According to the Detroit News: Congressional lawmakers brought a job fair and town hall tour to Detroit on Tuesday, calling for more local hiring and pushing for legislation creating positions nationwide.

“Our people are hurting,” said Rep. Maxine Waters of the Congressional Black Caucus, which led the town hall at the Wayne County Community College District’s downtown campus. “The unemployment rate is unconscionable.”

Close to 100 people filled the town hall meeting Tuesday evening to address concerns about job growth in a state mired in a recession and an unemployment rate of 10.5 percent.

The meeting turned heated at times as some residents debated government spending, bank lending, bipartisan bickering and the disproportionate effects of the economy on minorities.

The caucus estimates the unemployment rate for African-Americans in the U.S. hovers around 16.2 percent.

Residents were “expressing frustration over what’s been happening, and they want something done,” said Clarabelle Harris, a longtime Detroiter, explaining the tone at times of the meeting. “I’m hoping we’ll be able to create jobs and make the city better.”

Other lawmakers attending were Michigan Democratic U.S. Reps. John Conyers and Hansen Clarke; and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II of Missouri, chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus; and Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York.
