 2006 to 660,777 in 2016).
  • Contraception services dropped by over 32 percent (3,989,474 in 2006 to 2,701,866 in 2016).
  • The organization’s overall services decreased nearly 10 percent (2006 to 2016).
  • The organization shuttered more than 280 facilities (2007 to 2017).
  • Planned Parenthood lost over 700,000 patients, dropping nearly 23 percent (3.1 million in 2006 to 2.4 million in 2016.)

And in just the past few years:

  • The percentage of the organization’s contraceptive services declined from 34 percent in January of 2014 to 28 percent in January of 2018.
  • The estimated number of unintended pregnancies averted by contraceptive services each year dropped 22.33 percent, from 515,000 in January of 2014 to 400,000 in January of 2018.
  • Between 2014 and 2016, the estimated number of abortions averted by contraceptive services each year declined nearly 9 percent.

According to the organization’s own figures, its abortion market share has increased while the nation’s overall profitable abortions are on a steady decline. Between 2006 and 2016, the corporation’s abortions increased nearly 11 percent, averaging more than 320,000 abortions per year.

This abortion business turns massive profits and should not be taxpayer funded:

  • Between 2006 and 2016, overall taxpayer funding to the corporation increased 61 percent
  • Private donations increased by nearly 106 percent.
  • Excess revenue over spending (profitincreased by 27 percent in just one year, from $77.5 million in 2015 to a whopping $98.5 million in 2016
  • Almost every year since 2000, the organization’s revenue has exceeded expenses by tens of millions of dollars (yearly surpluses range from $12.2 million in 2001 to a high of $155.5 million in 2010).
Planned Parenthood excess revenue over expenses 2000 to 2016

Since the abortion-friendly media, regularly awarded by Planned Parenthood, refuses to report honestly about the organization, American citizens must say enough is enough. Demand an end to this abortion corporation’s taxpayer funding –permanently.

Planned Parenthood’s 2016 annual report shows women don’t need the abortion corporation

Planned Parenthood released its 2016-2017 annual report over the New Year’s Eve holiday weekend. In a nutshell, contraception services, cervical cancer screenings, and other legitimate health services offered by the abortion corporation have all decreased again, along with a very slight decrease in abortions (two percent drop). It is clear from Planned Parenthood’s own annual report that women don’t really need the organization, and are finding legitimate health care elsewhere.

From 2006 to 2016, abortions at Planned Parenthood increased nearly 11 percent, averaging more than 320,000 abortions per year. Despite the fact that figures indicate abortions are on a steady decline nationally, in 2016, Planned Parenthood reported ending the lives of 321,384 preborn children (down from more than 328,000 the previous year), maintaining the organization’s nearly 35 percent nationwide market share of abortions.

Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards (who is a political organizer with no background in health care) once proclaimed, “We aim to be the largest kick-butt political organization.” And indeed, Planned Parenthood is highly political, using its pro-abortion friends in Congress and the media to increase its bottom line and pay its staff (and especially its CEO) extremely high salaries. As previously documented, a former top executive for Planned Parenthood once admitted that the abortion corporation’s “success” was linked to power and money, and he showed that taxpayer dollars are what enable the abortion corporation to recruit, hire and pay its top staffers six-digit salaries.

2016 was no exception to the previous years.

Despite promises from many in Congress to defund the abortion giant, Planned Parenthood’s 2016-2017 annual report reveals that taxpayer funding barely dropped at all — less than 2 percent — from $554.6 million in 2015 to $543.7 million in 2016. This mere sliver of a decrease cannot even begin to counter the astronomical 61 percent increase in taxpayer funding to the organization between 2006 and 2016, from $336.7 million to $543.7 million.

Planned Parenthood 2016 annual report excess revenue and Government funds

While taxpayers sent half a billion dollars in state and federal dollars to Planned Parenthood, the abortion corporation managed to increase its excess revenue from $77.5 million in 2015 to a whopping $98.5 million in 2016. That’s right: this nonprofit organization pocketed a profit of $98.5 million last year alone.

This means that despite all the hyperventilating abortion apologists’ claims that defunding Planned Parenthood would shutter the abortion business, Planned Parenthood’s excess revenue over spending increased by 27 percent in just one year. And almost every year since 2000, Planned Parenthood’s revenue has exceeded its expenses by tens of millions of dollars (yearly surpluses range from $12.2 million in 2001 to a high of $155.5 million in 2010) — all while actual health services and patients declined.

In 2016, Planned Parenthood’s decreasing services continued as demonstrated below…

Patients

In 2016, Planned Parenthood claims to have served 2.4 million patients, dropping nearly 23 percent from the 3.1 million they boasted just ten years ago in 2006. And, while Planned Parenthood’s patients are steadily declining, federally funded health centers, as identified by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration, served nearly 26 million patients in 2016 alone.

Cancer Screenings

Although breast exams rose nearly five percent (336,614) from 2015 numbers (321,700), overall, they have declined nearly 62 percent since 2006, when Planned Parenthood performed 882,961 breast exams.

Pap tests at Planned Parenthood have decreased nearly 74 percent in the past years falling from 1,070,449 in 2006 to 281,063 in 2016. In 2016, Planned Parenthood performed 4.33 percent fewer Pap tests than they recorded in 2015.

While all cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood declined less than one percent between 2015 and 2016, overall they have plummeted 67 percent, from 2,007,371 in 2006 to 660,777 in 2016.

Contraception

Contraception services continued to drop in 2016, falling nearly four percent (2,701,866) from 2015 (2,808,815) and over 48 percent from a high of 4,009,549 in 2009. Since 2006, contraception services at Planned Parenthood have declined by over 32 percent (3,989,474 in 2006 to 2,701,866 in 2016), despite telling the media following President Donald Trump’s election that IUD requests at Planned Parenthood rose by 900 percent.

Planned Parenthood 2016 annual report Contraception

Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception (EC) distributed by Planned Parenthood decreased by nearly five percent (from 767,830 in 2015 to 730,329 in 2016).

Live Action News previously documented that in some cases EC can act to prevent the implantation of a newly-fertilized human being into the uterine wall. Since life scientifically begins at fertilization, intentionally ending the life of a new, unique individual after fertilization has occurred is an abortion, and any type of birth control that has the potential to end the life of a new human being can be considered an abortifacient. There is no way to know for certain if or when this occurs when a woman takes EC, and therefore, these cases cannot be calculated into the total abortion numbers.

Prenatal Care

Prenatal care services have also plummeted at Planned Parenthood.

In 2016, Planned Parenthood record only 7,762 prenatal care services, a decline of nearly 18 percent from 2015, when they reported 9,419. In the past ten years, prenatal care at the abortion corporation has declined nearly 30 percent from a high of 11,058 in 2006.

Despite years of claiming that Planned Parenthood offers prenatal care to women, Live Action investigators exposed the fact that almost no Planned Parenthood centers offer prenatal care. When undercover callers spoke to Planned Parenthood staffers, the reason most often given by staff as to why no prenatal care was available is because Planned Parenthood offers abortions instead. The backlash from Live Action’s investigation was swift, and the abortion corporation had to purge its website of the claim that they offered “prenatal services.”

Adoptions

Planned Parenthood claims to have done 3,889 adoption referrals. In order to be eligible to receive federal Title X funds, the abortion corporation must offer information on all pregnancy options, including adoption. According to former Planned Parenthood manager Crystal Eldridge, the adoption option is presented in the form of mere lip service (“You know your choices, right? You can keep it, abort it, or put it up for adoption,”), and former manager Sue Thayer says Planned Parenthood merely puts a small packet in front of women on their pregnancy options which the women did not have to accept, with no discussion on the actual options themselves:

Last year, Live Action exposed the way Planned Parenthood handled adoption referrals, which might account for why this number rose from the previous year (2,889 in 2015 to 3,889 in 2016). Live Action investigators contacted various Planned Parenthood facilities, some of which receive tax dollars from Title X. According to requirements under Title X, projects that are funded must offer pregnant women several options regarding their pregnancies, including prenatal care and adoption.

What you will hear in the video below is how Planned Parenthood fails to offer Live Action’s investigators any of this — no adoption counseling, no adoption referrals, no list of adoption agencies, and no chance to speak with any so-called “specially trained staff” about the adoption option, despite online statements to the contrary:

In 2016, Planned Parenthood killed nearly 82 times as many preborn children with abortion as they referred for adoption. In fact, the highest number of adoptions Planned Parenthood has ever referred in a year was just 4,912 (2007).

Planned Parenthood’s adoption referral numbers dropped nearly 21 percent from 2007 to 2016.

Total Services

Although Planned Parenthood’s total “services” rose by about half a percent in 2016 (9,537,592) from 2015 (9,494,977), the organization’s services have decreased nearly 10 percent (10,588,360) since 2006.

New Categories

Last year, Planned Parenthood added new subcategories under “Other Women’s Health Services” — “Miscarriage Care” and “Well-Women Exams.” While “Miscarriage Care” declined slightly in 2016 (no details on what “miscarriage care” entails), “Well-Women Exams” rose four percent.

In 2015, Planned Parenthood also introduced the subcategory “Other Contraception Services” to the Contraception category.  This “Other” subcategory, which the abortion corporation does not define, increased nearly 13 percent from 2015 to 2016. What is interesting is that adding these additional categories keeps Planned Parenthood’s abortion services conveniently at 3 percent of the organization’s overall services. Live Action has previously shown, however, that this three percent figure is complete nonsense, and is arrived at through a great deal of manipulation. The Washington Post even called this statistic “misleading,” awarding it three Pinocchios, and Slate called it “the most meaningless abortion statistic ever.”

Planned Parenthood once operated 900 facilities, yet today, states on its website that it now operates “more than 600 health centers,” a further decline of nearly 8 percent from what they published on their website last year.

Between 2007 and 2017, the organization shuttered more than 280 facilities.

While these kinds of decreases are good news, the tragedy is that one in every seven patients at Planned Parenthood has an abortion. Money is fungible and can be used to pay for facilities and staff who commit abortion. And while Congress fails to defund Planned Parenthood, taxpayers are forced to continue to monetarily support an abortion business that takes the lives of approximately 881 preborn children per day. The time to defund is now.

Editor’s Note: This report has been corrected. An earlier version incorrectly reported 2014-15 patient numbers instead of 2015-16.

Half of Planned Parenthood’s non-government services revenue comes from abortion

Posted in Cecile Richards, Cecile Richards Salary, Planned Parenthood Annual Report with tags , , , , , , on November 20, 2017 by saynsumthn

An analysis by Live Action News has found that abortion revenue accounts for over half of Planned Parenthood’s non-government health services revenue and over 12 percent of Planned Parenthood’s total revenue. The figures confirm further that abortion is a much higher percentage of Planned Parenthood’s overall revenue than the public is led to believe.

Planned Parenthood is an abortion corporation led by Cecile Richards, hired for her experience in political organizing, not health care. Since Richards came to office, Planned Parenthood’s market share of abortion has increased to the point that they now garner nearly 35 percent of the US abortion market. Despite the fact that Planned Parenthood claims abortion is just three percent of the services they offer, (recently disproved by Live Action in the video below) it is clear that revenue from abortions has proven to be lucrative for Planned Parenthood.

In 2009, an analysis by Live Action News found that abortion accounted for 22.6 percent of Planned Parenthood’s clinic revenue. Today, that percentage is much larger.

To calculate this number Live Action News looked at revenue, abortion totals, and median abortion costs.

Planned Parenthood has a few revenue sources which they detail in their 2015-2016 annual report.

PPFA Revenue 2015-.22016 annual report

Note that there are two sources of revenue for “health services” which include:

  • Government Health Services Reimbursements & Grants (taxpayer dollars) – $554.6 million
  • Non-Government Health Services Revenue – $306.8 million

COST OF ABORTIONS:

In 2015, Planned Parenthood reported that they performed 328,348 abortions.

Planned Parenthood’s former “special affiliate” and research arm, The Guttmacher Institute gives us an average of first-trimester abortion costs as follows:

  • In 2011–2012, the average amount paid for an abortion in a non-hospital setting at 10 weeks gestation and with local anesthesia was $480. The average paid for an early medication abortion up to 9 weeks gestation was $504.

And according to a Planned Parenthood report from 2014, non-hospital facilities charged an average of $1,500 for abortion at 20 weeks.

If we break the 328,348 abortion numbers down using percentages from Guttmacher’s most recent abortion data which states that 31 percent (101,788) of reported abortions nationwide were medication abortions and 1.3 percent  (4,269) were greater than 21 weeks, that would leave 222,291 as first-trimester surgical abortions.

By taking the average cost of abortion for each category – and without accounting for inflation- we estimate the following:

  • Medication abortions: 101,788 x $504 = $51,301,152
  • Surgical abortions: 222,291 x $480 = $106,699,680
  • Abortions after 21 weeks: 4,269 X $1500 = $6,403,500

__________________________

  • Total estimated abortion revenue is $164,404,332

That is a lot of money and may be the impetus for why former Planned Parenthood staffers claim PP enforces abortion quotas:

If we divide Planned Parenthood’s estimated abortion revenue ($164,404,332) by their total non-government health center revenue of $306,800,000, we find that abortion makes up nearly 54 percent (53.58%) of Planned Parenthood’s non-government health services revenue.

However, even if we include the $554.6 million in government dollars, abortion revenue can be estimated at 19 percent of all Planned Parenthood’s health services revenue.

Then, if we include all revenue sources, abortion revenue would exceed an estimated 12 percent.

Planned Parenthood falsely claims that tax dollars do not fund abortions (even though money is fungible) and the half a billion in forced taxpayer dollars they receive annually are simply reimbursements from Medicaid, etc. Today, despite their claims, legitimate health services, as well as patients, are declining while abortions are on the increase.

But, the real impact of Planned Parenthood’s abortion revenue lies inside the organization’s own annual reports which reveal that, almost every year since 2000, Planned Parenthood’s revenue has exceeded their expenses — not just by a few dollars, but by tens of millions of dollars (yearly surpluses ranging from $12.2 million in 2001 to a high of $155.5 million in 2010).  By 2015, according to Planned Parenthood’s own report. the abortion corporation reported an excess of revenue over expenses in the amount of $77.5 million, an increase of nearly 32 percent over from the previous year.

So, why does an abortion corporation which makes a profit almost every year need our tax dollars? Good question!

Planned Parenthood’s health services have plummeted

Posted in Planned Parenthood abortion numbers, Planned Parenthood Annual Report, Planned Parenthood Decreasing Services with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 24, 2017 by saynsumthn

(LiveActionNews ) — Planned Parenthood claims to provide a number of health services…but what they don’t tell the public is that these services have been decreasing significantly for years, despite the fact that over several years, Congress has nearly doubled the abortion giant’s taxpayer funding. As Congress is considering defunding Planned Parenthood’s half a billion dollars annually, Live Action has highlighted a select number of these declining services in a newly released video, which focuses on services reported from a ten-year period (2004 to 2014), as well as on Planned Parenthood’s website and official spokespersons’ statements:

The data speaks for itself and paints a clear picture of how undeserving Planned Parenthood is of those dollars. While politicians and abortion advocates tout a variety of Planned Parenthood’s health services in an attempt to justify federal funding for the organization, many of those same services are drastically declining.

So what isn’t declining at Planned Parenthood? Two things: abortion and taxpayer funding.

The following report includes links to documentation where the information originated. While Planned Parenthood may have adjusted service totals for a specific year in a later report, the statistics used here and in the video are from the most current reports available. While the Live Action video focuses on cancer screening services, this article includes additional statistics on declining services.

PATIENTS and FACILITIES

Image
Planned Parenthood serves half a million less patients.

In 2011, Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards, boasted of the organization’s three million patients. Now, as of early 2017, that amount is half a million less.

One can only speculate why Planned Parenthood’s patient numbers are falling, but investigative footage by Live Action (as well as the Center for Medical Progress) exposing distasteful and potentially illegal activities by the abortion giant could hold a clue.

In addition to patients, facility numbers are also taking a hit.

In fact, between 2007 and 2017, the organization shuttered more than 200 facilities.

Although Planned Parenthood once operated 900 facilities, today, the abortion profiteer states on its website that it operates “nearly 650 health centers throughout the United States.”

Why is Congress giving hundreds of millions of tax dollars to an organization whose numbers are falling year to year? The truth is that there are more worthy health care providers — Federally Qualified Health Centers and community health centers — and they outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities by the thousands. In fact, while Planned Parenthood patients declined nearly 17 percent from 2011 (3 million) to only 2.5 million patients today, federally funded health centers, as identified by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration, served more than 24 million patients in 2015 alone.

Some claim that if Planned Parenthood is defunded, these health centers could not handle the patient influx; however, The Radiance Foundation founder Ryan Bomberger correctly pointed out that in just two years, federally funded health centers increased their patient load by over 2 million.

PAP TESTS and BREAST EXAMS

Another area of embarrassing decline for the organization — which claims to be one of the “nation’s leading providers of high-quality, affordable health care for women, men, and young people” — is breast exam services.

Between 2004 and 2014, breast exams at Planned Parenthood decreased 60.7 percent.

Image
PP Breast Exam services declined

As Live Action has previously documented, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards admitted before Congress that her organization performs no mammograms at all. HRSA health centers, on the other hand, recorded serving more than 470,000 patients for mammograms in 2014, and 521,000 in 2015.

But what about Pap smears, which test for cervical cancer? Those are also on the decline at Planned Parenthood.

A look at the organization’s 2005 annual report (which contained an update to their 2004 service numbers) reveals that Pap tests declined 77 percent between 2004 (~1.1 million) and 2014 (~271,000).

Image
PP Pap test services declined 77 percent

In contrast, federal health centers provided more than 1.7 million Pap tests to their patients in2014, and more than 1.8 million in 2015.

CANCER SCREENINGS

Overall, cancer screenings at the nation’s largest abortion provider have plummeted 68.3 percent.

In 2004, Planned Parenthood performed a combination of 2,157,849 services (see updated 2005 annual report), which included Pap tests, breast exams, colposcopy proceduresLEEP procedures, and cryotherapy procedures.

Then, by 2014, despite adding HPV vaccinations to this category, cancer screenings declined to only 682,208.

PRENATAL SERVICES

The abortion giant has insisted that prenatal care is one of its core services that women will lose if its taxpayer funding is cut off. But an investigation conducted by Live Action proves those services are virtually nonexistent at the abortion chain.

This is in stark contrast to what Planned Parenthood used to say about prenatal services. As Live Action News previously reported, at one time (see 1996-1997 annual report), prenatal care appeared to be Planned Parenthood’s “fastest growing area.”

This is no longer the case, nor has it been for quite some time. The truth is that abortion has always been Planned Parenthood’s focus, which might explain why this once “fastest growing service” dropped nearly 44 percent between 2010 (31,098) and 2014 (17,419).

ADOPTION

Adoption did not show up in Planned Parenthood’s services totals until 2005 (see updated numbers in the 2006 annual report), as Live Action News previously reported. Prior to that year, those numbers were categorized as “referred out” and were not included in the overall services totals performed by Planned Parenthood.

Today, despite the fact that adoption services are down nearly 59 percent since 2007 and they remain referrals, Planned Parenthood adds these figures to their overall services. In other words, despite referring women out for adoption services in most cases, Planned Parenthood counts each referral as an actual service in its reports.

ABORTIONS

While services such as Pap tests, breast exams and cancer screenings are plummeting at Planned Parenthood, surprisingly (or perhaps not so surprisingly) abortions have been on the increase.

Image
Planned Parenthood does 34.9 percent of abortions

The latest Planned Parenthood report shows that the organization committed 323,999 abortions, a significant increase of 27 percent from 2004 numbers.

At the same time, while Planned Parenthood commits 34.9 percent of all U.S. abortions, it performs less than 2 percent of the country’s breast exams, less than 1 percent of Pap tests, less than 2 percent of the country’s cancer screenings for women, and zero mammograms.

If Congress wants to hand over half a billion in taxpayer dollars, shouldn’t the American people expect their money to go someplace better than an abortion-focused, less-than-trustworthy organization?

After all, Planned Parenthood has been caught haggling over prices for aborted baby parts, has been cited for overbilling abuses and Medicaid fraudviolating patient privacy, and failing to report child sexual abuse (a violation that alone should result in the organization losing millions of taxpayer dollars granted to it under the federal Title X Family Planning Program).

In summary, while the Live Action video focused primarily on cancer screening services over the past ten years, using statements by Planned Parenthood spokespersons to demonstrate how they deceptively tout declining service numbers, additional declines outlined here add to the overwhelming argument that Planned Parenthood is undeserving of taxpayer funding.

It is past time for Congress to admit the undeniable fact that, despite doubling taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood over a decade ($272.7 million in 2004 to $553.7 million in 2014), these declining health services prove that their focus is not health care; it is abortion. And this organization tragically commits one abortion every 97 seconds.

It’s time to defund Planned Parenthood.
