DURHAM , NC– A middle school band teacher resigned Tuesday after being charged with 64 counts of sex offenses with a student in Forsyth County.
Terry Lamar Jones Jr., 28, had been teaching at Shepard Middle School in Durham since the start of this school year in August.

In a first-person account published two weeks ago in Campus Echo, N.C. Central University’s student newspaper, NCCU junior Jessica Martin revealed an affair with a band director pseudo-named “Smith” during her senior year at Parkland High School in Winston-Salem in 2007 and 2008. Martin described Smith driving her to and from Planned Parenthood for an abortion.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office later charged Jones with the crimes. He is being held in the Forsyth County jail on $500,000 bail.

The sound of the vacuum still rings in my ears almost three years later,” she wrote. “He had taken me to Greensboro because he was scared of someone from school or anyone catching us together at the abortion clinic – didn’t want anyone `getting the wrong idea.’”

The relationship began in October 2007, the student wrote, when Jones invited her to his home to review band videos on the Internet. She said the two kissed that night, but she left in a big hurry to make curfew.

“It was as if he wanted me as bad as I had him that entire year,” the student wrote. “I drove home wide-eyed and full of energy. Who in their right mind would ever believe that I had almost had sex with our band director?”

She said things quickly turned sexual, and the two spent nearly every night together. She said the relationship faltered when she learned that Jones had also been involved with her best friend, but she stayed with him anyway until she graduated in 2008.

“I think I needed the attention,” the student wrote. “Today I don’t speak to either of them. They are still together.”

The student wrote that she still feels guilt about the relationship.

“I am still scarred by the experience. I lost my only friends and abused and embarrassed myself by sleeping with a teacher and having an abortion,” she said. “A lot of girls can talk the talk, but we all have to be aware of that guilty walk that comes along with the territory.”

A former Parkland High School band director accused in a college newspaper piece of having an affair with a former student turned himself in on Monday.

Terry Lamar Jones Jr., turned himself in at the Winston-Salem courthouse around 1:15 p.m. He was accompanied by his attorney, David Freeman, and his family. Freedman said his client received a call on Friday notifying him of the charges.

Jones was placed in the Forsyth County Detention Center under a $500,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 13.

Jones faces 64 felony counts of sexual activity with a female Parkland High student in 2007 and 2008. The female student wrote a piece in a class at North Carolina Central University in Durham alleging an affair with Jones.

The piece was then published in the April edition of NCCU’s newspaper under the headline, “I had an affair with my high school teacher.” The piece alleges the teacher helped her get an abortion when she became pregnant.

Parkland High School’s principal notified the school resource officer of the piece on April 18, and deputies immediately began an investigation, which included an interview with the student, deputies said.

Deputies allege Jones had sex with the student “on numerous occasions” between October 2007 and May 2008. The student graduated from Parkland High in 2008. Jones was hired by Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in August 2006 and resigned in November 2008, said Theo Helm, WSFCS spokesman. No reason for Jones’s resignation was given.

Jones is the current band director of Shepard Middle School in Durham. Officials with Durham Public Schools said Jones is still employed with them, though they are investigating.
