The media’s glaring failure to report pro-abortion violence

violence, abuse

Violence against pro-life groups and individuals has been underreported by mainstream media outlets even though it occurs on a fairly regular basis and has for decades. While pro-life activists and organizations have received their share of threats (phone calls, mail, personal threats, online, etc.), more serious attacks of vandalism and even violent assault take place against pro-lifers with little mention in the press.

The false painting of pro-life groups as hateful and violent even led to a deranged gunman seeking to shoot staff at the pro-life Family Research Council. In 2009, Harlan Drake shot and murdered pro-life activist James Pouillon, while Pouillon displayed images of babies outside a Michigan school. Recently a man was indicted on federal charges after threatening to kill or rape members of Operation Rescue. Other threats to pro-lifers involving guns — including one by an abortionist — have thus far ended peacefully.

Live Action News previously documented an act of arson committed against Janet Folger Porter, who wrote about the incident in her book, True to Life, where she published this image of her car which was burned:

The abortion lobby, with the help of complicit pro-abortion media has portrayed pro-lifers as “violent” with regularity. The effort is led by the National Abortion Federation (NAF), which collects alleged “violence and disruption” claims from abortion providers and publishes them annually. While there are serious incidents listed, the report lacks evidence that every alleged act is being committed by pro-life advocates and not a disgruntled employee, angry family member, or random criminal. In addition, NAF pads the numbers by including incidents of non-violent civil disobedience and protest.

Unfortunately, while pro-life groups focus on rescuing babies and helping their mothers, to my knowledge, there is not currently a national system to report pro-abortion violence. However violence has been documented by Live Action News and other groups.

Brian Clowes at Human Life International collected data on pro-choice violence for many years. According to a report from Life News, Clowes published 1,200 pages of descriptions and documentation. The research, no longer published online, tracked violence committed by abortion providers (some in prison for murder), by pro-choice men who assaulted or murdered girlfriends for refusing to submit to abortion, and by pro-choice supporters who attacked pro-life sidewalk counselors.

“If people truly understood how backwards the media narrative is regarding the supposed intolerance and violence of pro-lifers, compared to that of ‘pro-choicers,’ we would be having a very different conversation about abortion in our nation today,” Clowes once told the Susan B. Anthony List.

The pro-life group Life Dynamics recently issued a report that shows abortion providers have been sexually assaulting and raping their clients for years. “In my 1996 book, Lime 5, I referenced more than 30 documented criminal cases in which abortion clinic doctors had been charged with raping or sexually assaulting their patients. In just these few cases, several hundred women were known to have been victimized,” president Mark Crutcher noted. There are also many other reported cases.

Life Dynamics also tracked incidents of forced abortion, and when the pro-life group created a tool called a “force form” to help protect women and thwart coercion, they claimed abortion advocates condemned it. Life Dynamics wrote:

Of course, the abortion industry has known for years that forced abortions are a problem – there have even been discussions about it at National Abortion Federation conferences. The discussions at these meetings reveal that the same people who advocate for “choice” to the media, politicians, and the country – [have] a stance of “convenient indifference” when it comes to women being forced to get abortions. They acknowledge its existence and talk about it in disapproving tones, while making it clear that they feel no obligation to let it influence the way they deal with these women.

In the interest of full disclosure, I conducted research for Life Dynamics’ “Under the Radar” report documenting how women who refuse to submit to abortion are attacked or assaulted. As the report details, the media is quite silent about this form of abortion-related violence:

[W]hen we were able to obtain copies of police reports, indictments, court records or other similar documentation for these cases, they would almost universally show that when a perpetrator is confronted by an unwanted pregnancy, his first response is not violence but a demand that his partner have an abortion. When violence ensues, it is inevitably a reaction to her refusal to comply.

However, the media’s coverage of these incidents often contains no mention of abortion. Instead, they either portray women who are attacked for refusing to have abortions as women who are attacked for getting pregnant, or they characterize the incident as one of simple “domestic violence” in which the victim’s pregnancy is basically inconsequential.

While the media touts pro-abortion violence statistics, consistently left out is the fact that women are injured and even killed by the abortion industry — Laura Hope Smith, and like Planned Parenthood patients Cree-Erwin and Tonya Reaves. I attended the funeral of Carolina Gutierrez and previously detailed how her agonizing death following her legal abortion took weeks. The infection was so horrific, she developed gangrene, enduring amputations prior to her death.

As we move closer to fully abolishing abortion in the United States, violence against pro-lifers is expected to intensify. But, despite the dangers, every pro-life activist and organization understands that the act of abortion itself is the most heinous form of violence on innocent preborn babies.

pregnancy centers

Abortion data just released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveals that the number of reported abortions dipped slightly (2.27 percent) from the previous year. In 2015, 638,169 abortions (down from 652,639 in 2014) were reported to CDC from 49 reporting areas excluding California, Maryland and New Hampshire. The abortion rate also decreased from 12.1 in 2014 to 11.8 in 2015.

The CDC estimates that, in 2015, 18% of all pregnancies in the United States ended in induced abortion, according to the most recent national estimates from 2010.

Highlights from the report, published November 23, 2018, are below.

Previous live births/abortions in 2015:

  • Women with one or more previous live births accounted for 59.3% of abortions.
  • Women with no previous live births accounted for 40.7% of abortions.
  • Women with three or more previous births accounted for 14.2% of abortions.
  • Women with one or more previous induced abortions accounted for 43.6% of abortions.
  • Women with no previous abortion accounted for 56.3% of abortions.
  • Women with three or more previous abortions accounted for 8.2% of abortions.

Race/ethnicity (30 reporting areas, Percentage based on 353,128 abortions):

In 2015’s report, the CDC noted that minorities are still having abortions at a higher rate, writing, “abortion rates and ratios remained 1.5 and 1.3 times higher for Hispanic compared with non-Hispanic white women and 3.6 and 3.5 times higher for non-Hispanic black compared with non-Hispanic white women.”

Non-Hispanic white women, 36.9% in 2015 (down from 38.0% in 2014)

  • Abortion rate of 6.8 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15–44 years.
  • Abortion ratio: 111 abortions per 1,000 live births.

Non-Hispanic black women, 36.0% in 2015 (same as 2014):

  • Abortion rate: 25.1 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15–44 years.
  • Abortion ratio: 390 abortions per 1,000 live births.

Hispanic women, 18.5% in 2015 (slight increase from 18.3% in 2014):

  • Abortion rate: 11.2 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15–44 years.
  • Abortion ratio: 147 abortions per 1,000 live births.

Gestational Age of abortions reported in 2015 (excluding 12 reporting areas):

  • 8 weeks or less: 279,999 (65.4%)
  • 9-13 weeks: 109,860 (25.7%)
  • 14-15 weeks: 15,146 (3.5%)
  • 16-17 weeks: 9,030 (2.1%)
  • 18-20 weeks: 8,410 (2.0%)
  • 21 weeks or greater: 5,597 (1.3%)

According to these numbers, 8.9% of children aborted in 2015  — 38,183 — were past the first trimester of pregnancy.

California, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York State, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Wyoming did not report abortions by gestation.

CDC abortion numbers are generally much lower than numbers released by Planned Parenthood’s former “special affiliate,” the Guttmacher Institute. Live Action News has previously explained some of the reasons for the variation:

  • The CDC gathers information from states which require reporting; however, the CDC admits that “although reporting to CDC is voluntary, most reporting areas provide their abortion numbers.”
  • Guttmacher gathers its figures from surveys which it claims it sends directly to all known abortion facilities, categorized by type.

According to Dr. Michael New’s analysis of the CDC report published at National Review Online (emphasis added):

The new data also demonstrate the weak abortion-reporting requirements in the U.S. The CDC doesn’t have the authority to compel states to report abortion numbers and as a result, unsurprisingly, the data are incomplete.California, Maryland, and New Hampshire all failed to report abortion data for 2015. In fact, California has not reported any abortion data to the CDC since 1997. What’s more, while the CDC has already released 2017 data on a range of public-health topics, its abortion numbers are far behind; there is almost always a lag of more than two years before abortion data is released.

Although Guttmacher has not yet released data for 2015, reported abortion numbers published by Guttmacher in 2014 showed that 926,200 were reported, and revealed that more than 100,000 abortions took place in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. This reveals a stark difference between CDC and Guttmacher data.

Medical abortions in 2015 (43 reporting areas):

Since the FDA extended the gestational age limit for medical abortion to 70 days, the CDC says, “The percentage of abortions at 9 weeks’ gestation reported as medical has increased… (from 5.0%–7.7% during 2011–2014 to 13.0% in 2015).”

      • 2015: 24.6% were early medical abortions (a nonsurgical abortion at ≤8 weeks’ gestation)
      • 2014: 22.5% of all abortions were performed by early medical abortion

According to the CDC, an abortion is defined as legal only “if it is performed by a licensed clinician within the limits of state law.” It is unclear how CDC will calculate so-called “self-managed” abortions currently being pushed by the abortion industry.

Abortion deaths in 2015:

Tragically, every abortion ends the life of an already developing preborn child, and in some instances, the life of the pregnant woman as well. According to the CDC, “Deaths of women associated with complications from abortion for 2015 are being assessed as part of CDC’s Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System. In 2014, the most recent year for which data were available, six women were identified to have died as a result of complications from legal induced abortion.”

Photo via Operation Rescue

Pro-life groups previously discovered the death of one of those women from 2014. Lakisha Wilson died from cardiopulmonary arrest during a legal abortion at Preterm in Cleveland, Ohio.

Women are frequently told that when abortions are legal, they are also safe. Unfortunately, abortion consent forms the industry requires women to sign show this is not always the case.

Over past years, due in part to the many efforts of pro-life advocates, published abortion numbers have been steadily decreasing. According to the CDC report, “From 2006 to 2015, the total number of reported abortions decreased 24% (from 842,855), the abortion rate decreased 26% (from 15.9 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15–44 years), and the abortion ratio decreased 19% (from 233 abortions per 1,000 live births).”

Abortion complications — including those resulting from the abortion pill — are only required to be reported by about half of U.S. states.

While the trajectory is heading in the right direction, there is still much work to be done to make abortion unthinkable and return protection to persons in the womb.

These are historic lows since the year following Roe.
CDC Abortion Surveillance report from 1973 indicates that a total of 615,831 legal procedures were reported from 50 states and the District of Columbia and New York City.

How many women died from illegal abortions prior to Roe v. Wade?

Pro-abortion professor testifies against Heartbeat Bill using bogus, debunked abortion statistics

Prior to the legalization of abortion, those who sought to legally end the lives of preborn children falsely marketed their position by claiming that women were dying by the thousands (and even millions) from illegal abortions. However, there is absolutely no evidence to back up those figures.

Despite this, those figures continue to be repeated by abortion advocates any time they sense that the so-called “right” to abortion is potentially in jeopardy.

A pro-abortion professor, testifying under oath before Congress, unfortunately used these disputed and highly suspect statistics regarding the number of women who died from illegal abortions in an effort to oppose the federal pro-life Heartbeat bill, HR490, which proposes to stop abortions at a point when it can be documented that the preborn child’s heartbeat can be detected:

Prof Priscilla Smith testifies HR490 Heartbeat abortion bill

In her testimonyProfessor Priscilla Smith claimed that 5,000 women died annually from illegal abortions prior to Roe v. Wade:

Women have been obtaining abortions since the beginning of time, before Roe when abortions were illegal… An estimated 1.2 million women each year still resorted to illegal abortion in the US. As many as 5000 of these women — already born – living, breathing, lungs working, hearts beating, women, many with children at home who depended on them — 5,000 of them died each year as a result of illegal abortions and many more were severely injured. This is the world we would return to if HR490 went into effect….

But the facts don’t agree with Smith’s claims. A 1975 report by National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, entitled, “Legalized Abortion and the Public Health: Report of a Study,” disputes these statistics (emphasis added):

It is difficult to find credible estimates of the number of deaths associated with illegal abortion. One estimate, which has been frequently quoted, is between 5,000 and 10,000 deaths per year. That is hardly plausible, considering that the total number of deaths of women aged 15-44 from all causes in the United States is approximately 50,000 annually, and the total number of deaths due to abortion reported by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has been below 500 since 1958 and below 100 since 1971.

The 5,000 figure originates from a piecemeal of several sources based largely on assumptions, and comes straight from the largest abortion lobby group in the nation: National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL.)  NARAL’s footnote quotes from a source that allegedly “discussed Dr. Christopher Tietze’s estimate of nearly 8,000 deaths from illegal abortion annually in the United States.” The truth is that Tietze disputed the 5,000 to 10,000 number, as did records of maternal deaths reviewed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the years just prior to national legalization.

NARAL Footnotes on illegal abortion deaths

In fact, in Lawrence Lader’s book “Abortion,” also sourced, he clearly states, “Tietze places the figure nearer 1,000.” But, as Dr. John C. Willke explains in the video below, that trend decreased over time:

Tietze was a senior consultant to the Center for Policy Studies of the Population Council, a radical organization founded by John D. Rockefeller III. That organization’s second president was Frederic Osborn, a founding member of the American Eugenics Society who signed Margaret Sanger’s “Citizens Committee for Planned Parenthood,” published in her review in April of 1938. (Osborn may have coined Planned Parenthood’s “Every Child a Wanted Child” slogan, and once wrote, “Eugenic goals are most likely attained under a name other than eugenics.”)

In 1967, Dr. Tietze, who was speaking at a conference on abortion sponsored by the Harvard Divinity School and Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, called the 5,000 illegal abortion deaths, “unmitigated nonsense,” according to a September 13, 1967 article in the Berkshire Eagle.  The paper went on to give substantially fewer numbers by Tietze, writing, “The known deaths attributed to abortion in 1964 were 247 and he thinks it is fairly safe to estimate that the real figure may be double that, even a little more, but certainly no more than a thousand.” Note that Dr. Tietze was no pro-lifer: In 1973, he was awarded Planned Parenthood’s infamousMargaret Sanger Award, named after a eugenicist who gave at least one speech to the Ku Klux Klan.

The Kingsport News reported on that same conference, pointing out that Tietze disputed the reported illegal abortion totals, which some claimed ranged from 200,000 to 1.2 million annually. The paper quotes Tietze as saying, “we have no real basis for guessing which extreme is closer to the truth.”

Tietze disputes illegal abortion deaths, 1967

Tietze, who favored abortion on demand, also opined that legalizing abortion would “not have a big impact on mortality.”

The Register, a Virginia paper, notes in its article entitled, “Supporters of Liberal Abortion Laws use Inflated Statistics, Expert says,” that Tietze suggested that the larger numbers (5,000 to 10,000) were made up to scare politicians into legalizing abortion. “The higher estimates are made by people who feel in order to raise sympathy for liberalized abortion laws they have to make people afraid.”

Tietze Illegal Abortion Deaths Inflated 1967

Tietze Illegal Abortion Deaths Inflated 1967 b

Tietze was right.

Dr. Bernard Nathanson, one of the early founders of NARAL (then known as the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws), revealed that he and his colleagues fabricated the large numbers of deaths from illegal abortion in an attempt to sway public opinion toward making abortion legal.

In his book, “The Abortion Papers,” Dr. Nathanson admitted that the 5,000 to 10,000 figure which was fed “to the public and the media in the late 1960’s,” was fabricated because it was a “nice, round, shocking figure.” And, just like they do today, the media — willingly and with no documentation — repeated that figure with no demand for proof.

However, there was data available, and it didn’t support those fabricated figures.

On October 19, 1959, Mary S. Calderone, a medical director of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, presented a paper before the Maternal and Child Health Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA) at the Eighty-Seventh Annual Meeting in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where she also gave far fewer numbers than Professor Smith:

In 1957 there were only 260 deaths in the whole country attributed to abortions of any kind. In New York City in 1921 there were 144 abortion deaths, in 1951 there were only 15; and, while the abortion death rate was going down so strikingly in that 30-year period, we know what happened to the population and the birth rate.

In 1967, New York Assemblyman, Albert Blumenthal, who sponsored a law to legalize abortion that year, was quoted by the media as claiming that between 35 and 60 deaths from illegal abortions were reported in New York City annually. That same year, an Illinois Health Director by the name of Dr. Herbert Ratner called the 5,000 to 10,000 figure “outlandish,” noting, “This hardly leaves room for deaths from other causes.”

1967 article Illegal abortion Chicago Tribune

Dr. Ratner also correctly warned that the liberalization of abortion, which he called “exterminative medicine,” would start a dangerous trend in medicine — a prophetic insight America has sadly seen come true.

By 1969, the very first abortion surveillance report was published by the Centers for Disease Control, noting a “lack of accurate incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality data” on abortion. At that time, five states had passed abortion legislation and 24 others had bills under review. According to this same CDC report, in 1966, the National Center for Health Statistics reported 189 maternal deaths from abortion complications.  And, while no one would diminish those numbers, they are a far cry from the 5,000 touted by Professor Smith.

By 1970, the CDC reported that in just a six month period (July to December), out of sixteen reported abortions in New York City, eight women — yes, HALF — had died from legal (not illegal) abortions. In total, the 1970 report states that 25 women died in New York City (where abortion had been liberalized), and eleven of those were from illegal abortions. The report also noted that Black and Puerto Rican women suffered higher legal abortion mortality rates.

According to that CDC document, “although there was substitution of legal for illegal abortion deaths, no significant decrease in total abortion mortality occurred following institution of the new law….”

CDC Abortion Deaths, 1970

In 1972, the year prior to national legalization, CDC reports revealed that deaths from illegal abortion were nothing close to Professor Smith’s 5,000 figure. In this table from the CDC report (shown below), just 39 women died from illegal abortion in 1972 while 24 died from legal abortion.

CDC Abortion deaths 1972 to 1990

Live Action News previously documented that the majority of illegal abortions were performed by physicians, and many of those same doctors went on to perform legal abortions, some of whom have seriously injured and even killed women. But, today, instead of protecting the women who are being butchered or are dying from legal abortion, advocates like Professor Smith spew made up numbers from the illegal abortion days.

It would appear that abortion advocates do not actually care about the safety of women or even about real statistics; they care only about legalizing abortion at any cost.

CDC 2014: Abortions decrease overall; increase among Black women; 4 women died (2013)

Abortions have dropped 20 percent over the last 10 years

A newly released abortion statistics report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveals a reduction in the number of abortions reported in 2014. According to the CDC, over the last 10 years, abortion has seen a significant drop in the United States, with a 20 percent decrease.

CDC’s Abortion Surveillance report, released on November 22, 2017, states that 652,639 abortions were reported in 2014. This represents a two percent drop from 2013. In addition to abortion totals, the abortion rate also decreased two percent (from 12.4 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15–44 years), and the abortion ratio decreased 7 percent (from 199 abortions per 1,000 live births). The CDC report also revealed that four women died from legal abortion in 2013.

CDC Abortion stats 2014

In October of 2017, Guttmacher, the former “special affiliate” and research arm of Planned Parenthood, reported an abortion total of 926,200 in 2014, far more than what the CDC claims. The CDC admits it was “unable to obtain the total number,” and pointed to “requirements by the individual reporting areas” as a reason. The CDC claims Guttmacher’s numbers are higher because Guttmacher uses “numerous active follow-up techniques to increase the completeness of the data obtained through its periodic national census of abortion providers,” a fact Live Action News has previously documented.

Neither the CDC nor Guttmacher counts the use of emergency contraception such as Ella or Plan B in their abortion numbers. This is despite the fact that each of these drugs clearly state on their label that they can prevent implantation, thus aborting a life that has begun. (There would be no way of knowing if these drugs had actually caused an abortion in a particular instance, however, and therefore, there is no way to report.)

The CDC’s report indicates that abortion data was provided voluntarily by the central health agencies of 49 reporting areas (the District of Columbia; New York City; and 47 states, excluding California, Maryland, and New Hampshire). Here are a few key findings:

Previous Abortions

The fact that women have multiple abortions is kept fairly quiet by the abortion industry, but the CDC report reveals that this does indeed occur, and more than you might expect. In 2014, there were 40 areas in the U.S. that reported the number of previous abortions, as follows:

  • No previous abortion: 55.1% (251,108)
  • One previous abortion: 24.7% (112,337)
  • Two previous abortions: 11.6% (52,827)
  • Three or more previous abortions 8.6% (39,111)

Nearly 45 percent of women having abortions had already had at least one committed previously.

Majority of Abortions

In 2014, women in their 20s accounted for the majority of abortions and had the highest abortion rates; women in their 30s and older accounted for a much smaller percentage of abortions and had lower abortion rates. In 2014, women aged 20–24 and 25–29 years accounted for 32.2% and 26.7% (totaled, nearly 59%) of all reported abortions among the 46 areas that reported by maternal age. Women aged 20-24 and 25-29 also had the highest abortion rates: 21.3 and 18.4 abortions per 1,000 women.

Abortions and Race/Ethnicity

Out of the 652,639 reported abortions in 2014, 393,448 abortions from only 30 reporting areas accounted for race/ethnicity. This amounted to one additional reporting area than 2013 and may account for the slight increase in abortion percentages among white and Black women (a .7 percent increase and a .4 percent increase respectively).

CDC Abortion Surveillance 2014 race: Black abortions, Hispanic, White

CDC Abortion Surveillance 2014 race/ethnicity

  • White Women (non Hispanic): 38% (149,377)
  • Black Women (non Hispanic): 36% (141,825)
  • Hispanic Women: 18.3% (72,063)
  • Other: 7.7% (30,183)

For years, pro-lifers have contended that abortion disproportionately affects the African American Community. They point to US Census Bureau data estimates, which show that in 2014, while Blacks made up approximately 13 percent of the US population, CDC figures for 2014 reveal that non-Hispanic Black women accounted for 36 percent of reported abortions that reported this criterion.

Non-Hispanic Black women continue to have the highest abortion rate (26.6 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15–44 years) and ratio (391 abortions per 1,000 live births).

According to abortion numbers reported by Planned Parenthood‘s former “special affiliate,” The Guttmacher Institute (founded by a leader of the American Eugenics Society), 28 percent of abortions reported to them in 2014 were committed on Black women, 39 percent of abortions on white women, 25 percent on Hispanic women, and 9 percent on women of other races.

Reported Abortions by Gestational Age

Only 40 reporting areas gave the CDC an estimate of gestational age, excluding 12 areas (California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York State, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Wyoming) that either did not report, did not report by gestational age, or did not meet reporting standards.

The CDC reports that 91.5 percent of abortions that report gestational age were done at less than 13 weeks, 7.2 percent between 14 and 20 weeks, and 1.3 percent at more than 21 weeks.

Additional gestational numbers break down as follows:

  • Less than 8 weeks: 67% (295,206)
  • 9-13 weeks: 24.5% (108,014)
  • 14-15 weeks: 3.3% (14,572)
  • 16-17 weeks: 2.0% (8,780)
  • 18-20 weeks: 1.9% (8,180)
  • 21 weeks and above: 1.3% (5,578)

Notably, just 440,330 of the 652,639 reported abortions were identified by gestational age. What this reveals is that while the abortion industry would like the public to believe that late-term abortion is not happening in the U.S., 212,309 abortions were not classified by gestational age. How many abortions are committed late-term without being reported as such, or in the second trimester without public knowledge? The most common second trimester procedure is the D&E abortion.

Medical Abortions

In 2014, 43 areas reported by method type. While medical abortions (also called medication abortions, abortion pill, and RU-486) have been increasing, the data reveals that many women still opt for surgical procedures. In the areas that reported medical abortions, 22.6 percent of these abortions were medical abortions committed at less than eight weeks, 1.5 percent were medical abortions committed at greater than eight weeks, 67.4 percent were surgical abortions committed at less than 13 weeks, and 8.6 percent were surgical abortions committed at greater than 13 weeks.

The use of early medical abortion increased one percent from 2013 to 2014. Over a ten-year period, between 2005 and 2014, surgical abortions decreased 14 percent.

Deaths From Legal Abortion

According to the CDC, data on induced abortion-related deaths that occurred from 1972–2012 were previously published, and possible abortion-related deaths that occurred during 2014–2017 are now being assessed.

However, the CDC does report that four women died from legal abortion in 2013. This number was not available when it released 2013 abortion totals last year.

A previous Live Action News report identified at least two of the four women who are known to have died from legal abortion in 2013:

While the CDC has not reported abortion deaths after 2013 yet, it is known that multiple women have died due to a botched abortion from 2014-2016. A Live Action News article identified the following women’s abortion deaths:

Live Action News also summarized previous abortion deaths (2008-2012) compiled by Janet Morana and published by the Daily Caller:
  • 2012: Four deaths from legal abortion, three of whom are unknown. Only one, Tonya Reaves, made headlines. Reaves died after a Chicago Planned Parenthood abortionist (Mandy Gittler, who is now employed by Planned Parenthood in Michiganleft her to hemorrhage for five hours after her 16 week abortion without medical care and without calling 911.
  • 2011: Two deaths from legal abortion, identities unknown
  • 2010: Ten deaths from legal abortion, all unknown except for one — Alexandra Nunez from Queens, New York, who died after an artery was severed during her abortion, leading to cardiac arrest
  • 2009: Eight deaths from legal abortion, with only two identities known — Karnamaya Mongar, who died after a painkiller overdose at Kermit Gosnell’s Philadelphia “house of horrors,” and Ying Chen, who died as a result of what the OC Register called “a toxic reaction to anesthetic.”
  • 2008: Twelve deaths from legal abortion, all identities unknown

Keisha Atkins died legal abortion

In 2017, Abortion Free New Mexico obtained the autopsy report for Keisha Marie Atkins, 23, who died from her legal abortion on February 4, 2017. Atkins had a late-term abortion, initiated at Southwestern Women’s Options (SWO), in Albuquerque, New Mexico. SWO is the largest abortion facility in the U.S. that openly “specializes” in abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy. SWO is also the facility involved in the ongoing baby part harvesting investigation in New Mexico. The facility provided whole aborted baby brains for a students’ summer camp, likely without parents’ knowledge.

Conclusion

By its own admission, the CDC “cannot be used alone to calculate national case-fatality rates (number of legal induced abortion-related deaths per 100,000 reported legal induced abortions in the United States) because certain states did not report abortion data every year during this period.”

However, abortions have been steadily decreasing nationwide — due in part to pro-life activism on the sidewalks of abortion facilities, as well as legislation, education, and assistance to pregnant mothers. In ten years (2005 to 2014), among the same 48 areas that reported every year during this period, the CDC calculates that reported abortions have decreased by 20 percent.

Woman DEAD from Abortion at Late-Term Facility Currently Under Criminal Investigation

PRESS RELEASE
(By Cheryl Sullenger)

Albuquerque, NM – A woman has died as the result of a late-term abortion process initiated at Southwestern Women’s Options (SWO), in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which is the largest abortion facility in the U.S. that openly specializes in abortions throughout all nine months of pregnancy.

Abortion Free New Mexico obtained the autopsy report for Keisha Marie Atkins, 23, who died on February 4, 2017, after being transported from SWO to UNM Hospital. Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico has also been in communication with members of Atkins’ family.

Operation Rescue is assisting Abortion Free New Mexico with an investigation of this tragedy.

This abortion-related death is particularly troubling in light of a criminal investigation that is currently underway by the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office into Southwestern Women’s Options and UNM. UNM has aggressively worked to increase second and third trimester abortions at SWO, which, in turn, is UNM’s largest provider of aborted baby tissue and organs. A U.S. House investigation found this arrangement violates state and federal law, despite stonewalling and obfuscation on the part of UNM and SWO.

Atkins reported to SWO on January 31, 2017, for a four day late-term abortion procedure that was to be done by eighty-year old abortion facility owner Curtis Boyd. It is believed that Atkins was six months pregnant or more.

Four days later, on February 3, 2017, Atkins returned to SWO for the completion of the abortion where she displayed labored breathing and signs of sepsis, a systemic, life-threatening infection.

At 12:04 p.m. on February 3, an ambulance was called to transport Atkins to the hospital, but was later cancelled, raising questions of how and when Atkins actually received emergency medical help.

Once at the UNM Medical Center, Atkins’ condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting UNM staff to perform an emergency D&E abortion procedure to remove her baby through dismemberment.

During the procedure, Atkins suffered cardiac arrest. Efforts to revive her were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at 12:10 a.m. on February 4, 2017.

An autopsy was conducted at the UNM Health Sciences Center by the UNM Office of the Medical Investigator, which also serves as the Bernadillo County Coroner. The OMI determined that Atkins cause of death was “pulmonary thromboembolism due to pregnancy,” in other words, blood clots in the lungs.

However, a careful review of the autopsy findings indicates that this cause of death is a whitewash meant to blame Atkins’ pregnancy for her death instead of what appears to be a mismanaged late-term abortion procedure.

“UNM is a biased promoter of abortion that is attempting to shift blame onto Atkins’ pregnancy, instead of the abortion, where the blame rightfully belongs,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue. “Keisha Atkins and her family deserve the truth, not a cover-up. But with UNM and SWO, covering up their misdeeds has become standard operating procedure.”

There is evidence that Atkins suffered from sepsis, a bacterial infection caused by the four-day abortion process, which brought about symptoms consistent with Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). Atkins suffered hemorrhaging in her brain, a buildup of fluid around her lungs, and other symptoms of DIC that the autopsy ignored.

Pro-life leaders believe there is a way to keep other women from suffering Atkins’ fate.

“We call on the New Mexico Attorney General to step up their criminal investigation, and we call on the State Medical Board to take a hard, honest look at Keisha Atkins’ death,” Newman said. “Curtis Boyd should be stopped from practicing, and the dangerous Southwestern Women’s Options should be shut down for good.”

“Coverups are as heinous as the crimes, and the crimes of the abortion cartel in New Mexico have been covered up for too many years. It is time for Hector Balderas to do his job or resign. It is time for the UNM Regents to do their jobs or resign. It is time for the New Mexico Medical Board to fully investigate Keisha’s death without bias,” said Fr. Stephen Imbarrato, The Protest Priest.

“We join the family of Keisha Atkins as they grieve her death from serious complications during a late term abortion at Southwestern Women’s Options. She was a 23-year old vibrant woman with her whole life ahead of her that was tragically cut short,” stated Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico. “For years we have worked to expose the barbaric nature of late term abortion in New Mexico and sought to bring accountability to the unregulated and unaccountable Abortion Cartel. Now more than ever, we need leadership in our city and state to take a bold stand and the necessary steps to prevent the needless deaths of women and their children through late term abortion.”

Don’t believe the lie that making abortion illegal will cause thousands of women to die

From Live Action News | Article text starts here

As society rejects abortion in larger and larger percentages and the humanity of the preborn child becomes overwhelmingly obvious, the radical abortion lobby reverts to false claims used successfully in the past — especially the lie that if abortion was ever again made illegal, thousands of women would die.

Embedded in this lie is the assumption that legal abortion means safe abortion, and this is based on the false claim that when abortion used to be illegal, thousands (or even millions) of women died because of it.

While this false claim has spread like wildfire, the truth is that Dr. Bernard Nathanson — one of the early founders of the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) who later repented of his pro-abortion actions and views, revealed that he and his colleagues fabricated the large numbers of deaths from illegal abortion in an attempt to sway public opinion toward making abortion legal:

We persuaded the media that the cause of permissive abortion was a liberal, enlightened, sophisticated one…. Knowing that if a true poll were taken, we would be soundly defeated, we simply fabricated the results of fictional polls. We announced to the media that we had taken polls and that 60 percent of Americans were in favor of permissive abortion. This is the tactic of the self-fulfilling lie. Few people care to be in the minority. We aroused enough sympathy to sell our program of permissive abortion by fabricating the number of illegal abortions done annually in the U.S. The actual figure was approaching 100,000, but the figure we gave to the media repeatedly was 1,000,000.

This lie appeared to work.

During the debate to liberalize abortion in New York, the fabrication about illegal abortions actually swayed one representative to change his vote on the floor, opening the door to abortion on demand in that state.

The deciding vote was cast by Democrat Assemblyman George Michaels, who told the LA Times that for years he had been told by local party leaders not to vote for the repeal of the abortion ban, and he pledged not to.

For two years he had followed the party line. “I would vote no, hoping the bill would pass,” he said. “I was not doing the right thing.”

George Michaels

In April, 1970, Michaels had a conversation with his daughter-in-law, Sarah, and the topic of illegal abortions came up. Michaels told the LA Times that Sarah said, “In the meantime, thousands of women will be mutilated and die because of that stupid Legislature.”

The paper describes Michaels’ response and what occurred next:

“Boy, that rocked me,” Michaels says “That rocked me.”

Michaels returned to Albany still not knowing how he would vote, he says. “I was hoping somebody would switch; that it wouldn’t be George Michaels.”

The vote was taken. Michaels voted against the repeal. Then, just before the clerk announced the vote, he stood up and asked the Speaker to change his vote.

“When it came to a tie vote, I could not go through that charade any longer,” he said. “I knew my career was finished.”

And, based on a lie, the Assemblyman voted to repeal New York’s abortion laws, opening up a floodgate of abortions in the state.

Since those early years, the abortion lobby has stuck with that lie, and the media has been more than willing to help.

A report authored by Merry Merrifield and published in the Chicago Tribune claimed that in 1964, 264 deaths had occurred from illegal abortion, according to the Department of Health Education and welfare (HEW).

Illegal abortion deaths Planned Parenthood 1991

In 1991, Planned Parenthood published its version of a “Fact Sheet” on illegal abortion deaths. These are some of the claims about illegal abortions made in that publication:

Between 1845 and 1970… desperation forced millions of women to turn to dangerous back-alley, or self-induced abortions.

Thousands of women died, at least 100 each year.

In 1972, although abortion by then was legal in at least 11 states, 330,000 illegal abortions were performed nationwide. At least 100 women died.

Well, Planned Parenthood wasn’t even close.

Statistics show that in the year prior to Roe (1972), the Center for Disease Control’s abortion surveillance reports disputed Planned Parenthood’s alleged “facts.” In this table from the CDC report (shown below) just 39 women died from illegal abortion in 1972 while 24 died from legal abortion.

CDC Abortion deaths 1972 to 1990

What Planned Parenthood doesn’t typically say is that one of its own former presidents, Alan Guttmacher, made it clear that a majority of those who committed the supposedly dangerous illegal abortions which killed (according to them) “thousands of women,” were none other than trained physicians.

A 1967 Harvard Crimson article documented the statement, writing, “Seventy per cent of the illegal abortions in the country are performed by reputable physicians, each thinking himself a knight in white armor.”

Despite all the past rhetoric regarding illegal abortion, the reality is that it is becoming more and more difficult to convince the American public that “legal” abortion is safe — and this is for good reason.

Cree Erwin-Sheppard died in July 2016, a few days after having an abortion at Kalamazoo’s Planned Parenthood facility on West Michigan Avenue. The 24-year-old had an abortion there on June 30, according to Operation Rescue. (The pro-life group has since filed a complaint against the Kalamazoo Planned Parenthood, seeking a revocation of its license to conduct abortions.) Local pro-life activist Lynn Mills, who uncovered the woman’s tragic death and has been working to expose all the facts of this case, quickly organized a rally to demand Justice for Cree.

Surprisingly, no one from the abortion lobby cared to weigh in.

The woman’s brother, Tyler Sheppard, even flew to Michigan to speak out against what Planned Parenthood did to his sister.

A portion of his statement can be heard in the video below, following an excerpt of the emotional 911 call made by Cree’s mother, who discovered her daughter’s body:

According to a report by Operation Rescue:

Sheppard displayed a copy of Cree’s medical record obtained by another family member from Bronson Hospital in Battle Creek where she had sought help for severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting two days after having a 12-week abortion at Planned Parenthood in Kalamazoo.

At the hospital, records show that an ultrasound discovered “products of conception” inside the uterus consistent with an “incomplete miscarriage,” the hospital’s term for an incomplete abortion.

“They saw baby parts still inside of my sister and they still sent her home . . . I want to know what happened,” Sheppard said, questioning why she was not treated at this hospital.

Tonya Reaves died from abortion at Planned Parenthood

An autopsy was performed on July 4, 2016, which showed that a uterine perforation was discovered. Blood clots were found in her uterine artery and lungs, which caused her death. Blood and urine were sent for toxicology screening.

But Operation Rescue states that “when the autopsy was finally released on March 9, 2017, all mention of the abortion, uterine perforation, and IUD insertion were redacted along with the salient portions of the cause of death while other sensitive information was left intact.”

While answers are still forth coming in Cree’s abortion death, there is no debate in what happened to another 24-year-old Planned Parenthood patient by the name of Tonya Reaves.

Reaves died following a fatal second trimester abortion which she received at an Illinois Planned Parenthood on July 20, 2012.

The care — or shall we say lack of care — that Planned Parenthood gave to Reaves was so egregious that Planned Parenthood of Illinois, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation were ordered to pay Tonya’s family $2 million in a wrongful death settlement.

Tragically, Reaves and Erwin-Sheppard are just two examples of a growing list of women who have died after believing the lie that legalizing abortion made it safe. The names of these women haunt abortion supporters who refuse to acknowledge their tragic end.

Media elevates abortionist with 1year of Tx license as “expert” on abortion safety

Posted in Abortion Death List, Abortion History, Abortionist, Illegal abortion, Texas Abortion, Texas abortion clinics with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 22, 2015 by saynsumthn

A Texas abortion provider has posed a fascinating question to a local news outlet by asking how many women will wind up in the ER? It is a great question and one pro-lifers wished the media would report on given the rash of abortion related emergencies that continue to go on all across the nation in relative silence.

Planned Parenthood spokane 911 Oct 2015

But, despite the mounds of evidence that abortion is not safe, are being closed for unsafe conditions or that women are being rushed out of clinics and Planned Parenthood centers in ambulances, and they sometimes die or that abortion doctors and staff are not the pristine pillars of society they paint themselves to be, the media hides the truth from American women.

And in a brilliant marketing scheme along with the collaboration of the main stream media the abortion industry also hides the truth from American women. In fact, what the abortion doctor mentioned above was really complaining about was not the injuries and deaths from legal abortion, but the fact that laws regulating abortion clinics are also closing many due in large part to the fact that abortion facilities are generally incapable of complying with basic surgical standards. So, how should we fix the problem, by removing the regulations, of course! And how does he sway the media to do an exclusive on him, he claims women are having illegal abortions.

Texas Ab doc

Abortionist Bhavik Kumar, works at Whole Woman’s abortion clinics in San Antonio and Fort Worth. Kumar is a graduate of Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas and completed his 3rd and 4th year of medical school at the El Paso, Texas branch in 2010 and then completed his residency training this past July, 2013. He is being promoted as an expert in abortion when, in fact, he was only licensed by the State of Texas last year.

Texas Ab doc 2

In his interview with the Texas Observer Kumar admits that there are few doctors who will do abortions, “there’s less of us providing this care, so it can be isolating for us,” he said.

Despite the fact that unsafe conditions were present inside Texas abortion facilities, the abortionist was complaining about the impact of Texas’ HB2, one of the most restrictive laws in the country which has closed a number of abortion clinics statewide. He claimed that women who are seeking abortions and coming from the border have tried self-aborting where he asked, “how many women will wind up in the ER and not come to the this clinic instead?”

Adding, “The reason that they have to drive that far is because there are fewer clinics, given other laws like the admitting privileges and ambulatory surgical center requirement. And, you have to pay mostly out of pocket, or use abortion funds, in order to pay for your procedure. So, that sometimes adds cost because you’ve had to wait an extra few weeks because you couldn’t access a clinic, you have to stay overnight. If you have kids, you have to find somebody to take care of your kids, [take] time off of work. If you’re not able to get the funds within 24 hours, you have to wait even longer to get the money to pay for it.”

Wrong question Mr. abortion doctor, the real question is how many women are rushed to the ER from legal abortion? It is obvious what Bhavik Kumar is doing here. He is resurrecting an old tactic, used successfully in the early days of legalized abortion and that is to claim that women die or will be hospitalized when abortion is illegal or cannot be accessed easily.

NARAL Pin

Case in point, during the debate to liberalize abortion in New York, the issue of unsafe abortions swayed one representative to change his vote on the floor, opening the door to abortion on demand in that state.

NY Constance Cook

Assemblywoman Constance E. Cook stood to the floor during that 1970 debate to push the lie of unsafe abortion, stating, “I submit that we have abortion on demand in the state of New York right now. Any woman that wants an abortion can get one–if she has $25, she has it done here, under the most abominable circumstances,” and that prohibition only drives abortion underground.”

The deciding vote was cast by Democrat Assemblyman, George Michaels, who told the LA Times that for years he had been told by local party leaders not to vote for the repeal of the abortion ban, and he pledged not to. For two years he had followed the party line.

ASSY George Michaels cast vote to legalize abortion

I would vote no, hoping the bill would pass,” he said. “I was not doing the right thing.”

In April, 1970, the night before he left for Albany, Michaels spent an evening with his daughter-in-law, Sarah.

Sarah asked him what would happen when the abortion bill came up for a vote again. There was a chance it would pass, he told her.

What if it doesn’t?” she asked.

    Maybe next year,” he said.

Michaels says he has never been able to forget what his son’s young wife told him next:

In the meantime, thousands of women will be mutilated and die because of that stupid Legislature.

Boy, that rocked me,” Michaels says. “That rocked me.”

The National Abortion Rights Action League, NARAL, also lied about women dying from illegal abortions. One of their early founders, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, who later repented of his pro-abortion actions and views, described what they did early on:

Bernard Nathanson

“We persuaded the media that the cause of permissive abortion was a liberal, enlightened, sophisticated one,” recalls the movement’s co-founder. “Knowing that if a true poll were taken, we would be soundly defeated, we simply fabricated the results of fictional polls. The actual figure was approaching 100,000, but the figure we gave to the media repeatedly was 1,000,000.”

McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Robert P. George breaks it down further when he writes this about the NARAL founder:

Nathanson and his friends lied—relentlessly and spectacularly—about the number of women who died each year from illegal abortions. Their pitch to voters, lawmakers, and judges was that women are going to seek abortion in roughly equal numbers whether it is lawful or not. The only effect of outlawing it, they claimed, is to limit pregnant women to unqualified and often uncaring practitioners, “back alley butchers.” So, Nathanson and others insisted, laws against abortion are worse than futile: they do not save fetal lives; they only cost women’s lives.

abortion-rally-1970s

For clarification, stats show that, in the year prior to Roe, the CDC disputed the lie that thousands of women died from illegal abortion as shown in this table from their surveillance report on abortion.

cdc-illegal-abortion-deaths

Groups like Live Action News, Operation Rescue, and many others have been documenting the horrendous way that women are treated by abortion providers. And, it wasn’t that long ago when the State of Pennsylvania closed what has been dubbed a “House of Horrors” abortion clinic owned by the now convicted abortionist Kermit Gosnell. His abortion clinic, like many in the United States was operating legally for many years while abortion advocates lobbied for little to no restrictions on abortion clinics. Gosnell, who was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder in the death of three babies that prosecutors said were delivered alive and subsequently killed, and was responsible for the abortion-related death of one of his patents was no anomaly. His story and the fate of the women and tragically the babies taken to his “House of Horrors” facility are the true mirror of unrestricted abortion in America.

While Kumar and the abortion lobby in general try and rehash old scare tactics about women dying in the streets if abortion is in any way restricted, they remain silent about women their industry injures along the way. But, as long as Kumar is worried about women being rushed to the ER, this reminder from the Associated Press describing Gosnell’s LEGAL abortion clinic should be of interest:

Women went to Dr. Kermit Gosnell to end their pregnancies. Many came away with life-threatening infections and punctured organs; some still had fetal parts inside them when they arrived at nearby hospitals in dire need of emergency care.
