The former President of the Global Development Program for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has been nominated by President Obama as the new Health and Human Services Secretary after Kathleen Sebelius resigned on Thursday.
Sylvia Mathews Burwell joined the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2001 and left in 2011, saying that she wanted to be closer to aging parents.

Burwell was the Gates Foundation’s president of the Global Development Program beginning in 2006 and served as chief operating officer from 2001 to 2006. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given millions of dollars to Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the nation.
Prior to joining the Gates Foundation, Burwell served as Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget under the Clinton Administration. Burwell joined the Clinton administration in December 1992 after serving as the Deputy Director of Economic Policy for the 1992 Clinton/Gore campaign, and then as the manager of the President-elect’s Economic Transition Team. She served as Staff Director for the National Economic Council from 1993 to 1995, Chief of Staff to Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, Robert Rubin from 1995 to 1997. Burwell served in the White House as Deputy Chief of Staff to President Clinton from 1997 to 1998, where she supervised the work of the National Economic Council, the Domestic Policy Council, Council on Environmental Quality, and the White House offices of Public Liaison, Intergovernmental Affairs, Press and Communications.
In 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Burwell to lead the Office of Management and Budget. At that time Burwell was the Wal-Mart Foundation’s philanthropic director.
