Two abortion doctors charged with murder, anoth…, posted with vodpod

BALTIMORE — Two doctors who Maryland authorities say botched a teenager’s abortion last year in Elkton, Md., have been indicted on murder charges and are awaiting extradition from New Jersey and Utah, where they were arrested this week.

Steven Chase Brigham, 55, of Voorhees, N.J., and Nicola Irene Riley, 46, of Salt Lake City, Utah, had been ordered to stop practicing medicine by the Maryland Board of Physicians in September 2010, a month after officials said an operation at the Elkton clinic went awry.

In that case, which police said forms the basis for most of the criminal charges filed this week, an 18-year-old woman from New Jersey suffered a ruptured uterus and other internal injuries during a procedure at the American Woman’s Services clinic on East High Street in Elkton.

The physicians board found that the woman, who was 21 weeks pregnant, had initially been treated in Voorhees, N.J., where her cervix was dilated. The woman was then told to travel, in her own car, to Elkton so doctors could complete the procedure.

After the woman suffered a ruptured uterus, state officials said Riley put the patient in Brigham’s rented Chevrolet Malibu and drove her Union Hospital in Elkton. The board said she sat in slumped in a wheelchair, nearly unconscious, outside the emergency room, while Riley argued with hospital staff, demanding their identities before treating the woman.

The woman was flown that day to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for more treatment. State officials said Riley then returned to his clinic in Elkton to perform another abortion. The injured woman survived.

Maryland’s abortion law, which is less restrictive than in nearby states, may explain why the procedure was initiated elsewhere and completed in Elkton. In other states, later abortions must be performed at a surgical center or hospital rather than at a doctor’s office. In New Jersey, pregnancies after 14 weeks cannot be ended at doctors’ offices.

After this case, the state Health Department proposed regulations to increase oversight of surgical abortion clinics.

Elkton police said they searched the clinic on East High Street but could not located medical records for the woman. But police said they found 35 later-term fetuses, some 20 to 35 weeks old, in a freezer. The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that Brigham’s four New Jersey clinics cannot perform abortions after the first trimester — 14 weeks of pregnancy — because they did not meet safety standards.

Another doctor at the clinic, George Shepard Jr., 88, also had his Maryland license suspended by the Board of Physicians, but he has not been charged with a crime. ( And here NJ Case here) State authorities said Brigham ran a string of clinics in several states, including Pennsylvania and New York. His Maryland clinics were located in Elkton, Baltimore, College Park, Frederick and Cheverly.

Both doctors who have been charged have previously lost their licenses to practice medicine or run clinics in several states, including New York and Pennsylvania.

Brigham faces five counts of first-degree murder, five counts of second-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder. Riley faces one count each of first- and second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Details behind each of the murder counts was not given by Elkton police, who issued a news release on the charges but cited only the case of the 18-year-old woman who was injured. It was not immediately clear if the other murder counts related to the other fetuses that police said were found in the clinic’s freezer.

Two abortionists arrested and charged with murder in Pennsylvania

Two doctors are facing murder charges in connection with a botched August 2010 abortion procedure at a secret Elkton facility.

Dr. Steven Chase Brigham, 55, of Voorhees, N.J. was arrested in Camden, N.J. by homicide detectives there on Wednesday night. He remained in the Camden County Jail on Thursday awaiting an extradition hearing.

Dr. Nicola Irene Riley, 46, of Salt Lake City, Utah was arrested by the Unified Police Department in Utah on Wednesday night. She, too, awaited an extradition hearing on Thursday at the Salt Lake City Jail.

Brigham is facing five counts of first-degree murder, five counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree conspiracy to murder, according to the Circuit Court Indictment Warrant.

Riley, meanwhile, is facing one count each of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and conspiracy to murder.

The charges stem from fetuses found by the Elkton Police Department following a search and seizure of the clandestine High Street location.

According to Operation Rescue: Brigham operated a secret late-term abortion clinic in Elkton, Maryland, even though he had no license to practice in that state. He hired Riley to do late-term abortions there and at his abortion clinic in Baltimore. Brigham would start the late-term abortions at his office in New Jersey, then caravan the laboring women to Elkton where the abortions would be completed. The clandestine abortion scheme was discovered after a woman suffered a life-threatening botched abortion in August, 2010. When police raided the Elkton abortion clinic, they discovered the remains of 35 aborted baby, one of which was 33 weeks gestation. (Read more about this.)

Operation Rescue immediately organized grassroots efforts calling for charges against Brigham and Riley and worked behind the scenes to ensure that the case moved forward. Operation Rescue dug deeper and discovered that Riley had lied about her criminal background to gain licensure in three states. At the time of their arrests, Brigham and Riley were banned from doing abortions in any state.

“We have worked for over a year to make sure Brigham and Riley were brought to justice. We kept the story in the public eye, and followed up with police and prosecutors. This is a victory for the pro-life movement,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

The program interviewed North Carolina citizen Charles Holt, who was forcibly sterilized. Holt recounted how he woke up and knew that something was wrong. He also regrets not being able to start a family.

CNN pointed out that North Carolina is currently the only state that forcibly sterilized citizens that is looking at some sort of compensation to the victims of the practice. The state has already issued an apology, as have seven other states, but critics of the horrific program say that an apology is not enough.

The show interviewed Charmaine Fuller Cooper, who has been appointed by the state to look into the background of the program as head of the NC Justice For Sterilization Victims Foundation. Ms. Cooper said that when she first started reading the files associated with the program, she started to cry for several minutes.

“I literally sat at my desk and cried for 15 minutes,” she said.

According to the interview, there were over 7,000 victims of the program and over 2,000 of them are still living. Ms. Cooper lamented that there is a possibility that they may never be compensated due to the tight budgetary situation in North Carolina.

Transhumanism Turns People Into Slaves to Technology

Transhumanism Turns People Into Slaves to Technology
by Rebecca Taylor | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 12/27/11 2:28 PM

The gaming industry is into transhumanism. The idea of removing a perfectly good limb and replacing it with one that has super human abilities is the stuff of video games, for now.

Deus Ex is a game about transhumanism. Part of the hype for Deus Ex was the creation of a fictitious corporation, Sarif Industries that specializes in human augmentation using artificial body parts. Here is Sarif Industries’ perfect pitch for transhumanism. This is the hard sell for using technology to replace normal body parts augmenting healthy humans beyond normal human abilities:

Sounds fantastic doesn’t it? Transhumanism is super seductive. And yet the reality will be far from what is depicted above. Once people begin to augment, others will feel compelled to do the same, removing perfectly good eyes, ears, limbs and replacing them just to be able to keep up. At this point transhumanism will make man a slave to the technology he creates. In the fictitious Deus Ex world, Purity First, an anti-transhumanism group shows us the reality behind Sarif Industries’ pitch:

The Purity First video is in the extreme, but once we have replaced our working parts with artificial ones it is very possible that companies will have the power to turn them off or control them. Many transhumanists do not consider that artificial limbs will not work as well as promised in the long term and then the enhanced will forever be beholden to the company that made their augmentation. Even artificial intelligence may be used against the user, altering his or her conscious without consent. I envision this transhumanist utopia as man’s ultimate enslavement. The above video depicts just this future.

I want to applaud the behind-the-scenes creators of these make-believe jaunts into the future of human enhancements. They really do understand what is at stake: our humanity. We can use technology to heal and fix what is broken, returning individuals to normal functioning or, we can use it to alter our nature beyond recognition. The former allows us to master technology. Choose the latter and technology will be our master.
