Where is the proof that “every dollar spent on family planning saves taxpayers money?”

Are the sellers of abortion and “family planning” using similar tactics to convince the American public that both are needed?

When abortion was legalized one strategy implemented by advocates of abortion was to inflate the numbers of women killed from illegal abortion. One of the founders of the National Association for the Repeal of the Abortion Laws in the U.S. in 1968 was Bernard Nathanson and he explains their tactics, “We announced to the media that we had taken polls and that 60% of Americans were in favor of permissive abortion. This is the tactic of the self-fulfilling lie. Few people care to be in the minority.

“We aroused enough sympathy to sell our program of permissive abortion by fabricating the number of illegal abortions done annually in the U.S. The actual figure was approaching 100,000 but the figure we gave to the media repeatedly was 1,000,000. Repeating the big lie often enough convinces the public. The number of women dying from illegal abortions was around 200-250 annually. The figure constantly fed to the media was 10,000. These false figures took root in the consciousness of Americans convincing many that we needed to crack the abortion law.”

Today, the push for “family planning” is being pushed as a way to save federal money! But, I wonder- just where these figures originate and if they are accurate. Looks to me that all the “studies” published on this topic come from Planned Parenthood’s research arm, The Guttmacher Institute!

In June of 1965, Democratic President Lyndon Johnson stated that every five dollars the government spent on population control was worth more than a hundred dollars invested in economic growth.

Then, at the urging of Republican Congressman, George Bush, Johnson became the first U.S. president to endorse federal funding for birth control.

In 1966, he would also accept Planned Parenthood’s highest award for his policies pushing family planning on foreign countries.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD:

In 2005, Planned Parenthood claimed that Family Planning saved taxpayers $3.00 for every dollar spent.

By 2014- that cost savings rose to $6.00…allegedly!!

In a just released video from Planned Parenthood, president Cecile Richards makes the same claim, “for every dollar spent on family planning taxpayers save nearly six dollars in public money.”

Conflicting Figures?

A separate 2014 release from Planned Parenthood notes the savings to be $3.00 not $6.00 as PP’s prez just stated.

According to Planned Parenthood, “Title X family planning programs have been key in helping millions of American women prevent unintended pregnancies and obtain reproductive health care for more than 30 years. Research has found that each public dollar spent to provide family planning services saves an estimated $3.00 that would otherwise be spent in Medicaid costs for pregnancy-related care and medical care for newborns.

In 2009, Guttmacher reported that, “Every dollar invested in helping women avoid pregnancies they did not want to have saves $4.02 in Medicaid expenditures that otherwise would have been needed for pregnancy-related care.” ~ ( SOURCE: Next Steps for America’s Family Planning Program, published by Planned Parenthood’s research arm the Guttmacher Institute, 2009 (read here)

Again, Guttmacher claims, “$4 Saved for Every $1 Invested; Expanding Medicaid Services to More Low-Income Women Would More Than Pay for Itself.”

Guttmacher

In 2006 this was their claim, “EACH $1 INVESTED IN TITLE X FAMILY PLANNING PROGRAM SAVES $3.80.”

But by 2014, Guttmacher was saying this, “Every public dollar invested in helping women avoid pregnancies they did not want to have saves $5.68 in Medicaid expenditures that otherwise would have gone to pregnancy-related care.”

According to HHS, “In 2008, every every public dollar spent on contraceptive services yielded an estimated $3.74 in savings that would have been spent on Medicaid costs related to pregnancy care and delivery and to infants in their first year of life.”

But HHS goes on to add that, “Significantly, this figure does not include savings realized from the prevention and treatment of STIs and avoiding and detecting reproductive cancers. These calculations also do not measure the broader health, social or economic benefits of enabling women to time or prepare for their pregnancies.

The HHS Source for this is again – GUTTMACHER !!! – iv Frost, J, Henshaw, SK, Sonfield, A, “Contraceptive Needs and Services: National and State Data, 2008 Update,” Guttmacher Institute, May 2010. A 2012 study by Adam Thomas of the Brookings Institute, “Policy Solutions for Preventing Unplanned Pregnancy,” found that every dollar spent on Medicaid family planning services saved $5.60 in publicly subsidized medical care for pregnant women and a variety of means-tested benefits.

In 1981– the savings was allegedly $2.00….

The Population Council reports that, “On average, each dollar invested in family planning saves nearly two dollars in expenses related to antenatal, maternal, and newborn health care.”

The largest abortion lobby group in the US, NARAL says, “In fact, every dollar spent on family planning saves an estimated $3.75.”

Another NARAL report says, “For every dollar spent on family planning services for low-income women, states avoid spending three dollars for pregnancy-related and newborn care.”

RH Reality Blog reports that, “Multiple studies show that every dollar spent on family planning saves roughly four dollars in costs incurred without it.” Of course, they quote Guttmacher as the source of these alleged studies!

Even the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association gets their family planning “savings” info from Guttmacher studies.

Pelosi vid ABC

Even Speaker of the House (at the time) Nancy Pelosi repeated this in an interview with ABC where she said, “The family planning services reduce cost…contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.”

This “every dollar spent on family planning saves” mantra is everywhere. But – where are the independent studies to prove this?

Can you imagine the media allowing research whose claims financially benefit pro-life groups to be sourced? No way- they would require independent studies on this…..but when The Guttmacher Institute a research arm for Planned Parenthood makes a claim – the media repeats it over and over again!

I am not disputing or supporting this claim- I am merely asking – where the unbiased research and documentation is and why it is being repeated by in the media without that?
