An Albuquerque woman alleges in a lawsuit that she required emergency surgery for a perforated bowel three days after she received a tubal ligation at a Planned Parenthood of New Mexico clinic. ( READ LAWSUIT HERE)

Planned Parenthood and two physicians named in the lawsuit deny responsibility for the alleged injury.

Anathea Griego also contends she became pregnant seven months after receiving the tubal ligation, which is intended to make a woman sterile. She is expecting in January, the suit said.

The lawsuit identifies as defendants Dr. Richard Adams and Dr. Shauna Jamison, who are both state-licensed physicians specializing in obstetrics and gynecology.

The suit also names Planned Parenthood of New Mexico Action Fund Inc., a nonprofit that operates Planned Parenthood clinics.

The lawsuit, filed Sept. 7 in Bernalillo County District Court, seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

Griego contends the physicians perforated her bowel when she received the tubal ligation on Aug. 29, 2011. She sought treatment for abdominal pain on Sept. 1, 2011, at the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she received emergency surgery.

In a response filed in November in District Court, Planned Parenthood and the physicians said they provided Griego with proper care and did not cause her alleged injuries.

Planned Parenthood, in an email this week, said federal law bars the clinic from commenting about patients. “That said, we stand by the physicians on our medical staff,” it said.

Planned Parenthood is regulated like any other medical clinic in the state, the statement said.

“We have a long and distinguished record of providing care to women and men in New Mexico, and are committed to providing quality care to all our patients,” it said.
