Planned Parenthood nurses clinic was a NIGHTMARE – State more than a dozen “unsafe and unsanitary” practices
According to Delaware Online: Two former nurses at Planned Parenthood of Delaware told a packed Senate hearing room today the Wilmington clinic performed “meat-market style assembly line” abortions, focused most on profit margins, and put patients at risk for infection and other serious medical problems by neglecting proper standards of care.
Both nurses resigned their positions last year, and have urged state officials to address problems they say have been ignored or denied for months.
“It was an absolute nightmare,” said Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich, who resigned after only a few weeks on the job and pushed for state investigations for months.
Mitchell-Werbrich and her former supervisor, Joyce Vaskonis, both told lawmakers they were not opposed to abortion. They were opposed to unsafe medical practices.
“This is not about abortion,” Mitchell-Werbrich said. “This is about patients. Their lives are at risk.”
Sen. Greg Lavelle, R-Sharpley, said he was “shocked” to learn of “horrible patient care,” lack of response to the nurses’ concerns, and the state response to their complaints.
Sen. Robert Venables, who called the ad hoc hearing with Lavelle, said he hoped to resurrect legislation that would regulate the clinics more closely.
Just hours before the hearing, the Delaware Division of Public Health released results of its survey of Planned Parenthood’s Wilmington clinic on Shipley Street. The state cites more than a dozen “unsafe and unsanitary” practices and conditions there.
The review, triggered by emergencies experienced by women having abortions at the facility, found 14 kinds of violations at the clinic – including inadequate documentation of narcotics, supplies that had exceeded expiration dates, lax practices to ensure sterility, unlabeled bottles of fluid, overdue or uncertain maintenance records.
