Planned Parenthood nurse suspended for drug abuse (2013)
In June of 2012, a certified nurse midwife who was employed at a New Jersey Planned Parenthood was terminated after she ordered medications for herself under the names of other Planned Parenthood personnel.
According to a case against Planned Parenthood of Mercer (PPM) employee PHYLLIS S. BROWN, C.N.M., on file with the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners, the medication orders in question included, but were not limited to prescriptions for Tramadol. Trazodone and Fioricet.
Brown, who appeared before the Midwifery Board on December 17, 2012, admitted she repeatedly called in prescriptions to two pharmacies and that she falsely claimed to be J.W. when she called the prescriptions into each pharmacy.
Brown testified that her conduct began in or around December 2011, continued until it was discovered by PPM in June 2012.
Brown had a prior substance abuse history and completed five years of monitoring by the state and was discharged in 2008.
Brown testified she maintained sobriety for three years and relapsed in late 2011, involving both alcohol and pain killers drugs which she obtained by falsely identifying herself.
On January 25, 2013, the Board suspended Brown’s license to practice midwifery suspended for three years.
