Jennifer Swedeoson was caught completely off guard when she flipped through her daughter’s school book, What’s the Big Secret?

Within the pages of her 10-year-old daughter’s sex-ed book were graphic cartoons explaining masturbation, “different types of touching,” and the feelings created by “rubbing our genitals.”

“This is one of the first things that definitely caught my eye, talking about masturbation when you are 10 years old,” Swedeoson told Seattle’s TV affiliate. “What do you need to read that for?”

Swedeoson’s experience is not an isolated incident. Similar cases have made headlines in Tennessee and Montana, as parents learn more about the goal of “comprehensive” sex education.
Mary Anne Mosack with National Abstinence Education Foundation says Planned Parenthood lists the book as a recommended sexuality resource for 2 to 8 year olds. The book also made the “recommended” list of SIECUS, the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States.

“Whenever Planned Parenthood gives an endorsement, I would say ‘parents beware,’ ” Mosack said.

Swedeoson immediately filed a complaint with the Oak Harbor School District. School officials said it was the first complaint it had received in a decade.

“I’m not so upset about the book itself,” Swedeoson said. “I think they should be sending home permission slips, making sure parents are aware that the book is there.”
“This book minimizes the consequences of sexual activity,” said Chad Hills, issues analyst for CitizenLink, “while awakening passion in young children before its time.”
