Merle Hoffman Choices Abortion

An article published by a New York media outlet has indicated that a long standing abortion facility owner netted ten million dollars last year. Crain’s New York Business featured abortion facility operator Merle Hoffman, president of Choices Women’s Medical Center in New York. Hoffman’s facility commits abortions up to 24 weeks. A bio about Hoffman reveals that her 2016 revenue was “about $10 million.” A deeper look at Hoffman’s past reveals how tens of thousands of abortions — and her own abortion years ago — have affected her.

In the video below, former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino describes the most common abortion committed in the U.S. from 13-24 weeks.

Abortion — Taking Children’s Lives — for Profit

Making a large profit from abortion is not new, however. Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest tax-funded abortion chain, is known for having abortion “quotas” and throwing pizza parties after its staff commits extra abortions beyond the required number, thus raking in more money for the facility.

Recently analyzed data from Planned Parenthood (analysis conducted by American Life League, or ALL) reveals that the average salary of a CEO at one of Planned Parenthood’s 56 affiliates rose 22 percent in the last two years. The top twelve employees at the mothership, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, have collectively seen their average salaries go up 13 percent in two years.

ALL found that with an average income of $237,999, these Planned Parenthood CEOs are in the top five percent of all workers in the United States. The group noted that Planned Parenthood’s national spokesperson and president, Cecile Richards, has seen her income explode by a whopping 62 percent, making close to a million dollars a year ($957,952) at the so-called non-profit. Nearly 41% of Planned Parenthood’s budget came from taxpayers in 2015, according to the abortion chain’s own 2015-2016 annual report.

While Planned Parenthood tries to weasel its way out of appearing like the well-funded and well-paying abortion chain it is, Merle Hoffman is honest. Even though it is relatively taboo for anyone in the abortion industry to admit that killing babies is profitable, Hoffman acknowledges that she makes millions.

In a book she published years ago called “Intimate Wars,” Hoffman admitted she was “making money off the movement” and explained that making money from abortion “could be said of every abortion provider.”

In fact, as Hoffman put it, “I was quite pleasantly surprised when I made my first million dollars.”

“Choices” for Women

A 2012 article in The Feminist Press described how Hoffman’s facility, Choices, began, nearly 41 years ago.

The article details how Hoffman teamed up with Dr. Martin Gold to open the Choices abortion facility, writing:

As the cofounder of the Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York (HIP), the first not-for-profit health maintenance organization (HMO) on the east coast, Gold and a colleague approached HIP’s board of directors and proposed to offer abortion services for their subscribers…. A year later, in 1971, Flushing Women’s Medical Center – later renamed Choices Women’s Medical Center – opened its doors.

Although Hoffman opened her first facility in the 1970’s just after New York legalized abortion, Choices shows it was licensed with the state as a corporation in 1985.

In the beginning stages, Hoffman said the abortion facility saw six or seven patients and charged $77.00 per procedure. In 2011, Hoffman admitted to Forbes that her clinic had performed “almost 20,000 abortions a year….” “Now,” she added, “we see about 10,000.”

Hoffman appears to enjoy promoting herself and her so-called accomplishments within the abortion movement on a blog operated in her name. She says she became politically active after passage of the Hyde Amendment, which prohibited most federal tax dollars from funding abortions.

As a result of Hyde, Merle Hoffman began publicly speaking out in favor of abortion.

Co-Founder of the National Abortion Federation

In 1977, Hoffman bragged that she co-founded the National Abortion Federation (NAF), formerly known as the National Abortion Council (NAC). She detailed the events in “Intimate Wars,” reminiscing about a 1976 invitation from the National Association of Abortion Facilities (NNAF) to attend a national meeting of providers.

Hoffman writes that within a few months of attending that meeting, she was nominated NNAF’s vice president.

She credits her marketing style of promoting herself as an advocate for women, rather than as someone who does abortions as appealing to some NNAF members. After all, marketing is all in how one presents herself and her business, regardless of what one actually does.

In fact, Hoffman claims she received so much support that instead of VP, she threw her hat into a run for NNAF president, and to her surprise, she won. Within a few months, Hoffman claims, the NAC joined forces with NNAF to become the National Abortion Federation.

“Women Did Know the Truth”

Merle Hoffman has been criticized for openly admitting the humanity of the preborn child.

In “Intimate Wars,” she described the pro-choice movement of that day as choosing to “depersonalize the fetus,” claiming that women knew exactly what abortion was.

This admission that women were very much aware of what they were doing when paying for their abortion was the impetus for controversy because Hoffman contradicted the unscientific claims of the day that the fetus was a “blob of tissue,” a “parasite,” and not human. As the owner of her own abortion facility, Hoffman knew otherwise, and it conflicted her. However, she still inaccurately stated that the life inside the womb, while human, was merely “potential.”

She wrote:

But women did know the truth, just as I knew it, deep down, when I allowed myself to recognize it…. At times this really would move me profoundly as I sat opposite the women I counseled prior to their abortions, acutely aware of the potential lives growing inside them that would soon cease to exist. I began to think critically, to come to terms with what was going on. Each time I did that I came out of the process more committed than before. I had no conception, either religious or philosophical that “life was sacred.”

If the women going to Hoffman were aware that she does not believe life is sacred — i.e., that human life inherently has value — perhaps they would be less likely to trust her with their own lives.

“Abortion Stops a Beating Heart”

Hoffman has been a controversial figure in the abortion movement for years, as Salon pointed out in 2012:

Interestingly, although the standard pro-choice line is essentially to let the woman define the embryo or fetus for herself, Hoffman has a more controversial stance: “In the beginning they were calling it a baby. We were saying it was only blood and tissue. Let’s agree this is a life form, a potential life; you’re terminating it. You don’t have to argue that abortion stops a beating heart. It does.” She adds, “I can’t say it’s just like an appendectomy. It isn’t. It’s a very powerful and loaded decision.”

Live Action News’  previously documented Merle Hoffman’s honest observations about witnessing her first few abortions:

What I saw a running through those vacuum tubes when I first started my work was only blood and tissue, unformed and messy. It was easy to imagine the fetus as a bunch of cells that one could define as one wished.

But even in the beginning I had an inkling that this mentality was the easy way out, that it didn’t go far enough to do justice to the experience of abortion.

In its 2012 interview with Hoffman, Forbes referred to the abortion clinic operator as a “Millionaire Abortionist” and a “capitalist,” and asked Hoffman why she was receiving criticism from other feminists for making a profit performing abortions:

There are many feminists who feel–and not all, but many—that a real feminist has to be a socialist. I have been accused of “making money off of the movement.”

… I’m not apologetic that I have an entrepreneurial spirit. I have created Choices and have made a profit. …

And people may say “abortion is your business,” but I say no. Women’s lives are my business. If I do well, like any business, it’s because more people want to come to me.

In the video below, Merle Hoffman claims that her power and money are simply the result of the fact that so many “people wanted to use my services, so I see no problem with that at all.” She disagrees with abortionists and facility owners who want to downplay the money that goes hand-in-hand with ending the lives of children: “It’s always this apologetic, ‘I don’t deserve the money,’ ‘I don’t deserve the power.’”

Exactly what does Hoffman do with all that money and power?

According to “Intimate Wars”:

Money has given me the power to support political campaigns and donate to worthy causes. In the nineties I spent half a million dollars every year publishing On the Issues and started a 501(c)3 called the Diana Foundation so that I could donate to feminist groups and individual radicals that had no access to institutional funds. I donated to the campaigns of pro-choice politicians like Schumer and Hevesi, and of course paid for political actions put on by the PCC.

Hoffman claimed that Senator Schumer was a “very strong supporter of mine.”

The Millionaire Has an Abortion:

Merle Hoffman once admitted in a speech before the Abortion Care Network that the act of abortion “is about power” where women were “exercising the right of fetal existence.”

Yet, of her own abortion, Hoffman explained how she referred to her baby as “female” with whom she had a “shared connection.” In a reading from her book, Hoffman admitted that she wrote in her diary, “For one night, I am a mother,” adding that her abortion gave her both “relief and sadness.”

She described to attendees at the Abortion Care Network conference how she felt as she made the decision, recounting holding her stomach and saying, “Sorry little one, it’s just not time.”

Maryland authorities slow to act against “Gosnell-like” abortion doctor

It’s a story similar to one we’ve heard before: an abortionist currently “under review” by the state continues to commit abortions while the medical board and abortion lobby appear undisturbed.

Recall the case of Kermit Gosnell, who ran what has been dubbed an abortion “house of horrors” in Philadelphia for years, while, despite several complaints, authorities turned a blind eye to his actions.

Now, the pro-life group Operation Rescue has reported that Harold O. Alexander, charged by the Maryland Board of Medicine in 2015 for conducting surgical abortions at an unlicensed facility, has been caught allegedly doing it again – and in response, the medical board intends to keep the complaint “on file.”

Unearthed audio has Senator telling abortion owner not to perjure herself regarding accusations of fetal harvesting

A leaked tape recorded by the Center for Medical Progress shows a Michigan abortion owner admitting that she once talked to “researchers” during her quest to find ways to dispose of the bodies of the babies her clinic aborted. Renee Chelian who operates the abortion clinic chain, Northland Family Planning Center, which performs abortions up to 24 weeks has previously denied under oath that her facility is involved in the harvesting of aborted babies.

Renee Chelian (Image link here)

In a secretly recorded speech given by Chelian before a Michigan National Abortion Federation member session Chelian jokes about how difficult it has been to expose of fetal tissue, laughingly suggesting to her audience that the disposal problem belongs to the women who pay her to abort their babies. (note, Chelian’s conversation begins at the end of one video and the beginning of another video.)

(Video 1 begin ) “We were really tempted to give the fetus back,” Chelian is heard saying in the audio.

(Video 2 begin at very beginning) “We can do that. Um, we thought, we’ll give it to everybody in a gift bag – they can take it home, figure out what to do with it. It’s their pregnancy and why is this our problem?”

Below is video of what the abortion owner told the NAF audience next:

At approximately 3:49 into the video above you can hear Chelian say, I talked to the researchers and they said we want your tissue, we don’t want all of your tissue.”

She later states (9:27 ) , “What ever you’re doing now there’s not a research company that will take all of our fetal tissue because they don’t want it all. And…you know this is an issue we are going to have to grapple with.”

Additional comments in the video are transcribed here:

(Begin 2:05)

“So in coalition, we started working with hospitals who didn’t want to be seen with us. We met them in like Denny’s restaurant, there’s not even many of those left…We talked about you know what are you guys going to do. They were terrified of a public relations nightmare. That hospital actually had big freezers with breasts and kneecaps and gallbladders and abortions or miscarriages. Um and they put all their jars together, at some point. and they go to Stericycle unless the hospital happens to have their incinerator which is rarer and rarer. The guy from Stericycle was quick to point that out to me.

“Um…Nobody wants to talk about dead bodies. Um, and nobody but me. I’m just saying. There was a point when Stericycle fired us that I had 5 months worth of fetal tissue in my freezers. We were renting freezers to put them in. It was all I thought about, was fetal tissue. Like, I was so consumed with fetal tissue, I was ready to drive to upper Michigan and have a bonfire. And I was just trying to figure out, you know, how I wouldn’t get stopped. Or, you know, how far into the woods would I have to go to have this fire that nobody was going to see me…I mean it was the worst, I dreamed about how to dispose of fetal tissue. And the garbage disposal was an option…”

“There was a point where I actually hired someone from another clinic to come in and take 20 bottles and put it my garbage disposal. And I had to fess up to my staff that I did the thing I’ve been criticizing what all these other clinics are doing but I didn’t know what else to do. I was so desperate, that the antis found a way to close us.”

Renee Chelian Thumb

However, in recorded testimony provided by pro-life activist Lynn Mills, Chelian once called a Michigan Senator a liar after he insinuated her clinic might be involved in fetal tissue harvesting. Chelian appeared before the State Senate Committee in 2012 to oppose any abortion restrictions in the state. Michigan Senator Rick Jones then grilled the clinic owner over whether there was a lab that would harvest fetal parts at her abortion clinic. He said he was contacted by a witness who told him the abortion clinic had attempted to convince her to give an “anatomical donation.”

Have you ever suggested to patients or anybody in your office, your clinics suggest to patients that they could have a late-term abortion and then make an anatomical donation of part of the aborted baby?” Senator Jones asked Chelian.

Chelian then pauses before she finally responds by saying, “No.”

Senator Jones then reminds Chelian she could perjure herself if she is not being truthful, stating, I’d ask you not to perjure yourself. There are witnesses.”

Chelian continues to deny the charges brought up by Senator Jones several more times.

At the time of her testimony, MLive.com reported the exchange this way:

Jones and Renee Chelian of Northland Family Planning Centers in southeast Michigan got into a testy exchange. Jones asked if the clinic had ever suggested to patients that they could have a “late-term abortion” and then make an “anatomical donation.” Jones asked if the clinic allowed a lab to “harvest parts.” Chelian said “no” in both cases and called Jones a “liar.”

Let’s recap – Chilean says this in CMP’s undercover sting:

I talked to the researchers and they said we want your tissue, we don’t want all of your tissue.”

And denied being involved in fetal research before the Senate panel in 2012.

This would not be the first time an abortion worker has denied that they took part in fetal harvesting in the past,” says Mills.

However, while Chelian has admitted that her clinics have problems disposing of all the “fetal tissue” i.e. remains of human preborn children, and that she has talked to researchers, she has denied that her abortion chain has had any involvement in fetal tissue harvesting. While we have no way to know whether all or some of Chilean’s admissions are true or not, we do know that these undercover videos recorded by the Center for Medical Progress are exposing the attitude and in some cases horrific actions of the abortion industry.

Listen to the Audio from the 2012 exchange between Chelian and Senator Jones and read a portion of their exchange transcribed below:

Chelian: Well, first of all, I find you rather insulting.
Jones: Isn’t it true that you have a private lab to show up at your clinic to harvest parts?
Chelian: No! And sir, you are a liar!
Jones: No, I’m simply relating what witnesses have brought in.
Chelian: Well, you know, that is part of the problem with this bill is once again.
You have never taken the time to find out the facts because you are 100% wrong. I hope you are embarrassed and you’ll take that back to whoever gave you that information.
Jones: Well, I understand that you do routine gynecological tests for people 39 years old and younger but if they’re older than that, you won’t provide them; yet you will provide abortions.
Chelian: We provide routine gynecological care for the healthy younger population because we’re not specialists in menopause. And we don’t pretend to be specialists in something we’re not. Many doctors offices are specialists in menopausal care and generally after 39, it’s pre-menopausal and then going into postmenopausal care. That doesn’t have anything to do with the good gynecology care that we offer.
Jones: So you deny having LabCore and other groups come to your clinics to collect parts?
Chelian: We use LabCore when we want and any other lab when we suspect an ectopic pregnancy or a molar pregnancy. I’m not sure since you’re not a medical person that you know what that is and I would be happy to tell you if you would like to know. But those are medical problems that pathologists need to look at abortion tissue for. That is not what you suggested. That is in the continuum of good medical care.
Jones: Well, isn’t it true that they come when the babies are 14 to 24 weeks
Chelian: It is true that they come when we call them.
Jones: On Thursdays and Saturdays.
Chelian: You know, actually we do abortions more days than that. So you don’t have that right, either. They come…
Jones: Just the late-term ones.
Chelian: No, and actually we don’t really suspect an ectopic pregnancy in a late-term abortion. You really suspect an ectopic pregnancy when someone is early. Usually under 8 or 9 weeks and the patient, you, the patient, the amount of tissue that you obtain may be inconsistent with what you believe is the correct number of weeks and then we do a tissue float. Then we send it out to a lab and depending on what we find from the tissue float and beta which also goes out to a lab, you know it’s a blood test to measure hcg level. We can advise the patient to seek immediate care in a hospital. Or with her private doctor for the possible ectopic pregnancy or the discovery of a molar pregnancy, which is a pre-cancerous condition in which she needs to be followed up
with a doctor for about a year. Those are reasons that we use pathology labs – not as you …
Jones: Thank you for your testimony, Renee. I spoke yesterday with a witness who…
Chelian: Well, did you speak ? Did you call me…
Jones: spoke with your clinic and your clinic suggested that …
Chelian: Did you call me? Did you call..
Jones: a late term abortion they should make a …
Chelian: Sir, I suggest
Jones: an anatomical donation.
Chelian: You’re lying. Because…
Jones: No, I’m not. I spoke with …
Chelian: Well then your witness is lying. And if you would have picked up the phone and called me or the person who runs any one of my offices, and actually asked a question, honestly, instead of relying on some right to life flunky, with an agenda, who would lie to you because actually you should feel quite foolish right now. That is a lie. You were given false information and you’re accusing me of something, of doing something, based on your inability to get accurate information. I’m insulted
Jones: Renee, thank you for your testimony.

Chelian is a former head of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers. She was once called to task after her NCAP group’s executive director admitted that he intentionally misled the media about the numbers of partial birth abortions performed on healthy women. Ron Fitzsimmons, a spokesperson for NCAPS later said that he “lied through my teeth” when he stated that the late term abortion procedure was rarely performed only on women whose lives were in danger or in the case of the health of the preborn child. “It made me physically ill,” Fitzsimmons said.

‘The abortion-rights folks know it, the anti-abortion folks know it, and so, probably, does everyone else,” he said in an article in the Medical News, an American Medical Association publication.

$44K in bowling funds for abortion clinic where patient was removed wrapped like a mummy

An abortion clinic where a women was removed by ambulance wrapped like a mummy has bragged they raised $44,000 in a bowl-a-thon to continue their horrific business.

Preterm abortion clinic in Cleveland, Ohio posted this to their Facebook page today, “This morning, our hearts are full… While the final tally is still being counted, we know that our bowl-a-thon raised over $44,000 for abortion access! Thanks to all who bowled, donated, and supported us in this event!”

They were congratulated on Twitter by a second abortion rights group, the Abortion care Network.

No mention was made of the woman injured just days before nor the death of Lakisha Wilson a year ago:

The event was part of a national effort to raise funds to kill preborn children in the womb nation wide.

Perhaps they use will all that money for the women they injure during abortions!

But, I doubt that !!!

Just days ago, Operation Rescue reported that for the second time since the death of Lakisha Wilson last year, abortionist Lisa Perriera has sent yet another patient to the emergency room.

    Lisa Perriera OR

An ambulance arrived at Preterm abortion clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, shortly before 2:20 pm on Friday, April 24, 2015. At 2:30 p.m., pro-life activist Fred Sokol filmed a woman on a gurney, “wrapped like a mummy,” in his words. She was completely covered in pink and purple blankets as she was wheeled out of Preterm and loaded into an awaiting ambulance.

911 Preterm abortion wrapped like mymmy gurney-with-woman

There appeared to be no visible IV bag or any other sign of ongoing medical treatment.

The ambulance then sat parked in front of Preterm for an additional 15 minutes before leaving for a hospital presumed to be Case Medical Center, where Perriera holds admitting privileges. Her current condition — or even if she survived — remains unknown.

Pastor Dale Henkel, who is a regular on the sidewalks outside Preterm praying and offering help to abortion-bound women, confirmed to Operation Rescue that Perriera was the abortionist on duty at the abortion facility on the day of the incident.

According to Operation Rescue, Perriera was responsible for the botched second trimester abortion that killed Lakisha Wilson on March 21, 2014, but was never held accountable by the Ohio Department of Health or the Medical Board, despite evidence that laws were violated. Calls for a criminal investigation have also fallen on deaf ears.

Carafem is a a franchise of clinics belonging to the 501c3 non-profit FemHealth USA.

We utilize research and technology to provide abortion services that offer greater convenience, enhanced medical professionalism, and personalized comfort,” they state online.

FemHealth’s board members include the following:

Dr. Sara Newmann : ObGyn and assistant clinical professor at UCSF Medical Center
Phil Harvey : Founder of DKT International and Population Services International
Christopher Purdy : President of FemHealth USA
Melissa Grant : Vice President of Health Services of FemHealth USA
    Julie Stewart: Founder of FAMM
Nicole Gray: US Country Director at Marie Stopes International

But, behind all the hype, what they really are is an abortion clinic located just outside of the District in Montgomery County, Maryland, where they “specialize in first trimester abortions (up to 10 weeks) with the abortion pill” for $400.00 a pop.

Chris Purdy, the president & CEO of Carafem, told The Huffington Post that he came up with the idea for the clinic around 18 months ago where he worked with Melissa S. Grant, a former Planned Parenthood director who is now Carafem’s vice president of health services to provide early-term abortion and make the experience less clinical.

According to their financial statement, Carafem received a substantial portion of its revenue from DKT International whose president Christopher Purdy is FemHealth USA Inc.’s Executive Director and chairman of its Board of Directors.

To draw in more clients, the abortion clinic has produced some new abortion ads:

Emergency at California abortion clinic

Today, the pro-life group Life Dynamics is reporting that pro-lifers outside a Bakersfield, California abortion clinic yesterday documented a patient being loaded into an ambulance.

From the report:

    10612803_10202575829555948_1886727488476217363_n

Family Planning Associates is a chain of abortion clinics in California and the Bakersfield location commits abortions up to 13 weeks.

According to pro-life activist, Terri Palmquist, who regularly side walk counsels outside the abortion clinic, ambulances have been called to the clinic in the past.

As the emergency unfolded yesterday, pro-lifers documented abortion clinic employees raising sheets to hide what was happening as the ambulance loaded the patient.

Terri said they also documented abortion clinic employees clapping as the ambulance pulled away.

Moments after the ambulance left with the injured patient, a women approached Terri and told her that her daughter almost died when she aborted her baby at the clinic.

Deaths from legal abortion are not uncommon as Life Dynamics documents on the website SafeandLegal.com.

Pro-lifers say they are unsure who the abortionist on duty was at Family Planning Associates that day.

According to Terri, abortion doctors Vernon Wagner and Kenneth Wright usually perform abortions there, but she suspects they may be close to retiring as she has seen a new female abortionist there of late.

END LIFE DYNAMICS’ REPORT!
